Much as was the case with World of Tanks, World of Warships does a lot of things really well. Its gameplay is easy to get into but allows for a fair amount of depth in how you approach each battle
Potentially WoWs has some great gameplay, but problems that were carried over to release version from beta preclude us from giving it a higher score. [Nov 2015, p.58]
A good and tactical free to play game, that intelligently mixes its mechanics in slow paced but tense and fun matches on the sea. It's probably the best of the World of War series from a gameplay standpoint, and the variety of ships changes the approach of the player in impressive ways. Might be a bit low on content compared to Tanks, but it won't be long till more stuff gets added.
It might not have the unbridled thrills of World of Warplanes nor does it possess the immediacy of World of Tanks, but World of Warships manages to fill a special spot for action gamers.
World of Warships starts out well. The game is fast, it looks good, and it’s fun. Progress soon comes to a crawl, however, and the repetitive grinding, off-set only by a convoluted Free-to-Play system, dampens the experience in ways that the superb graphics and quick multiplayer matchmaking do little to offset.
I've been playing World of Warships since it went into open beta in 2015. Prior to this I played World of Tanks so this wasn't my first **** game.
If you've played World of Tanks you'll know how unforgiving that game is. Make one mistake and that's it, game over. World of Warships is slower paced and gives you time to think ahead and be much more deliberate in your gameplay. Mistakes are punished, but generally you don't die from three or four hits as you do in World of Tanks.
The grind is much less painful, and the use of premium camos and signals allows you to move up the tech trees far more quicker than in World of Tanks, but just like that game, at higher tiers the ships and upgrades become very expensive and you'll run short of credits if you're not running a premium account or have some high tier premium ships for grinding credits.
Wargaming apparently learned their lesson with this game and didn't include premium ammunition. In fact, there are no ammunition costs in this game.
The rock-paper-scissors interaction between the ship classes *was* very good. I say was because that was up until the recent aircraft carrier rework. Right now high tier games are blighted by the aircraft carriers which are simply too overpowered and have completely overturned the established game meta. A carrier can spot you seconds after the match starts, this is especially bad for destroyers. If the carrier then decides to focus you there is pretty much nothing you can do about it. There is no effective counter play for a carrier with a hard on for your ship. Anti-aircraft fire was also reworked for the new carriers and has recently been shown to be working very poorly - there are very few ships which can put up an effective defence against air attack. Right now if you get into a match with two tier 10 carriers on the other team (which unfortunately happens far too often) you're going to have a pretty miserable experience whether you're in a battleship, cruiser or destroyer.
I'm also slightly concerned with Wargaming's trademark Russian bias creeping in. Russian battleships have only been in the game for a matter of weeks and they're just about to get a second tier 10 battleship (which no other nation has). Of the two tier 10 battleships they have access to one will be the most tanky and well protected battleship in the game, the other will have the most accurate long range guns and best anti-aircraft guns in the game. World of Tanks is already massively effected by this Russian bias, please don't let it creep into World of Warships!
The in-game chat is also far less toxic than in World of Tanks. You will still find abusive team mates, but it's much less frequent than in World of Tanks.
I'd give the game a solid 8 before the recent carrier rework. I've gone with a seven because there's still time to save it... if the developers double down and keep the totally unbalanced carrier class as it is now I'd give it a 5.
Good game. Its like a shooter, but you will also have to worry about positioning your ship and steering it. Ships are not as easy to control compared to a character in your regular shooter.
Its incredibly grindy, especially if your shooting skills are poor. You will find yourself unable to progress.
The seas and explosions are solid.
Matchmaking is very decent.
I have played WOW for around 2 years and although the game can be fun I think the devs are being far to greedy with the game, and I don't mean the cost of some of the products in the game. What I have found is that unless you are spending a good deal of money in the game you are put at a disadvantage. You get less hits with your shots and the ones that do hit score less points. Also the hits on your own ship are more severe. It seems the more you spend the better your aim gets and people shooting at you aim gets worse. So it seems they are looking after the big spenders by letting them score big and discouraging the free and low spenders by having them score low.
This Game has a high frust factor for multible reasons.
It is a F2P game, but i think it more as a Pay2Progress with some Pay2Win mechanics, just saw i thread on Reddid how one got his first T10 ship after 4(!) years of constantly playing the game. A huge part is locked behind a paywall and gambling (lootboxes) and some advantages are payed by real money. Skins and Flags (not the economic) give you extra stats and player power.
The estetics are awsome, great looking grafic, high amount of details and good sound.
You have 5 classes: Desdroyers (DD), Cruisers (CL/CA), Battleships (BB), submarines(SS) and aircraft carryer (CV).
Now to the frust factors:
1. No respawn + high TTK: Frustrating when you are getting oneshottet.
2. Community is really toxic: especially if you are playing playing as SS or CV, even tho they are not they most anoying thing in the game.
3. The grind: this game is brutaliy grindheavy, especially if you are a F2P player, then you will spend months grinding
4. Pricepolicy: their pricing policy is bold and one of my biggest points. I never saw a game with such absurd high costs.
Monthly 8,20€ to get double XP and credits and you still grind your a** off. Ships can cost between 40€ - 70€ and if you want an even ship now, it will go up to 250€. Flaggs and skins cost (with some eceptions) real money and are gone after one **** one one-shot.
5. Matchmaking: this can between 2 Tiers. Means you can face Ships that are 2 Tiers above yours and thats a huge difference and really frustrating.
6. Meta: Right now, from my experience, the meta looks like only two classes are in only one way playable: Sniper-BBs and ambush-DDs.
Cruisers are just XP Pinatas, destroyers ambushes with a one-shot torp salvo while beeing stealth in front of you. BBs are just slow, chonky snipers in the background and flaming the CV for only existing. SS stay underwater somhere and get flamed for beeing in game and get oneshottet after beeing spottet.
7. Events: most events are very grind heavy and you still have to pay to take part
