  • Summary: These are times of fear. These are times of chaos. These are War Times. Follow the tumultuous era of the Second World War through the actions of Germany, Great Britain, the USA or the USSR; each nation is totally different and uses unique strategies in their attack and defense and all the campaigns are based on real historical events, bringing an unparalleled realism to the fight. Use the impenetrable German offensive squads, complete with the most powerful ground units, weapons and artillery. Conquer special missions with the USA's elite soldiers army and advanced vehicles. Stay on the defensive with Great Britain's unparalleled defensive units and radar detection. Or knock em' dead with the Russians unstoppable firepower on land, air or in the sea. 1. As usual, Multiplayer is where it’s at. There’s just too much good stuff balled up into one package here not to have two or more humans at the helm, bashing their heads against one another in an RTS royale cage match.
  2. Most of the time the gameplay never crests much higher than mediocre.
  3. A fun, playable and respectable effort at capturing the feel of World War II combat, but its magnificent cutscenes and (initially) superb soundtrack end up promising an experience that the blocky graphics, uninspired landscapes and poor sound effects can’t make good on.

A pedestrian real-time strategy game that barely manages to offer up the basic mechanics that define the genre. Add its failure to deliver the spirit we'd expect from the setting and there's very little to separate War Times from dozens of other all-too-predictable real-time strategy games.
  5. It's unfortunate that the same level of fun didn't make it into the single-player campaign. [July 2004, p.73]
  6. The enemy AI is just as poor as the pathfinding AI. The enemy will send troops at you singly and in pairs allowing you to make short work of them. Even after you've spent half the mission killing off the enemy's solo suicide attacks it doesn't catch on and continues to waste its troops one by one.
  7. With a poor presentation and poor gameplay, War Times feels like an overpriced piece of budgetware that's destined to languish in bargain bins until its desiccated corpse turns to powder and is blown from our memory. [Aug 2004, p.82]

All i can say is: will there ever be a good, solid, 80+ average, with balanced multiplay, great graphics, sound, gameplay, engine and AI friggin WW2 RTS??? i mean, in the past 4 years there have to have been about 10 to come out, and from what ive heard or played, they basically suck. ya maybe some people liked this one or that one, and i heard combat mission is really good, but thats a war game, isnt it. there are so many amazingly great ww2 shooters and wargames out there, i think its time we need a great RTS. I rather play a round of Wayne's World than getting my hands on this heat shit.
Let's hope we get it out of our minds soon. Peace.

I don't pass a day without thinking and dreaming about this game. It makes me sick every day from new on. I'm like mentally disturbed.
    Let me go...
