  • Summary: Players are plunged into a dark and disturbing story to reveal the secrets of an ancient civilization’s relics and exact revenge on the Evil destroying their universe. Ritualistic killings and blood lust blur the line between their own kind and the Evil they seek to annihilate. Their ultimatate goal is to free themselves from this tormenting place and understand the origin and the purpose of this uncanny Evil. An Evil that annihilates all in its path, it has no shape but seems to follow a precise scheme, drowning everything under a black essence; it is impossible to stop or even to slow down. Since its birth, the universe is slowly disappearing. Avoid traps, solve puzzles and devour the faces of their slaves for sustenance. Engrossing cut scenes bring every brutal detail as the gothic sci-fi story unfolds and plunges players into confusion. The chilling music, menacing characters and stylized black and white presentation draw them deeper into this gruesome, episodic 3D adventure game. Easy point-and-click playability. 3D graphics with revolutionary black and white art with dynamic camera angles. Challenging puzzles to solve. Compelling pre-rendered cut scenes with voice acting. Clues in text, picture, and video form. Game saves and multiple player profiles. [Meridian4] Expand

  1. So we have a very atmospheric game with good storyline and puzzles. And it is retailing for only US$10. If you don't mind the dark story elements, then this game deserves a place on your shelf.
  2. If you're into the surreal, love your puzzles or you're simply sick of formulaic puzzle/adventure games, this could just be the perfect tonic for you. [Nov 2007, p.89]
  3. I hate to pound on a game that at least tries to be different, but Vigil needs a bunch more polish and a bunch more content before I’d even consider it to be a full game, let alone something worth buying, and so you should be wary of it, even at the $10 bargain price it has now.
  4. Play this game if you enjoy feeling hopeless and frustrated or are just plain curious as to how a game would specifically seek to bring about such a feeling. Otherwise, you'd be wise not to bother.

Decent adventure game worth the $9.95. It is not of the calibur of the SCUMM based games in the old day though. I am interested to see what Freegamer/Meridian4 offer up in the next episode. Pros: Interesting art style, creepy music/atmosphere. Weird story. Cons: Game screams for some AA and AF settings, higher resolutions, and widescreen support. Also in desperate need of an actual save feature since what it currently offers is horrible. And a few technical issues in the audio area (hiss and popping). Expand

If you like mysteries, then you'll like the story of this game. You pretty much don't know what is going on, but through exploration, movies, and notes, you start to understand the whole culture of your character a bit more. Gameplay, is very simple. If you have a mouse, with two buttons, you have all you need to play this game. One button will make you move where you click, the other will let you open doors, manipulate objects, eat slaves, pray, and anything else that can't be done by walking. Unfortunatly, part of the gameplay has a problem. You can't save whenever you want, you have to wait to finish the act your on, and let the game autosave. And since the stark, black and white palace your in is alot more dangerous than you think, you'll probably be restarting alot. Normally these aren't really problems, except for the fact that you can't skip dialog, and almost every time you come to a door, there's dialog. So after spending 5 minutes to get to the area you died before, and then finding out that you really can't walk there... be prepared for another 5 minute walk. That is my only gripe with Vigil. Other than that, I can't wait to finish it. Expand

The only way this could become an eight or higher if it were in color, and spoke English.
