Dec 5, 2013As a Fan of the whole game series (played all the games) I have to say that this game was, besides Part II and IV, the best I´ve ever played. Fantastic graphics, a beautiful Setting, a meaningful skill-system, Lara as the inexperienced Explorer and well made cut scenes are just a few positive sites of this game. Only Thing, which is a bit annoying are the Quick Time Events, every time you want to kill an enemy with a melee weapon. But I don´t really care about that. All in one, this game is must-have for all adventurers and fans of the genre.… Expand
Dec 3, 2013this game is great. it has a good story, amazing graphics, a not bad soundtrack and great gameplay. i had fun playing this game but once you finish it, you will never play it again. the multiplayer sucks but this game still manage to be the best tomb raider
Dec 2, 2013Cataclysmically bad game for It's hype and budget. Putting aside the waves and waves of tedious quicktime events scenario throat-shovelling, the entire thing is a gigantic long, linear scripted sequence of laughable cliché moments, be it things that you even remotely touch collapse instantly or how you quick-time event yourself out of wounds like getting a huge, rusty construction reinforrcement pipe shovelled through your pancreas, tugging it out yourself and running at tip-top shape afterwards.
There's also scenes where you'll for example, get an enormous spike shovelled through your throat, traveling up your neck and into & through your brain and still have the character struggle extensively while concious. Yes, I am well aware that there has been rare cases from people not instantly dying from this but those spikes were small. We're talking medieval lancelot penetrations here. AKA something she can't fully get her hands around. (no pun intended.)
I can also bring up the fact that every time you jump from for example, ledge to ledge, Lara will literally float around in the air a bit during the jump in order to align herself to the EXACT, PRECISE and NON-BENDABLE landing spot which gives most of the manouvering a huge glass-house feeling instead of inhabiting elements of open-world sandbox survivalism which is where these genres excel. Then again, the only focus here from Square Enix's part is to tug at the player's heart strings by putting Lara through an ordeal which is the same marketing tactic used by Telltale Games and for that, I can only shake my head in shame.… Expand
Dec 1, 2013Violence and gore pays off. Crystal Dynamics seem to have learned that because Tomb Raider used to be a game that could be played by everyone, especially children. With the insane amount of blood, point blank execution finishers and explicit depictions of Lara's body parts being pierced and cut off by various environmental hazards this game is the first Tomb Raider that clearly deserves a "Mature" (18+) ESRB rating. Even with the acknowledgment that the game's sole purpose is to explain Lara's transformation from an innocent, young and inexperienced girl to someone who could actually pull a trigger on another human being there is no justification for turning her into a blood-thirsty killing machine. So, what should we expect in the game's sequel? Tactical nuclear strikes and kill streaks?
That being said Tomb Raider is a rather enjoyable game. The environments are simply amazing especially on higher graphics settings which have a tendency of making the player stop for a moment and simply enjoy the view. Its clearly visible that game designers spent a lot of time polishing small details which add up to the immersion factor. The audio component is sadly a mixed bag. While some of the voice actors did a really god job the extremely forced accent of Lara Croft (played by Camilla Luddington) is simply annoying. Compared to Judith Gibbins and Keeley Hawes, which voice-acted Croft before, Luddington simply sounds forced and unnatural. The soundtrack also leaves much to desire because compared to, lets say, masterpieces from the "Underworld" OST like "Thor's Room" or themes played during Thailand levels the new Tomb Raider soundtrack sounds simply bland and uninspiring clearly trying only to promote the new main theme. Controls feel okay but there are times when they are clearly too vivid and unpredictable resulting in a lot of unintentional deaths. Combined with the fact that Lara now does a lot of things by herself like crouching (there is no dedicated control for crouch) and reducing her speed when traversing stuff like narrow passages and tombs (there is no dedicated control for sprint)... Well it can be pretty annoying to say the least.
Now we come to the most problematic stuff about the game cinematics and QTE (quick time events). This game is choke full of both! There can hardly pass more than a minute or two in the game without being forced to watch a cinematic or bash the controls like crazy to finish a QTE. At one time I even managed to count FOUR successive cinematics which followed each other! QTEs are a tale for themselves. It really boggles my mind how could anyone ever come to the conclusion that they would be a good way of immersing players into the gameplay. Having a ton of split-second QTEs is probably not a problem on consoles where every button has a specific color so its easier to follow them but when you get less than a second to read stuff like "Press RMOUSE LMOUSE repeatedly" on a PC then that's a real problem.
There is also something to be said about the very anti-climatic ending but venturing onto that ground would probably mean divulging a lot of spoilers so I'll just leave it be. Tomb Raider is a very good game which could have been a lot better if some of the mainstream gaming elements were left out. I just hope that for the inevitable sequel developers decide to tone down those elements and simply get more in touch with the spirit of the previous games by expanding on adventure and exploring. From me personally Tomb Raider gets an 8/10 with a note of letting a lot of things simply slide.… Expand
Nov 27, 2013Was truly amazing, the only thing I drop a point for is the combat was to frequent, involved more people than one would expect for a ship wreck island, and didn't fit inline with the character development points.
Otherwise as a story run game, it was epic.
Nov 22, 2013The game is very well made. It has good graphics (10 out of 10), it has solid action gameplay (8 out 10). The RPG element is a bit too linear, but it's not an RPG game, but an action game. The combat is a bit too easy even on the hardest difficulty, but moderately realistic. The story and NPCs are a bit boring, I would give it a 7 for the story. Also I don't get this new trend of "find 100 secret things for XP and achievements". It's not just this game but many others. Seriously, why can't a game be just about the main gameplay and not about stupid secret-room searching? Why do we get distracted by "visit this secret tomb to make a very easy task and get a tonn of XP" from the combat that is actually quite fun despite it's simplicity? I have no answer to that.… Expand
Nov 20, 2013I’m truly blown away by how good this game actually is! Astonishing visuals, smooth movement, no bugs, great combat and great realism! Many seem to have given up on the Tomb Raider franchise, but for me this has been my best gaming experience in quite some time! Personally, I've always loved Tomb Raider games (and always will) but this was such a fresh experience I couldn't comprehend somemeone not enjoying this title; unless you whole heartedly dislike action adventure games! For fans of the original series (despite peoples pessimism) all of what you loved from prior games is back and no this is not an “Uncharted” rip-off it’s Tomb Raider doing what Tomb Raider has always done; just in a fresh new way!… Expand
Nov 16, 2013Great game! But the game still feels less involving compared to The Last Of Us. Why? Even with better graphics and framerates, TR's adventure is all about being exploring & fighting all alone. Thus, only Lara's character is properly developed, but not any other supporting characters. TLOU is way more magical as it gets you fully immersed in the relationship between Ellie & Joel. Lara is just Lara. I think we need Lara to start having a serious relationship with someone else, explore caves together & go into battle together. Its more fun with "friends", even if they're AI bots. Other than this lonely feel to this game, the rest of the game is simply brilliant! Loved the highs & lows of the game. Decent length & a good story (unlike the ultra-short piece of crap called BF4). I'm glad the puzzles have been toned down, to keep the story moving. Those who like puzzles can always explore the optional caves. I prefer the main quests to enjoy the story on 1st playthrough. Well, looking forward to Tomb Raider 2!… Expand
Nov 11, 2013This is not 'child at play' where a cute girl jumps some ledges.Violence and doll face damsels don't go together always, but TR is something different.Yes, you have to climb rocks and break boxes, but why not, when you can finish off your enemy with the same tool.
Nov 9, 2013There is pretty much nothing bad to say about this game except for the terrible multiplayer, which shouldn't even have been added. I grabbed this game on a steam sale not expecting much and boy was I surprised. What a fantastic and thrilling ride. I can't help but compare this to Uncharted, which is quite ironic, since Uncharted was inspired by the original Tomb Raider in the first place. It's the same action packed cinematic adventure, but Tomb Raider is a much darker game which feels quite believable (well, except for the hordes of enemies Lara slays). As you follow Lara on her journey to save her friends, you feel her pain. When she falls, she falls hard, when she's injured, you feel the misery she is experiencing. Watching Lara go through all that hardship is terrible, but in a good way, and that's a HUGE thumbs up to the developers for that. I don't think I've ever played a game where I've been that connected to the character and felt his every move.… Expand
Nov 9, 2013the reinvention of Lara Croft could have easily gone completely wrong. Square Enix obviously realized how crucial it was to get this right. I feel they captured the essence of Lara Croft perfectly. I really enjoyed this triple A title as it kept me on the edge of my seat with it's over the top action scenes which in all honesty is quite reminiscent of the Uncharted Series. If you have the option to check this game out I would highly recommend it.… Expand
Nov 8, 2013The Tomb Raider seriously needed a reboot, and Crystal Dynamics did an awesome job. However, to cater to the new "impatient" and "less hardcore" generation of gamers that prefer "hand-holding" game play, the devs have killed most of Tomb Raider series' essence.
First the Good parts-
Presentation is flawless, fans will love how Lara looks. Her pain, emotional trauma, the panic and fear she feels, is very believable. Never been so connected to a game character before. Lara is extremely vulnerable but she becomes deadlier as the game progresses. Good job.
The combat is nice, on par with current gen the minor RPG element is present in a very acceptable level. And best of all, NO Leap-of-Faith moments like previous Tomb raider games. Camera work is excellent, which most 3rd person games still fail at accomplishing properly.
Like i said before, the Tomb Raider element seems missing. This game borrows more from Uncharted series than it does from its predecessors. The puzzles are brain-dead easy, and every secret thing is shown and indicated with obvious symbols like chalk signs. Its like a huge Neon light showing you the way.
The movement and jumping mechanics are plain bad. This is 2013, where if a character can maneuver mid air like Metroid & Contra of NES era, its plain unacceptable. Sure its not as simplified as Assassins Creed series, but stuffs like stuck in a uneven cliff/terrain and off animations simply doesn't cut it.
Tomb raiding is added through off mission tomb raiding spots which are clear afterthought, placed there just for namesake. Game should have been renamed "Lara Craft origins" or something, the "Tomb Raider" element is almost nonexistent
An awesome game for
1) The current gamer generation that likes a game to be a walk in the park
2) Old TR fans who are tired of the age old game play
A bad game for
1) Hardcore Tomb raider fans who love challenge and puzzle+tomb raiding element
2) retards … Expand
Nov 6, 2013Story: 5/10, the story wasn't that good, it was pretty generic and the characters weren't that interesting, except for Lara herself. I think her transition from innocent girl to cold blooded killer was pretty dull and unrealistic.
Gameplay: 10/10, this saves the whole game for me. The platforming was fast and fluid and the combat really well done and very satisfying
Nov 6, 2013Overall I liked this game. Good story, good graphics, good control. But I kind a disappointed with the Tress-FX feature. As a newbie, in my opinion, "it's just a hair, why on earth so heavy? nVidia PyhsX can do better than that". I hope next time this feature can do better than that.
Nov 4, 2013Fall in love with TombRaider...
Usually do not succeed remakes...not the case for Tombraider who is probably one of the best games ever created. And for that all respect Square Enix&Crystal Dynamics, really.
I remember the first game Tombraider played...back in time, in year 2000...for that time i was fascinating about the game and i group every year playing TR.I can say i fall in love with Lara.I remember first steps, was in the evening of 31 december when i play first time Tombraider...about 2 hours alone and another 4 with a best friend. And so i spent the new year then...don't care about the party, just found it a game call it Tombraider.
Tombraider 2013...what a change, but still, sometimes, i play old tombraider series, for my guilty pleasure.I
I'm not a fan of new games and throw away old series...no way! Contrary, some new games like RE(another child-start game) are not my style...and maybe for this i think TR is the best remake of a game ever.Undoubtedly.
This game explain HOW LARA BECOME A TOMB RAIDER! And is very great accomplished. From beginning was only a explorer, a simple and naive-scary girl but when circumstances demanded, became an adventurer and...with apologies, a killer-girl of criminals. But only because it was forced...
The new TR is just what a game need to be.Amazing graphics, sound, story, puzzles and challenges. The words are little and poor in this case, you need to see, to play TR to feel. This is not a technical review well, dx11 look amazing this is a heart-touching review of TR.
And about a compared with...another ordinary game, NO! Would be a blasphemy...remember TR was the first game with this gameplay and all the games who next about TR was inspired by the game TR.
In the final...play new TR...feel all whole evolution-storygame of Lara in a evolution game changed from a good and great game into a ambitious, provocative and sensational game...
Welcome back Lara Croft!
Old and new generations of gamers need it!

Oct 27, 2013Easily the best Tomb Raider game. There are a mountain of positives and a mole hill of negatives. I've been a long term fan of this series and one of those people that bought the original of PS1. At the time, that was a benchmark game in every aspect. Fast forward to this, the 2013 edition, I honestly feel this surpases the original in every area. The graphics have to be highlighted as a point of reference. Seriously, the level of detail is simply stunning and I don't own a better looking game. Set this to Ultra and you'd think you were watching a movie. The soundtrack, gun noises, attention to detail as Lara moves, the story telling, the cast, the dirt on her face, the wind in her hair, etc this list could go on and on. I'm tempted to give this a 10 because it really is that good. As I often say in my reviews, I do not understand other peoples take on games. How can this game (at its absolute worst) be anything less than a 7??? Seriously, those who hate on this game (or games in general) need a mirror. Sadly, the internet is making 'The World' a place for unnecessary venting. My opinion may not be right, but marking Tomb Raider a ZERO is utter BS. Such a shame that there is so much hate in modern day society.… Expand
Oct 26, 2013This game is able to display hair very beautifully with a beautiful women/model. It almost looks like each strand of Lara Croft's hair is moving with the rules of physics. If your down with killing hundreds of men with a compound bow and climbing mountains with your climbing axe, well then this game is for you!
The story is awesome too pretty good length of single player action.
Oct 26, 2013This game was a total surprise for me. Having never really been a huge fan of the Tomb Raider series, I was thinking of skipping this one, but hearing so much positive buzz about this title convinced me to pick it up on Steam, and I am glad that I didn't pass it up. Enjoyable game-play and an interesting story had me hooked from the get go. Reminiscent of the Uncharted series, the new Tomb Raider seems to focus more on action than puzzle elements, with the few included puzzles being rather simple affairs, but it's just so fun to play that these little shortcomings are easy to overlook. Superb graphics combined with a very high level of polish and fun makes this game easy to recommend.… Expand
Oct 17, 2013Good game. Against the backdrop of stagnation in the game industry in recent years, this game is like a breath of fresh air. Old Tomb Raider series I was not interested. But the restart of the series interested. The developers have promised a new format of the game. And I want to say this new format came to my liking. The game is 100% live up to my expectations. Spectacular, tough, exciting. It was very interesting to observe the formation of the new Lara Croft, when a cute girl turns into a killing machine, a skull smashes opponents with an ax, bow hunting as Rambo. Unfortunately the plot a little disappointed. Hoping that the storyline will not reach the banal mysticism based on Japanese mythology.… Expand
Oct 11, 2013Definitely one of the best games I've bought this year. This game goes from a bold and engaging story to a sense of adventure, action and emotion that pushes one to want to play some more.
Though I dislike the fact that, on PC, TressFX technology really kills the performance of the game if you're running it on a Nvidia graphic card. Just set the hair quality to normal and i runs smoothly.
Oct 5, 2013There where frusting elements in this game such as the quick time events, the boss fights where disapointing, the "tombs" simplistic and short, but a fantastic reboot for one of my favourite gaming characters.
Crystal Dynamics did a great job on fleshing out Lara as a believable character, the majority of the game mechanics where well designed and fun, the environments looked stunning and worked very well in creating the daunting atmosphere and I loved the sound design and music.
Thanks CD for not stuffing it up and I hope they take on board the many criticisms from the fans without going too far in the opposite direction and lose what made this game so very very good.
Looking forward to the next Lara game.… Expand
Oct 2, 2013I really enjoy this game. The exploration and battle are attractive. Some guys say the QTEs are annoying but that's not true. They are not that many and are easy to pass since you have plenty of time to react. I only find the battle could be more challenging.
Sep 18, 2013Extremely good game. The story, graphics, gameplay, sound, atmosphere, immersion, it's ALL there. There is even innovation not the gameplay type, but still, innovation, which in my ratings is a prerequisite for a full 10/10 score. This innovation is the use of TressFX, which on my SLI GTX 580s worked well.
So basically, yes this game is somewhat like the Uncharted series, and that is a very GOOD thing. It's still Lara Croft, it's still Tomb Raider, and the types of puzzles we use to see in previous TR games are still to be found, except there's a lot more action, more story, more characters, more immersion, more of all that makes a game good.
Wrexmer is complaining about cut scenes and quick time events. I must say, both of these elements were extremely well done in this game, blending in well with the action and context, they are not disruptive at all. I can imagine some people have an absolute dislike for cut scenes and quicktime events, fine, but if that's not your personal case, then I say, you will love the cutscenes and quicktime events. As a matter of fact, in my opinion, this game has THE VERY BEST quicktime event implementation I have ever seen. So there.
There really is nothing negative I could say about this game. It could have been longer, but only because it is so excellent you can never have too much excellent gaming, right? I clock my playthrough on medium difficulty at 14 hours, which is very decent.
Overall, I cannot say enough good things about this game, it is a SPLENDID release, and for once, fully worth the full retail/launch price of $49.99. I almost feel guilty getting it on special for $12.49. Yes, it's that good.… Expand
Sep 17, 2013Wow! Great Fun! I saw reviews from a few whiners:
One fellow was mad because the game was too violent to play with his young children. Sure enough, stick to Nintendo if you want to play games with your kids.
One fellow whined about cut scenes?!? I found the gameplay to cut scene spectacularly entertaining! It was like I was the main character in a pretty sweet action movie (and you should see my boobs). (if you hate cut scenes, press the space bar and fast forward thru it!)
I played TR one on the PS in 1994... but fell out of love with TR for the PS 2 (Lara took like 15 minutes to climb a ladder- even boobs couldn't convince me that it wasn't wasting my time)
Good to see the TR team back on track!!! I may have to start buying older incarnations to see what I've been missing!… Expand
Sep 16, 2013To everyone complaining about the cut scenes, start playing the game and stop complaining.
This game is an artwork and a masterpiece.
I have bought and played over 1000 games easily and I can compare to all the ones played before.
No other game has this kind of story line and game play. The graphics are stunning and the cut scenes bring depth to the story and makes you feel like you are playing a movie and at the same time make you feel like you are part of the story yourself. (you do not like the cut scenes you can skip them for the whiners here below)
Also I could play many hours without getting frustrated about parts which you had to try over and over again like so many other games which are out there. Well balanced and well polished.
Whilst you play you earn different kind weapons which you can upgrade depending the time you spend finding the necessary pieces.
This is finally a game which uses save points as should, you die you do not have to play another 15 min before getting back at the point where you died.
Yes this is a total different kind of Tombraider (which the developers already mentioned so do not complain about this), almost no puzzles to solve like in the previous Tombraiders, but much more story, action and shooting.… Expand

-Little stealth abilities (usually enemies already know you're there)
Buy it, buy it, buy it! Fun, enthralling storyline and gameplay. Worth your money.… Expand
Sep 14, 2013Congratulations.
I have been a fan of the Tomb Raider series since it's inception in the 80s. It was remarkably different from all other games, playable by most generations. The games always required a certain skill/coordination level as well as the ability to fathom out challenges. Locations were varied and caught one's imagination. I have always enjoyed playing them with my children as I knew that their interests/capabilities were being kept in mind. New games were genuinely looked forward to.
Having looked forward for ages to the release of a much loved game, I wanted to express my amazement as to the ease at which you have managed to ruin a whole series of games, on turning something that was enjoyed by many into yet another brainless shoot-em-up aimed at god knows what market which is already saturated by strikingly similar games (the cheap pornographic sound effects of Lara dying are beyond belief). The fact that the graphics are good (though utterly and unnecessarily gross. Once you've seen one severed head/arm/leg/torso.........) does not hide the fact that there are no challenges involved. All this apart from the fact the replacing the usual "mummy threat" has been substituted by having a rather brainless go at the Russians and Japanese does not make for an interesting storyline.
All-in-all, you have done the Tomb Raider merchandise no favours. "Raiders" like my self may have bought this game but I doubt they will buy another. I most certainly will not.… Expand

Sep 13, 2013Amazing game!!! One of the best I've played! It changes a little bit of the essence of Tomb Raider, but still very good!! I like the way things happens, they made a lot of time event, but in my opinion they did it good!
I'm disappointed only with the puzzles mostly are too easy!! The voices are very well played, sound and music very good!
Sep 13, 2013This game is surprisingly good. I haven't played any other games in the series; they never appealed to me, and I wasn't expecting much from this, but I was pleasantly surprised. It is a jack of all trades, and there is a little room for improvement, but it's still a very polished effort. Specifically:-
(1) The story is fairly interesting and immersive, albeit decidedly linear.
(2) The platforming is a lot of fun. It's not perfect, and generally a bit too easy, but still enjoyable.
(3) The combat is very good. I'm not a great fan of third-person shooters, but this is a very polished example and genuinely fun,
(4) Plenty of collectibles/side tasks to keep you busy while you're making your way through the story.
(5) Terrific visuals; looks really nice on max settings.
(6) Stable! I played the patched version through twice to full completion and I never had a single problem. Even TressFX worked fine on my nVidia card.
After first beating it with 100% completion, I found myself immediately replaying it, which says how good it is. In a nutshell, there is very little wrong with it. Sure, a few of the QTEs are annoying, but there really aren't many of them (less than a dozen in the entire game) and they break up the routine a bit.
Overall, it's a surprisingly polished and enjoyable effort. Good job!… Expand
Sep 12, 2013It is so rare that a reboot of ANYTHING is better then the original but it has been proven possible by this game. Now, the tomb raider games were still great before (except Angel of darkness, of course!) but this game is just even better, so much better that I just find it hard to believe. I love the character development in this game, I fell in love with every character and became attached to them. The graphics are truly great and there are some awesome events and set pieces. Game play is great, combining platforming, shooting, stealth and other genres perfectly. There wasn't a moment of this game that I didn't love and it was very hard to put down! If you haven't played this game then stop looking at reviews and go get it! Simply a must have for any gamer.… Expand
Sep 12, 2013Average, in a good way. Similar to Assassin's Creed. About as linear and scripted as it is possible to get, but thats ok. The story is decent, if a bit formulaic and predictable. There is at times too much rambo firefighting and arguably not quite enough tomb raiding. If I wanted firefights, I'd play COD. Fortunately, this port only has mild consolitis, yes there is the usual horrible checkpoint save system, but there is no mouse lag or acceleration. The graphics are clearly optimised for consoles (low res textures, dx9 etc), comparable to Far Cry 2 (from 2008). The quick time events (mash keyboard to survive) are a bit annoying sometimes. Get it in a Steam sale.… Expand
Sep 11, 2013I've finished the game in 14h on Hard difficulty so I can write the final review now. First, the game is beautiful. The story line is also quite decent. Controls on PC are excellent with mouse and keyboard, but you can also play on a gamepad (and it's possible to change it on the fly, the game adapts the controls info in QTEs for that). What's keeping it from being perfect: - overused QTEs in the first hour of the game,
- lack of replay value: story is the main point of this game, once you know it and done all the puzzles it's really no point in playing it again,
- lack of difficulty even on Hard mode, after the first hour you pretty much steamroll everyone as you go,
- they confuse Lara Croft with John Rambo at times, you are supposed to kill dozens of enemies in a single area, wave after wave (and it's hilariously easy even on Hard),
- not enough stealth elements (they seem to prefer the guns blazing approach).
In the end, it's 10-15 hours of a really well done game and by all means worth the 15-20$ price tag on sale these days.… Expand
Sep 10, 2013This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is quite reminiscent of Hitman Absolution. It was gonna be an amazing sequel (or a reboot in this game's case) that would send an already amazing series to further heights.
However, real game fell quite short of the expectations.
Just like Hitman Absolution, the Tomb Raider is rendered beautifully. Many sceneries look as if they came out of a big budgeted movie. I was also quite amazed with the new TressFX that made Lara's hair look like oiled strands from straw brooms.
Unfortunately, similarities with Hitman Absolution do not end there.
Hitman Absolution was criticized by long time fans due to the game playing more like Splinter Cell than a Hitman game. Tomb Raider has an endless supply of QTEs and some of these can be downright frustrating. Also, the numerous cut-scenes take control away from players. These cut-scenes are so many that after a while, you begin to see Tomb Raider more as an interactive story rather than a game.
Tomb Raider does have few puzzles but other than one puzzle involving wind, nothing was all that memorable or satisfying to solve.
Characters, other than Lara, are very shallow and very unmemorable. There's no bond between those side characters and the player. So when a certain character sacrifices himself for Lara and Lara gets upset, player feels nothing for that character and wonders just who the h*ll he was.
This game could've been great and on par with Uncharted series. However, it seems the dev were more focused on aspects of the game that would invite hype rather than constructing a solid game. This was supposed to be a reboot that allowed veterans and new players to connect with Lara on an emotional level but this was made difficult by too many cut-scenes, lack of narrative and straying away from what made original series quite special.… Expand
Sep 9, 2013I was slowly becoming disenchanted of the whole Tomb Raider scene. Probably because I felt she was really a man hating feminist. Its still there but far more toned down. However, I'm glad I brought this. A lot of care obviously went into producing this title, and Miss Croft looks stunning, and even shows a vulnerable side. She also accumulates physical scarring. I liked the QTE in this game. They provide the opportunity for some visually impressive action. Something that's hard to achieve in normal control mode. The only thing I missed was the LC signature tune which should have made an appearance at least occasionally. Highly enjoyable and my personal Game of the year 2013. Well done Square Enix & Crystal Dynamics. Other games I recommend are The Witcher 1 & 2.… Expand
Sep 5, 2013The female Indiana Jones/ Nathan Drake is back with a reboot that looked like a more mature turning point for the character. I personally have only had the chance to immerse myself into only one of these boob fests and that is Tomb Raider: Underworld. While a good time it never managed to shine bright on my gaming shelf. And this new one is something I wanna talk about now.
One of the things to take note off is the brutal violence. And this is where it got messy. This game could have pulled it off if the script could mix in with this aspect. I thought it was cool to see this tipe of violence and darkness to the game but it mixed like oil and water with the actual script! They confused me by telling a mild adventure story with some mild characters and then throwing an F-bomb or some grotesque violent image to my face. It was incoherent and weird. Imagine watching a classic fun Indie movie and then seeing him say this ****ing and impaling someone. That was a major turn off for me since at first I didn´t understand what was off about it.
Another thing is the survival aspect that was portrayed at us in an awesome intense way in a poster where they show Lara tying a peace of cloth to her wounded bloody arm. And it actually delivered at some points where you saw Lara all messed up and hurt in the rain fighting a pack of wolves or surprisingly by just sitting at a sad campsite in the woods! But at the same time it got tuned down when Lara just jumped of a building at fell through an entire mountain just to shrugg it off afterwards. That was a coherence aspect of the game too.
A thing that really made this game shine was it´s enviroment and graphics. The snow and rain where sharp and you could almost feel the wind in Laras skin while it blew her off a bridge (****ing Himiko).
The gameplay was fluid too, Lara moved realisticly and there wasn´t something more badass than using the bow. Besides what I said about Lara weirdly taking massive destruction falls of death, those setpieces where pretty amazin (plane crash FTW).
So... was this game the reboot everyobody has been waiting to play? Maybe, for some but the definite most awesome one they could make, no. Script and game incoherences made it confusing and sometimes awkward. So if you want to play a game focused on telling a full adventure story go play whatever Uncharted game for the fifth time.
I´m giving Tomb Raider a 7 outta 10.… Expand
Sep 5, 2013The graphics, environments, and weather effects are beautiful. Everything about this game is high quality and consisting of high production values. Its only flaws are the excessive amounts of quick time events and the overusage of cutscenes to tell a surprisingly good story. There are also many extras to collect.
Aug 28, 2013everything is failed only except the graphics,
i can't able to find the lara craft which i saw on previous games
the story is not good at all and puzzles are nothing compared to previous one(underworld)
i'm really missing those great environment, musics, characters.
and at last i'd still love to play underworld again but not this one
Aug 28, 2013This game is stunning. During playing through this game I had almost a constant adrenaline kick from falling, sliding down, jumping etc. You have to think quick to grab on to that cliff to avoid falling etc.. so in addition to some very nice fighting scenes (favorite weapon bow) you get some scenes where you have to think how to move on.. small puzzles like how to break a wall or get out of a seemingly locked room.. the graphics and sound are very nice and there are some very nice cut scenes too.. Lara is also neet Try it out.. its a nice experience … Expand
Aug 26, 2013What impressed me most was the story, so well written. Seeing Lara grow from a scared and fragile little girl into an angry, ruthless hunter-killer is amazing. Also the way she recovers from every beating, every fall, every shot and broken bone.
I was amazed by the graphics. I really thought that graphics this gorgeous would require more processing power, yet the game is surprisingly light.
The only reason I'm not giving this one a ten is because of the irritating amount of scenes where you have partial control of the character, and have to push Lara foward Jurassic Park style. Such parts should be cutscenes, not playable scenes. That was a slight insult to the player's intelligence and do more to annoy than to advance the story.… Expand
Aug 26, 2013Graphics are great... the rest is the pinnacle of consolitis. The game play is ordinary and linear, and quick time events are everywhere, not even one is acceptable. why they feel they need to put rpg elements in all these games is beyond me, it feels fake and draws me away from immersion. The perfectly placed zip lines feel stupid, and why can i only climb in certain areas? hunting is pointless and must have been an after thought. what is with games and collecting things? if i felt like collecting random i would clean my house. does any idiot actually collect hundreds of these pointless items? are we rats? i might go and play dues ex again. not human revolution, that was consolized crap also.… Expand
Aug 26, 2013I really liked it.
The game manages to deeply feel with Lara, who in this game isn't the tough women yet, but a quite unexperienced and weak girl, who must adapt quickly to the quite deadly environment.
Nice graphics, very good sound, nice action parts.
What I don't like is the savegame mechanics. In every region you have 2-3 camps where the game can be saved. So it may happen that you have to replay parts of the game, e.g. tough battles.
This didn't happen to me a lot, so it's not a big deal.… Expand
Aug 25, 2013This is what I expect today's AAA titles to be like. Beautiful graphics, nice game-engine cut-scenes, decent story (although quite foreseeable) and a fair distribution of checkpoints. Also, the "new" Lara Croft is much more believable and likable that the "old" one.
Aug 24, 2013Agree strongly with the negative reviews. This game is a MESS of QTEs, narrow, linear levels and mediocre writing pretending to tell a deep story. The whole thing has a lot of potential, and it may get good towards the end. Who knows? I got sick of the quick-time crap pretty fast and went on to play Farcry 3, which was about 1000X better.
THE GROT REVIEW CRITERIA: After a long time writing reviews like an anus, think its time to set a few bad habits straight: Stop insulting designers. Aug 23, 2013Great game. The first thing that comes in my mind in reviewing this game is that the reboot is not a combat game and it is still great. The story line is amazing and you never feel the urge to skip cut-scenes as you are too connected to the game. The only con to this game is the MP, which isn't bad. But also nothing special, also it doesn't fit TR in my opinion.
Aug 20, 2013This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tomb Raider is amazing. It has a great storyline, amazing gameplay and breathtaking graphics, even on the low setting. The puzzles and platforming are enjoyable, and the combat is fun as well. The multiplayer is fun, although I think they could have done something else, like co-op or climbing races, rather than doing regular multiplayer like everyone else. Also, I love Lara's accent and how she says 'bastard'. Surprisingly, going back looking for collectables was actually very enjoyable, although after about 30 hours of the campaign I've still only found 83% of the collectables... Hunting is fun as well, although I believe it should have been more imperative. You only have to do it once. I didn't really enjoy the previous Tomb Raider games, but this one is amazing. I love the characters as well; Father Mathias and the Solarii are pretty awesome. Himiko the Sun Queen and Yamatai is an actual myth, not just fiction. In conclusion, Tomb Raider is an amazing game and if you haven't bought it yet, you need to buy it now!… Expand
Aug 20, 2013Superb re-con!
Very slick and playable with awesome gfx. Storyline is tight and the entire game is cinematic.
Only things I could level against it are the poor multiplayer (why did they waste time developing it? It's like a poor CoD which isn't even a good mp game anymore?!) and how it doesn't seem to cover much new ground with gaming innovation. Some of the QTE are a bit silly too I guess...… Expand
Aug 17, 2013Great Game! Great story! Endearing characters! The graphics on the PC are simply spectacular, and well constructed maps that make sense to be played. Another interesting point is the immersion afforded because he saw me trying to understand why each element of the scenario being there. Really the series gets a new life with this reboot!
Aug 17, 2013Way too many QTEs, No real game play mechanic and not in anyway affiliated with the original games makes Tomb raider just an generic cover shooter. The game tries to make it open world but fails at it horribly. The story is a linear piece of crap which throws a cut scene at you every 5 mins. And its not about puzzle solving or anything.
Aug 15, 2013Really great reconstruction of the Tomb Raider genre, with gripping game play and a good quality storyline. The world is beautiful and open for limited exploration, the controls are intuitive. I experienced several moments of intense vertigo during the game and a couple of surprise moments.
The different area stages of the game provide reasonable scope for completing a variety of side quests which aren't too imaginative, they aren't the boggling puzzles or acrobatic mazes of early Tomb Raider. My main criticism would be the slight repetition of the side quests and a short length of the game overall. Saying this, it may have grown tedious if it went on much further, or the visual quality of the game (which is top notch) may have suffered in exchange for more content.
Not a huge amount of replay value, the multiplayer I found a bit dull and doesn't really work very well, certainly not the strong point of the game. Non the less a decent game for the initial play through.… Expand
Aug 11, 2013Love the Tomb Raider series, this game almost delivers the full experience. My only problem with it was that it was short, I enjoyed finding all the hidden objects and the stories, However the PUZZLES were too EASY. Story was good, graphics were great game play delivered. Puzzles failed. Definitely worth a play through though.
Aug 11, 2013Great PC port and great game. It's basically a reboot and even being a fan of the series, thought this was much, much better than it's predecessors. This is quite a feat to achieve in itself and it's very rare that games actually do this but they do sometimes.
The trailers and early gameplay is shameful. It appears as though this is a linear game and very heavy on QTE's.
While this is true for the first part of the game (~1 hour) this is done to great effect and since this is a reboot, allows for the development of the character. You truly see Lara shine even her voice actor's better than the last.
Now I don't generally like reboots but I can see taking the franchise in a different direction was actually the best idea anyone could roll with. This is a more dark (not "dark knight" dark but more serious in tone and for the first time A TOMB RAIDER GAME WITH BLOOD AND BRUTAL DEATH SCENES).
It's more of an RPG and campfires help to serve as Hubs which you can explore and look for caves or "tombs", upgrade your character with a similar system of killing animals for XP (like Far Cry 3) and travel to other parts of the world. The game's huge and the campaign is ~20 hours, and then you can free roam. The only DLC I'd recommend is getting a few of the SINGLEPLAYER skins, MP map pack(s) and the tomb dlc. The others can be either earned in the game (skills) or are not that great.
The game's music is surprisingly good and easily beats the last. There's a lot of drama and it's quite gripping. The graphics are sensational and it's ported by Nixxes (the same guys that did Hitman: Absolution and made the Deus Ex: Human Revolution ports). Extensive graphics options, lots of tweaking and PC friendly controls. Although there are button prompts, this game immerses you so well there's nothing to really flaw.
Well actually, there is. The voice actors while Lara and her enemies are great, the rest of her crew isn't quite "there" yet. They don't sound mediocre but they don't sound great either. They've got some accents and for the most part they're fine. You still care about them but all the same when you hear Lara's voice you're like... why can't the others have voices on the same level?
There's tons of bonuses and I really liked upgrading my character. Lots of these upgrades were useful and tricks you learned. You really feel like you're playing with an inexperienced Lara. They've changed the story but again, better. She's still English but the Croft Manor and such isn't here. Nor are there vehicles to drive lol. This doesn't matter this game is easily the pinnacle and the top of the Tomb Raider franchise. Fans and non-fans will get appealed, and no fan can deny how great this game is. They don't sexualise her either and the game tends to be mature (most of the time). Still most players will look at her butt most of the time as she's crawling or climbing. Speaking of which all the movements are motion capped (like the last game Underworld) and again helps with the immersion.
In some respects it's similar to Uncharted but it's still distinctly a Tomb Raider game. In some ways, it's better than Uncharted and if you never got to play Uncharted or wanted to (due to not having a PS3 or access) this game will do the job. It's slick, accessible and incredibly fun to play all while holding the Tomb Raider name high and making great efforts to be a cinematic adventure.
The cinematics aren't too long or boring and they're frequent at the beginning, they help to explain a lot as well as build up the rest of the game. Combat's revamped too and while it can be repetitive at the beginning if you don't do main missions and stick to side-quests... the new tricks and vast amount of unlocks, serve to make combat that comes later less harder than it appears to be and far more fun to dish out finishers and sneak around. There's different play styles too and you're rewarded as such. It felt like Batman: Arkham Asylum at times, which is not a bad thing and they integrated cover really well. The focus is on exploring but combat doesn't feel as cheapily tacked on as past games and it's far better for this 3rd person... type of game.… Expand
Aug 8, 2013Huge letdown for me. There is absolutely no psychological exploration of Lara in this game, as was so loudly promised. What you get is a cliché snivelling little girl, constantly wailing while butchering through dozens of mercenaries with absolutely no progression in emotional intensity whatsoever. Lara's is shocked after her first kill and the next moment she just cuts to pieces a hundredd men without regrets (wut?). Some areas are well designed but the whole experience just feels like a long, tedious corridor filled with an unnecessary large number of ennemies (as well as scenaristically unconceivably great). The QTE moments are a pain, you never really know when you are in control of the character or just expected to press a single key. The skills seem to have been implemented at the last minute since they have absolutely no impact on the gameplay. Graphics are strange, oscillating between really really cheap (models of some flags and plants which are just planes with a png botched on it) to sometimes impressive (the interiors are a success) but they never really convey depth. There always seems to be a problem of depth of field, the backgrounds being sometimes a little better than plain pictures on a skybox. The narrative thread is just boring, the decisions of Lara are just pulled out of thin air and I sort of lost interest halfway through the game. All in all, play it if you're an absolute fan of the series but don't expect a huge background and revelations, nor an intense storytelling or interesting gameplay, the artistic direction is kind of nice though and is the only thing worth saving in this game.… Expand
Aug 8, 2013This game shouldn't be put with the other tomb raider games, a series that used to be about well, raiding tombs has turned into a sloppily slapped together mess of cutscenes, quick time events and cover shooting. She gets stabbed through the hip with a rusty pipe,10 minutes and no medical attention later, POOF, healthy again.… Expand
Aug 5, 2013This game is a cookie cutter game of this generation. The game plays itself, has no real challenge, is super linear, and has a pretty dull and predictable story. The characters aren't terribly well done, but could be better. The game play is basically automated with automatic ducking, taking cover, and other movements that are automatic. The combat had no depth and no difficulty as the AI left something to be longed for. The story's so called "rebirth" of Lara Croft also falls short as she becomes a killing machine within the first few minutes of game play.
Overall, it's not a bad few hours but there's nothing special about it either.… Expand
Aug 3, 2013The last time I played Tomb Raider, it was years ago back in elementary when I had my first playstation. At that time, I was still new to the franchise and didn't really care much about the storyline and whatsoever and from the movies, I got my impression that Lara Croft (before exploring) was already an accomplished fighter who is prepared for any danger and that exploring any new tombs are just part of the daily task. But not with this new reboot. It gained my attention as it brought along a new fresh story. Started out with Lara from being just an ordinary girl having to fight her way to become a warrior in order to survive. Not to mention the graphics of the game had already caught my attention in the first place and I was excited when I learned that Square Enix was involved. I know for one thing Square Enix never failed me on graphics aspect and turns out, the games was a masterpiece. I expect a sequel to follow on.… Expand

Aug 2, 2013Very good game, but is easy even in hard mode. If you doesn't care about to complete 100% of the game, you will complete the story in less than 15 hours. Quick time event is a little annoying, but doesn't have so many. The graphics, sound effects and story are very good.
Aug 1, 2013Simply put, this game is a visual masterpiece. It is much more shooter-based than previous Tomb Raider games, and the majority of the tomb raiding puzzles are actually optional. This may irritate some purists, but it's actually a brilliant strategy to open the game to a wider audience. Gamers not interested in puzzle games can still enjoy this title. The replay value is mostly in relic and document collection, which unlocks extra content like behind-the-scenes galleries. The only downside is the abundant use of unforgiving quick-time-events, which will lead players to have to replay certain areas multiple times to overcome. But overall, an excellent game. A must own for anyone bold enough to call themselves a gamer.… Expand
Aug 1, 2013The new Tomb Raider (reboot) is good, and that is quite a surprise. If you get this game not predetermined that it is something that you think it is, rather than accept its choices, then you will have fun.
As almost everyone else has said, this is more of an action 3d platformer game than a puzzle Tomb Raider game. There are a number of optional tombs to raid, which are essentially small puzzle rooms, but the rest of the game is linear and story driven, but it allows you to travel back and forth to areas to do further exploring.
It's mechanics are mostly good, save for the rather many QTE sections which, despite their flaws, make the game more cinematic. I like the fighting and the jumping is well done (unless you want the old masochistic jumping which I was never a fan of) if a bit controlled.
The graphics are amazing, one of the better looking games of this year and it runs surprisingly well on a decent rig. Lasts about 12 or so hours, more if you decide to explore every nook and cranny. All in all, I had fun with this, probably the only TR game I had fun with since TR2 and the isometric Guardian Of Light.… Expand
Jul 29, 2013I loved this game, and that in itself is a rarity. The graphics are gorgeous, I like the interaction and also like how involved you are with Lara and her emotions. I thought the balance between cut scenes and actual game play was perfect. For once the hype was right on spot. Something else that really appealed to me was how it challenged you mentally. I got so involved in it that every time I made Lara jump and grapple I actually leaned forward from the suspense of whether or not I was going to make the jump or not (silly I know but it was subconscious). The controls, menus, and even the object interaction was good as well. The only negative thing for me was the bodies everywhere in some places, it seemed a bit too much and almost gimmicky and I understand what effect they were going for I feel they could of done something else to achieve it. I will state it again, I loved this game, even when I felt frustrated. I recommend it to every one!… Expand
Jul 29, 2013It's a pretty good game, but not without flaws. Many times, it felt like I was watching a movie, just holding forward. It also doesn't bear much resemblance with previous tomb raider games besides maneuverability options, like ledge climbing. I'll let it slide, though, since it's a reboot. It tries to be open world, but personally I don't think it does it that well. If we look at another island survival game, Far Cry 3, it encouraged you to explore by spacing out the main story missions throughout the land. Tomb Raider doesn't do that.
But with the flaws aside, the combat was fun, and I loved climbing my way up or down the rocky island. The story is a great at explaining her origins, but honestly I don't think it explained the bridge between "just an archaeologist in training" to "extreme tomb raider". I've been told that the graphics are average, but I personally think it looks great, especially compared to old tomb raider games. Overall, this isn't a game I'd buy full price. I'd buy it on sale, which it happens much more often than other AAA games.… Expand
Jul 28, 2013I've played many tomb raider games over the years. I've enjoyed the puzzles, and play. I didn't know what to really expect for play other than what I saw from the videos of this Tomb Raider. As I got into playing it, it's THE best tomb raider game to date. Great animations, great camera, music, voice acting and story. They kept in the puzzle solving, moving it nicely into today's environments and play. I STRONGLY suggest if you haven't played this game, do. You won't be disappointed.… Expand
Jul 28, 2013First off this game looks amazing, the graphics are nothing short of amazing. the scenery, artifacts, even Lara's redesign is stunning. Lara now looks less like a Kim Kardashian look alike and more like a normal person you would see on the street. The voice acting if the best I've ever heard! The game is darker and grittier than most games I've played which is right up my alley, with gruesome death scenes that will motivate you to not die! The cinematic scenes in this game are incredible and they do a very good job of keeping your heart racing throughout and even put Michael Bay films to shame! The story is among one of the best I've ever played (up there with half-life!) and does a good job of getting the player attached to the characters. The entire time you will be rooting for Lara to survive and interested in her development from young woman to a hardened survivor. This game exceeded far beyond my expectations. If this is how Tomb Raider games are going to be in the future, I will be buying every single one!… Expand
Jul 27, 2013More a movie with quick time events than an actual playable game. Though nothing like Metal Gear Solid, there's still way too much cinematic. You can tell that's where the effort went, to the expensive of everything else. You spend about 45% watching some cinematic while remaining vigilant in case a random quick time event pops up, about 40% running and jump around small enclosures to find little trinkets and talisman, most of which don't have any purpose, and rest of the15% staring at the scenery. Well, there's some combat too, and it's not bad. I guess Tomb Raider has always been about level exploration than anything else, but if so than there's no justification for how small the levels are. Excellent graphics though. Good voice work, not too many cheesy lines in the dialogue. Overall, not the greatest game, but if you really like cinematic and crazy fast paced explosion then go for it.… Expand
Jul 26, 2013Good combat, exploration, and interactive cutscenes, but could use better weapon management, rpg mechanics, and survival gameplay mechanics.
This game feels like playing a movie, but in a good way. The action is fantastic, the game transitions between gameplay, cutscenes, and interactive events seamlessly, creating an experience that is exciting to watch but still keeps you on your toes. There is not a lot of dialogue, it is mostly action, but the action is done well.
The exploration is so-so. The levels sort of alternate between linear action levels with no need to explore, and slightly more open levels with loot to find. This keeps the game from getting too repetitive, which is nice. Acrobatics are pretty standard and not very challenging.
The weapon upgrade system is not great, but better than nothing I guess. You find Scrap which you use to upgrade your weapons, but it doesn't have a huge impact on how you will be using them. It is also pretty mindless: you just loot all the containers you see then craft what you can at campsites.
The RPG mechanics are an unnecessary add-on. You get XP from killing enemies and finding treasure, and spend the XP on skills, most of which are not game-changing.
This game tries to present itself as survivalism, but that is just a theme. You can hunt, but it only gets you XP. There is no need to look for food, water, etc. The game even has the ususal health regeneration that action games all have these days. The only resources are scrap and ammo.
Story is not bad. I am not a big Tomb Raider fan: they were too silly and sexist for my taste. This one is better, the main character is more human. The change feels a lot like comparing the James Bond movie Casino Royale to most of the earlier ones: this is more gritty, more human, and more interesting.
All in all, fun for a 14 hour playthough, and maybe another in a few months. It was entertaining, as action usually is, but don't expect more than that. I recommend getting it on sale.… Expand
Jul 26, 2013I almost didn't buy this game due to the stark negative reviews. Complaints about QTE were the biggest gripe I read. Personally, I don't like any of the previous Tomb Raider productions. There are some that I even hate. But I have to say I loved playing this game from beginning to end and I'm glad I bought it. I'm recommending it.
The characters were all tolerable if not fantastic. The storyline is mature enough for older adults and it's complex and rich enough to enjoy and get sucked into it. Models were done very well. Lara's new image is excellent and appealing and her character is compelling. QTEs were not at all a problem for me. In fact, I think they did an excellent job with them. That's coming from a PC gamer too. There was nothing exhausting about gameplay really. Even tearing open a crate manages to remain satisfying.
The only negative thing I can point is the 'screen bob' during movement which is slight enough that I can ignore it, but I wonder if it would be a better play without the added effect. I'd like to see more 'bob' in Lara's chest considering she is wearing a camisole shirt. There were also some gameplay elements that seemed like they belonged on an xbox, but they were manageable still.
I played it through the first time on the hardest setting without too much difficulty. I'm giving it a 7 because it wasn't well polished for the PC release and they still have some room to grow this title into something better.… Expand
Jul 25, 2013This game does so many things great, camera is perfectly situated while climbing, QTE are done so great that u wont even notice its a QTE and on top of that u wont be pissed off by them. Only bad points are linearity and its not really an open world game. As a modern reboot of Tomb Raider it is a succes.… Expand
Jul 25, 2013This is the kind of game that I would recommend to all game lovers. I love this game so much! It's well planned. Its full-filling content will leave all players an unforgettable memory. To me this game is unlike many other games; this game is full of surprise and contents for players to discover. Some people may dislike its cut scenes, but i think it's what makes a game awesome. A good story line is what makes a game distinguishable from millions of games release each year.… Expand
Jul 24, 2013Graphically it is very well done and the story-line is quite good. Character development is somewhat juvenile, but not in any meaningful way. The combat mechanics of the game and its controls are fairly easy to learn (Notable exception: QTE's) and they blend with the story-line well enough.
However, all of the positives mentioned above are eliminated by the inept, frustrating, clumsy-beyond-belief and unplayable QTE's (Quick Timer Events). These absurd and enjoyment-ruining inserts bespeak a laziness and lack of confidence on the part of Square Enix/Eidos in their product. I believe they feel the need to "increase the challenge" of the game by inserting this ridiculous and unnecessary interactive cut scene construct into most combat sequences. Accomplished Game developers rely on a working difficulty progression, set by the player at the game's onset. I played this game (first time through) on EASY difficulty and was not able to get by the Wolf Fight in the Wolf Lair.
I play games for enjoyment, first, last and all in between. Square Enix/Eidos has ruined my enjoyment by including this disastrous QTE insert into what could have been a fairly enjoyable game.. I rated the game at 3, in an act of generosity for the inclusion of those aspects mentioned in my opening remarks. Had I rated this game on enjoyment alone, I would have justly given a "0".… Expand
Jul 23, 2013This game is like nothing I've ever played. The cinematography was so great I felt like I was in a movie, yet I never felt like I wasn't in control of the action at all times. The story was compelling, full of action and suspense, contrasted by the perfect amount of stealth and exploration scenes. I suspect that it will have limited replay value, but I don't mind. Having never played a Tomb Raider title before, I know for a fact that this stands on its own, but I strongly suspect it serves its function as a prequel equally well.
I can't possibly imagine why anyone would rate this game poorly. There are a few "Quick Time Events" as others seem to be calling them, but I felt like they were a good contrast to the normal frenzied firefights and exploration while still making me feel in control of what was going on.… Expand
Jul 23, 2013I wanted to give this around an 8.6-8.7 so giving it an 8 instead of a 9 would have been unfair.
I played the first tomb raider game and I enjoyed it a lot as a kid. The puzzles were challenging at the time and the gameplay was fun. Hearing and seeing the T-Rex for the first time was just an awesome feeling.
Going into Tomb Raider 2013 my expectations were kind of high. I've played a lot of games since the first Tomb Raider including sequels that were somewhat underwhelming. I think the team brought Lara Croft into the new age of gaming very nicely. The story was done very well and while it was somewhat predictable, they played the mystical stuff out well like the world wasn't naturally filled with ancient Japanese goddesses. Also, getting to know young Lara and watching her grow into someone more familiar was great.
If you've played any of the Uncharted series then the gameplay might seem pretty derivative but in a good way. It was a pretty familiar formula of some light platforming, shooting, and puzzles thrown in here and there. All were done well enough and have a good amount of polish, however I would have liked to see more tombs and varying levels of difficulty in the puzzles. I know mass market games of today play to the slightly more casual gamer, but in the age of the internet, people that had issues with puzzles could have just looked them up. Also, since the tombs were separate from the story anyways, some really long and challenging tombs would have been awesome. I would have really liked a side story that maybe tied all of the tombs together or just had a tomb that took longer than 5 minutes to get through. Also, quicktime events are starting to get old, especially when they're overused and I think this game was slightly guilty of quicktime overuse. It didnt ruin the game experience by any means but sometimes these events just take you out of the game more than anything.
The game pacing was done really well too. I felt that you unlocked things at a good rate and the story kept moving along well. At one point I thought the game was nearly over only to find out that I was just passed the half way point. At about 9-10 hours the game was still a bit short but if they had tried to make the story longer, I think I would have become uninterested in it. This is where I think the opportunity to make longer and bigger tombs with higher difficulties could have added to the gameplay while not forwarding the story or trying to overextend it. Also, I should point out that I only completed 71% of the game when I beat the story so you could probably get a few more hours at least if you are really looking for everything.
Multiplayer is worth mentioning I guess. It does seem like tacked on and I found it somewhat absurd that there are so many DLC purchases for maps and skins in multiplayer considering how shallow it felt. It wasnt horrible and I did enjoy the time I spent with it, but from what I played, I didnt see anything so new or exciting. If you really enjoyed the game I'm sure you could spend a few hours in multiplayer as well.
Overall I had a lot of fun going back to the franchise after so long and I have to say, Lara is hotter than ever. I'm really excited at the prospects for a sequel to this game but my expectations are going to be much higher. If they released a sequel with another good story, updated and improved upon innovative gameplay, added even hours worth of tombs to raid with more rewarding treasures, and even if they got fresh with multiplayer by adding some coop tombs to raid filled with baddies to fight together as well as puzzles that required teamwork and rewarded you nice treasures, that game would be an easy 10/10.
This game deserves a 8.7 for just the enjoyment level. Its not the deepest gameplay but the story grips you from the start and develops very nicely. Its not without fault and I really expected more tombs with difficult puzzles but in the end I had fun and thats what counts for me.… Expand
Jul 23, 2013I had a really good time with Tomb Raider. This was my first time playing a game in the series, so I'm coming at this mini review from a totally unencumbered perspective.
First and foremost, this is a beautiful game. The art design and visuals are exceptionally well done, as are the animations. Combat is fun, if shallow, and there are plenty of items to search for to keep completionists busy. The plot is swift moving (for the most part), the dialog is well written and the voice acting is great.
My main criticisms come down to the tombs being way too easy and there being a general lack of replay value. The game is relatively linear and plot-driven, so you're going to have a similar experience every time you play. The action set pieces are numerous and super fun, but I can only imagine they wouldn't feel nearly so exciting the second time around. Also, the game is designed so that you will have every single skill and upgrade by the end (as long as you're picking up salvage regularly), so there's no point in focusing on different specializations.
Tomb Raider really falls into the interactive movie camp, and if you look at it that way it really is one of the best the genre has to offer. When held up against other games it definitely has some shortcomings though. I'd recommend picking it up, but maybe only when it goes on sale.… Expand
Jul 22, 2013Reboot of Tomb Raider? More like rebirth! An amazing game for old fans and new. Top notch graphics and feel, interesting storyline and great atmosphere. Everything about this title drips quality. It is plain and simple fun to play. They did so many things right, other developers need to study what was done here.
Jul 21, 2013The game is ambitious, and it creates a genuine good experience. I agree that many will be annoyed by the constant quick time events and yes, it does have the capability of testing the player's patience. I pay it no mind as RE4 has made me cope with quick time events. Game is a bit on the easy side without the ability to ever get lost. The side characters are "ok" but I never grew fond of them. The score I give is the overall first time experience which was very good.… Expand
Jul 21, 2013The campaign was about 9 hours long... and I walked a lot because there were many scary places. I explored as much as possible and it was still only 9 hours long!!! I would play the game again anyway. Many times it felt like a movie. A damn good movie. I haven't seen this much action since I saw one of the Jackie Chan movies.
Wonderful adventure game and little bit supernatural made the island more interesting to explore and fun read its history.
Quick time events: There are A LOT OF quick time events but at least they were not as annoying as in Battlefield 3. If you hate quick time events you shouldn't buy this game. I haven't played games that would have this many quick time events and it took me 30 minutes to get use to it.
Cut scenes: I didn't have problems to tell the difference between cut scene and gameplay. There was only one part where I thought cut scene was still going and fell to my death.
Combat: AI delivers no challenge. It was really easy to headshot everybody. Once AI spots you it will know where you go. Even if you try to sneak away, their guns are always pointed toward corner or cover where you are and they will walk toward you until you shoot one of them or they can see you.
Controls: I have no complains about the controls. Lara takes cover automatically which takes little bit time to get used to but it works well. She always goes where I want and never does something completely opposite.
AI never kills you but failed quick time events will and many times!… Expand
Expand
Jul 21, 2013In short, this game is amazing. In long, this game is amazing. It is a very moving experience with great gameplay, character development, and graphics. There was no aspect of this game that I didn't like.
This reboot of the Tomb Raider series has been hyped for a while and it surpasses every expectation I had. The gameplay is tight, with a deep upgrade system and some worthwhile stealth sections. The story is great and feels like a Tomb Raider game. It is realistic for the most part, while introducing some supernatural elements as the game progresses.
Even though this game is amazing, there is no game without flaws. The only flaw I see in this game is that the characters other than Lara are a little underdeveloped. Even with that, the game is still deserving of a 10/10.… Expand
Jul 20, 2013It isn't perfect, but it hits all the right buttons, reboots the series well and kept me hooked all the way through. A lot of the aspects of the uncharted series that I found tedious, I felt that Tomb Raider dealt with well. At no point did I find exploring or searching for that "piece of treasure" a grind, which is my usual problem with these games; it was dealt with very well. The story was solid, and the cinematics and visuals were wonderful. Take a chance on the game, particularly if you can get it on sale through steam and you'll likely find yourself happily surprised.… Expand
Jul 20, 2013Let me tell you why i am really disappointed by this game: they blew off a FANTASTIC chance to make a great TR comeback. But no, they had to make a game targeted to the average, brainless console player. What we have now, is a really awful level design (corridor, corridor, BANG BANG BANG kill the bad guys, corridor, corridor, cutscene, corridor, corridor, BANG BANG) mixed with an incredible mediocre story and all the worst clichès you could have. This is NOT a tomb raider: exploration is zero (it even tells you "SECRET TOMB NEARBY!!!11one!11" WTF) and you kill a few HUNDREDS of humans, while playing a watered down version of dragon's lair. I have to say though, i am very well impressed with graphics: animations are stunning and the details are really well done. It's sad when the most exciting thing in the game is watching Lara die in the most spectacular ways possibly ever conceived. But that aside, it's a non-immersive, plain and non-memorabile third person shooter. I giving a 6 out of 10 just because i haven't tried the MP yet and i want to believe there is some replay value there.… Expand
Jul 20, 2013What a fantastic game. To start this is one of the best looking games I've seen. The environments are gorgeous, detailed, and visual effects are incredible. From the fog in the forests to burning buildings and the rain and wind effects this game looks perfect. The direction of the game is incredible, with good camera angles, distance, screen shake and all that to really put you in the experience. This game uses a lot of things repeatedly...quick-time events, cut-scenes galore, and Lara gets tossed down a mountain every 5 minutes...it never get boring (except for may some of the collecting challenges), it's always engaging, and often breathtaking to behold. This is a great origin story for Lara Croft and a truly fun game and cinematic experience.… Expand
Mar 30, 2013I really enjoyed this game, they do a good job of getting you emotionally invested in the game early on. The young and attractive LC will constantly leave you wondering if you could be as tough and as she if you were in her place. While others criticize the cut scenes and quick time I enjoyed them, they do not "load a movie" your character interacts in the 'in game' environment in a prescribed way to give the gamer a unique experience. If you are a run and gunner you probably will not enjoy this game as much, don't get me wrong, there is plenty of that, but it is more of a game element (like a character in a haunted house) than a objective (kill as many enemies as we possibly can to win the war). The gameplay is pretty linear, you can fast travel around if you missed something, but you pretty much get the just of where you need to go and what you need to do, not once did I turn the game off in frustration because I needed to step away from a tough puzzle. They were complicated enough that you had to do a little trial and error to get it right, but not too complicated so you can get through them and get back to the awesome story line. The only Con I have is that it could have been a little longer, I completed the game in a little over 12 hours and I was left wanting more, but like all games these days I am sure we will get plenty of expansions.… Collapse
Mar 19, 2013While not every promising idea Tomb Raider has is pulled off successfully, it nevertheless turns in a tense and memorable ride that combines modern game design with its forebears’ adventurous spirit in some exciting ways. Some of its missteps may well come at the cost of your enjoyment, but most can’t hope to hurt the adventure in the long run. Although it never fully finds its identity, this is a game and a story worth seeing through.
