Thankfully, War for Cybertron impresses with an excellent single-player campaign with full co-op support, the included Horde-alike Escalation mode, and surprisingly deep and inventive online multiplayer component.
  2. The well-realized license in this third-person shooter can hide the myriad problems for only so long.
  3. Extensive single-player and co-op options as well as a deep online multiplayer experience means there's a lot of bang for the buck. However, the simple third-person shooter gameplay can get repetitive.
  4. It's the first game I've played that nails the personality of the bots and it genuinely delivers a solid gaming experience alongside the nostalgia.
  5. Transformers: War for Cybertron is an exciting game which allows you to experience the time before the films as one of three Decepticons or Autobots. You take part as an important member of Decepticons or Autobots and have to destroy a lot of Transformers shooting at them or hitting them with your melee weapon.
  6. After years of uninspired movie-licensed games, we finally get to run, fly and drive around with the Transformers and be happy about it. The lacking AI and unvaried fighting sections kill some of the fun, but the game does have a lot of redeeming factors and with a second player you'll feel right at home.
  7. A Third Person Shooter with some gameplay innovations, a great atmosphere and full of action. Slightly simple in design of levels and repetitive mechanics, but fun.
  8. Swift and fluent action illuminates the origins of this saga of popular shape-shifting mechanoids. Long campaign and balanced multiplayer make Transformers worth trying. [Aug 2010]
  9. War for Cybertron is a respectable action game with a generous coating of awesome robots who turn into cars. [Sept 2010, p.92]
  10. Transformers: War for Cybertron was set to be a great game. However, with the massive amounts of dropped matches and game crashes I experienced in multiplayer, it makes it a difficult game to really rely on and return to regularly.
  11. A competent shooter that makes the best of its license. Those early 80s cartoons have been suitably honoured. [Sept 2010, p.100]
  12. Its campaign is only worth seeing through if you're extremely curious to see how it ties into some of the other Transformers lore out there, and the multiplayer is solid, if perhaps a bit uninspired. It's a good diversion that'll keep you engaged for a few days, but don't go in expecting long-term excitement.
  13. Transformers: War for Cybertron focuses on intense shooting action and sets the example for the Transformers-license. The story isn't really interesting, but gives you more fun and variation than you would expect. Add an excellent multiplayer mode tot the whole and you got a game that will drag you through these summer days.
  14. A decent Transformers game, at last. [Oct 2010, p.78]
  15. War for Cybertron is a huge leap forward compared to previous Transformers games.
  16. Transformers : War for Cybertron is not an unforgettable action game, but it manages to stay above average, even more when compared to the previous Transformers games.
  17. The best experience is probably on console. [Oct 2010, p.60]
  18. A little bit more polish could have made this game a blockbuster title.
  19. The sound, except the voices (Peter Cullen is Optimus Prime, who else?), isn't remarkable either, so in the end the question boils down to: is War for Cybertron worth it? The answer is yes, but with some minuses, because there are plenty of problems ruining a nicely done story and the thrilling multiplayer is killed by technical hick-ups that shouldn't have been there in the first place.
  20. This game may tell a pretty banal story, it may tackle you with some moronic puzzles and the decepticon bots may sound as evil as Winnie The Pooh on amphetamines, but the bombastic, continuous action of this third person shooter lets you beg for a break.

If you in any way like Transformers or action shooters then this game is sensational. Yes it is locked at 30 fps but it is both fast paced and smooth. It also feels very much like a console game but that just means you can get into straight away rather than gradually realising how good it is. In feel it is similar to Gears of War although not quite as polished. There is no snap to cover like there is in Gears of War, instead you simply hide behind rubble or bits of debris. On the other hand Marcus Fenix cannot cannot transform into a car nor fly about and I always thought the vehicle levels in Gears were a bit of an afterthought and didn't really add much to the game. Conversely transorming is an integral tactical option when playing War for Cybertron and great fun too. The game itself i reasonably long with 10 levels each taking about an hour. The game is full of nice touches like the affore mentioned tranformations, the voice of Optimus Prime and various references to the 80s cartoons and movie and thankfully it is free of any reference to the live action movies. A special mention for the boss battles which are a lot of fun. They can be agonisingly long but there are much appreciated checkpoints along the way. Overall the game is really good. It does leaving you wanting a bit more, the jet levels in particular are massive fun but there are only two of them. Hopefully it will be a success and they can make another one which addresses this and adds a little more polish. It is by miles the best Transformers game ever made and, credit where it is due, a very good action shooter in its own right. Full Review »

Transformers: Battle for Cybertron is the Star Wars Battlefront 2 for Transformers. I.E. It's not perfect, but it's probably the best they've got. First off if you're looking at this like I was for a multiplayer alternative to Modern Warfare, you might as well give up now. When I logged on at 11am Alaska time- there were 16 people online- total. There are no servers, you browse via XBOX choose a mission and let us place you in a game style. Single player looks good, but the graphics are outdated and you'll be annoyed to know in the campaign I didn't see a way to keep Optimus Primes melee weapon out. Because it does so much more damage, instead he swings it once and spends half a second putting it away- while you're getting shot. For games overall it's not good, for Transformers games- apparently- it's the best. Full Review »
