Miraculously miniscule price tag or not, Van Helsing is a damn (and probably damned) solid game.

Lack of community aside, Van Helsing's only real problem is that it doesn't go the extra mile. Nothing is particularly spectacular, but Neocore's latest game is a tight adventure with a few blemishes here and there, and it will keep fans of the genre enthralled for quite a while, especially if they can rustle up some friends to come along for the ride.

This is an action-RPG that offers more than just addictive loot gathering, and that's something we don't see enough of.

Van Helsing isn't a polished game, or even a particularly thoughtful one for most of its campaign, but it has scrappy charm and schlocky character, and it benefits from leaning on one of those design templates that is ultimately really, really difficult to screw up too badly.

If a top down hack ‘n’ slash action RPG is something you’re into and you’ve got a few extra bucks this is definitely you should look into.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing succeeds to create the atmosphere you might expect from a monster hunter game, with tons of enemies to fight, huge maps and plenty of items to find.

There are a few bugs that will get in your way, but when you are enjoying the true experience, it's a very rewarding game. The development team is working hard to get it fixed, so you should consider giving it a try.

There is a lot in this $15 game, and fans of action RPGs should really take a look at it. I highly suggest it.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is a good action-rpg game with a fantastic atmosphere. There are some bugs, but it's a really fun experience at a low price.

For a game that seems to be positioning itself as the anti-Diablo, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing puts in a strong, if kind of rough, performance.

Van Helsing is long and unwieldy, but its schlocky tone prevents it becoming too frustrating of a grind. [Oct 2013, p.65]

There's nothing quite like spending quality hours slaying monsters and collecting loot and fortunately the game doesn't disappoint in either area. The game is an impressive value as the amount of content far outweighs its low asking price. The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is a must-buy for fans of the action role-playing genre.

Neocore Games should be commended for putting out such a high-quality experience where their story is equally outlandish, silly and serious – I’m personally looking forward to the recently announced sequel.

Overall, I had fun with Van Helsing and it provides a lot of gameplay for a title that can be had for under $20. If Diablo style games aren't your thing, you'll want to give it a pass, but otherwise it's worth adding to your game library.

A forgetful story, performance issues, and an unexplained tower defense element hold Van Helsing back from living up to its true potential, and what's left meanders the line between standard and boring.

Beautiful to see, rich in content and graphics options, as well as managed with passion and great attention to detail, the last effort of the Hungarian Neocore Games offers a lot of fun.

Even though there are still some bugs left The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is a really fun experience. The game plays wonderfully and Lady Katarina is an awesome sidekick. This is a great starting point if you want to get your hands on an Action RPG for the first time.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is a nice action-RPG with some new mechanics and a nice, steampunkish setting. Nevertheless, the lack of an interesting story and an almost linear gameplay prevent the game from reaching the same level of Diablo III or Torchlight II.

There are a bunch of features I have not mentioned; teleports, a well thought out maps, network play, and a storyline that has a fair amount of depth - to name just a few - however there are some aspects you just need to play and experience to understand why I have rated this game reasonably highly. Yes, I liked it, and I was a fool to dismiss it so easily. The game is available now on Steam, and at a very reasonable price given its quality. Check it out.

As an action-role-playing game, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing does not disappoint, especially for anyone starved for more of this particular sub-genre.

Risk with the original setting has been worth it. It's a pity there is almost no motivation to replay the game. A result? Diablo for beginners. [Issue#231]

What The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing may lack in replayability it makes up for in competence, enthusiasm and easy charm. The moment to moment slaughter, the deceptively deep levelling and abundance of powerful loot mean it's a difficult game to put down.

Nice at first glance, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing suffers from some really annoying shortcomings that demote it from "nice" to "average".

The Adventures of Van Helsing is an excellent game that deserves to be played by those looking for an extremely well written experience and for fans of old school RPGs everywhere. With a game length that puts many AAA developers to shame, NeoCore Games punched well above their weight and succeeded where so many indie games have failed in the past.

If you can do without endgame item grind, you can get quite a bit out of this dungeon crawler. You’ll encounter dozens of enemies, collect hundreds of items of loot – you’ll even get a very interesting sidekick that is more than just the inventory donkey or fight support and a tower defense variation.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing does in no way tread new ground in the action genre. But it is still atmospheric and sucks you in with it’s combat and loot system. The online mode suffers from many bugs and the adventure does never reach the heights of games like Diablo 3 or Torchlight 2.
  29. Jun 24, 2013
    60
If you’re looking for a multiplayer fix, then look elsewhere, as you will be solely disappointed with the wreckage of online cooperative play – a mode that spoils this otherwise solid video game.

The gameplay is well-executed, albeit it gets increasingly repetitive as you move on with the story (which, as we’ve already said, leaves a lot to be desired).

More than 15 hours long, engaging atmosphere, rich level design, 4-player co-op mode and the Rage system. These are some of the things that make us think that the €10,99 launch price makes The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing one of the best indie experiences available on Steam right now.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing has several highs and lows. Although certainly of a breed with Diablo and others, it offers a genuinely unique experience that isn't entirely meaty, but will keep players entertained for ten hours or so, save the disheartening final bits. I'm glad I played Van Helsing, and I'd recommend it to any fan of the hack-n-slash sub-genre if they've exhausted other entries. Unfortunately, with such polished and well-designed champions in the ring, this quality contender may only be recognized for its hat.

Overall The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is a solid action rpg with a few issues that are too be expected on a first try such as a lack of a replay option, quirky animations and sometimes rough combat.

Not exactly Incredible, but a charming and capable action-RPG at an enticing price.
  37. 70
Van Helsing is a fine example of solid craftsmanship. It may not blow the socks off action-RPG aficionados used to more luxurious offerings, but it’s an iceberg of content and an easy buy if you don’t mind a few rough edges.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is surprisingly entertaining, and it deserves to be played by those looking for a good adventure. It’s visually beautiful and well written. NeoCore Games has been able to create an amazing atmosphere worthy of a monster hunter game. On the other hand, the game doesn’t provide us with anything new or breathtaking, but it does offer waves and waves of enemies, a lot of loot to find and huge maps to explore.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is a surprisingly enchanting ARPG from an incredibly talented team. Neocore has originally implemented all the core hack 'n' slash mechanics typical of the genre combining quality and quantity, form and substance, single and co-op play, at an incredibly advantageous and affordable price.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is everything a legit action RPG should be. No more, no less. If you are sick of all those killings like in the classic Diablo genre, and you desire a bit of creativity, look elsewhere. The rest of you hack-and-slash positive gamers should certainly think about a purchase.

The game really doesn’t do anything new, but the things it does are done extremely well. If you are a fan of Torchlight II and Diablo III, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is the next great game in the same genre of games.
  42. 84
It really gives some recent Action RPG’s like Diablo III a run for their money, at a fraction of the cost. It truly felt like I was playing a full retail title.

Lacks a proper end game, but for the 12 odd hours it will take to finish the campaign is still a great deal of fun. [Aug 2013, p.66]

The Incredible Adventures of van Helsing is a really nice surprise. The game has a unique gothic atmosphere, a well designed character development system, dynamic combat, storyline with decisions to make and some tower defense elements. Unfortunately there are some errors and issues - a silly economy model and weak epic items, for instance. Still - Van Helsing isn't a game visibly worse, than other hack'n'slashes out there. If you like gothic mixed with strange machines, it's worth checking out.

The original setting and folklore-heavy background have a lot of potential, but the game gives up halfway through, content with repeating same-y areas and no longer building on the mechanics. There's nothing very incredible about that.

With Van Helsing's first set of adventures, Neocore Games seems to have hit its stride very quickly. These first steps are a strong start for a series of much promise, and RPGamers should find plenty of reasons to desire to return to Borgova in the near future and create yet more monster giblets.

There is something appealing about The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, despite its rough edges and run-of-the-mill gameplay mechanics. You don’t want to leave this world, but the end titles start crawling mere 15 hours into the campaign.

You’ll find some great ideas here, and players who prefer Diablo 2 to its sequel will certainly love Helsing’s emphasis on character customization. But the story fails to elevate the familiar action to anything special. Mechanically, this is a great action RPG, but it lacks heart.

The game is very well done and interesting to play and with the option of four player co-op, which means four Van Helsings and four Lady Katarinas, I cannot but give the game my highest recommendation for any Action RPG fan looking for a thrilling experience. Get this game, dear reader. You will not be disappointed.

Being a budget indie game, at under half the price of a standard release, we can certainly give The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing far more slack than is possible to give to those cold giants at Blizzard, however that being said it is a shame that Neocore have not used their indie freedom to create a game with a touch more originality.

This game is absolutely golden; despite several poor voice actors (I'm looking at you, Mayor) and awkward typos, the experience is refreshing, unique, and extremely addicting. I've never been more surprised by a game- for $13, I didn't expect an experience rivaling (and surpassing!) top-dollar ARPG's.

Van Helsing is my new hobby, and fixation- I highly advise letting it become yours.

Really enjoyable hack'n'slash with fun world and interesting main characters and their chemistry.
Price is nice, music is acceptable but a
little too short. Graphics are very nice. Skills, attributes and overall character development is great.

Overall, good game for that price.
