A combination of terribly poor A.I. and boring mission design. There are only a few must-have units for each side, and balance between the races is way off.
  2. A thoughtfully designed, complex, and pretty fun game to play. Alas, a dearth of supplemental features and some flimsy presentation drag down what could have been a more solid overall package.
  3. The console controls just don’t work well for this kind of game, and not having the ability to pause during a battle and order set jobs to be done really caused some frustration and just seemed like autopilot fighting until one group was dead.
  4. You'll miss things like camera control, intelligent AI, and set battle formations for your units. Also frustrating is the fact that you don't carry over supplies or accomplishments from mission to mission. [Aug 2003, p.89]

The biggest flaws with AvP: Extinction are the lack of a rotating camera, the unit micromanagement required, and the fact that there are only 21 missions in the game with no multiplayer at all... I wasn't disappointed with the game, and I don't think fans of AvP would be either.
  6. People shouldn't make RTS games for consoles for the same reasons that people shouldn't put square pegs in round holes: they don't fit. And people definitely shouldn't make substandard RTS games for consoles.

By taking two killer licenses and placing them in a real-time strategy setting, Zono Inc. has crafted a compelling, addictive, and challenging-as-hell game.
  8. Thanks to good controls and a truly imaginative take on the AvP universe, Extinction turns out better than expected. You can tell the developers really loved the movies. It's just too bad they didn't take it far enough as a game, serving up a short campaign and failing to offer any extra modes.
  9. This game has the basics down with good gameplay and excellent controls. What it's missing is the icing; the graphics and sound to back up that gameplay.
  10. There's entertainment to be had with Extinction, but expect a lot of hair-pulling to go along with it. [Sept 2003, p.116]
  11. APE is quite tactical, the control is good and it should keep fans interested, even with the fog-of-war, funnel levels, and pathfinding problems - a good RTS entry.
  12. The game mechanics are so badly crippled that it probably doesn't even deserve to be called a strategy game.
  13. Of course, if you put them in a dreary real-time strategy with wide-open environments that drains away all the tension and replace any hostile encounters between the species with tedious combat, then perhaps the game would fall short. But no developers would be daft enough to do that right? Right? Oh dear.
  14. Since Extinction requires so little in the way of actual strategy, it probably deserves the title of "RTS Lite" more than "Army Men RTS" ever did... Don't expect anything too terribly deep and you won't be disappointed. [Sept 2003, p.92]
  15. It's a bit on the ugly side, but its single player missions are solid and the races are vastly different. [Sept 2003, p.38]
  16. For a console RTS, Aliens versus Predator: Extinction isn't half bad but compared to a PC RTS, however, Extinction is too simplistic for it's own good and hardcore RTS fans would do best to avoid it.
  17. Who ever thought Atari Jaguar owners would still be playing the best Alien Vs. Predator videogame ever made EIGHT YEARS after their system's death? A rental for the curious, Extinction is as forgettable an RTS game as they come.

Im a fan of the movies. I like the ambiance of this game. The gameplay is regular. The xenomorphes move greatfully. The graphisms are just nice. You can go and get it if you share an interest around Full Review »

This game is great. I had so much fun playing it. I loved playing as preds the most. I just wish the game allowed me to get more preds, you barely get any in most of the levels. Ofcoarse I had plenty fun playing as aliens too. There are some flaws in it but other than that, this game is worth buying. Full Review »

This is a great game hands-down. Having control of three different races is cool. (PREDS RULE!) Cool new types of aliens and preds and awesome upgrades. Now the bad news. Level design take a hard punch in the stomach. There are too many tall mountains and trick paths. When you tell troops to go past a mountain they break apart.(Which normally gets one group massacred) The last marine level and the last predator level are unrealistically difficult. Some balancing issues.Other then all of that it is a great game. Not worth $50. More like $40. Full Review »
