  1. It would have been nice to have seen some more variety in the environments, and the instances of backtracking through areas you've already visited are disappointing. But the game's exciting, free-form combat makes up for those deficiencies.
  2. Alter Echo is great but has one unforgivable issue: repetitive gameplay.
  3. 80
A unique action game that’s repetitive in its style and level structure, Alter Echo is kept from being boring by its over-exaggerated morphing combo system and a wide variety of enemies that adapt to your attacks.
  4. Game Informer
    80
Almost every texture in the game is soaked in bright neon colors to deliver a stylistic sci-fi setting. Unfortunately, where Alter Echo excels in graphics and gameplay, it comes up short in plot and personality. [Sept 2003, p.107]
  5. Cheat Code Central
    80
A good game but the developers made one serious mistake. By making the game so short and with no multi-player or any serious replay value, Outrage has created the perfect rental.
  6. Play Magazine
    75
While it's not exactly triple-A, Alter Echo is one of the most innovative and all-around interesting action-adventures you're likely to play this year. [Oct 2003, p.73]

Got it for a bargain without expecting much of anything and discovered it was just mediocre. Bad games are one thing--they have the potential to be funny--but mediocre games just have meh structure, meh stories, meh characters, and meh gameplay. But, it is playable, so I'll grant it that. That's not necessarily a bad thing, since the game comes across as harmless, but it's not a compliment either. It has a nice atmosphere, but the story and the gameplay are just kinda weak. If you stumble upon it for less than $10 at the game store then go ahead and pick it up. But it's only worth going out of your way to find it if you're a PS2 game collector. Full Review »

Bits of platforming are mixed in with large dosages of frantic combat, involving the use of 3 very distinct forms that you'll have to master to achieve victory. The game's fun and exciting combat and suprisingly solid story are enough to recommend this game, despite its technical flaws. Full Review »
