  • Summary: Front Mission 4 (FM4) marks the debut of the popular mech-based strategy game series on the PS2. Utilizing the technological capabilities of the system, FM4 brings you the newest chapter in the best-selling series. While boasting an enhanced battle system, outstanding new graphics and dramatic voiceovers, FM4 maintains the strategic gameplay that has won acclaim from both gamers and press worldwide. As in the previous games, players can fully customize their wanzers, or mech units, with a variety of powerful weaponry and parts. In addition, new tactical features such as the "Link System" bring a new dimension of strategy to the game. Set in 2096, FM4 opens as an unidentified group of wanzers assaults and destroys an E.C. German base. The player?s point of view switches between two main characters that find themselves trapped within a dangerous global conspiracy. Elsa, a new recruit in the E.C.'s Durandal corps, is sent to Germany with her team to investigate the attack. The story then shifts to Darril, a U.C.S. Army sergeant in South America. He and his company are sent to Venezuela after its governor declares independence from the U.C.S. Though Darril's squad seems far more interested in slacking off than fighting a war, their plans for early retirement are put on hold after they witness a fateful plane crash in the jungle. I found few things more immensely satisfying about Front Mission 4 than witnessing a perfectly executed chain of attacks occur all from moving one Wanzer into position and issuing an attack order. Thumbs up for an interesting new way to pump a little fresh spice into the standard turn-based strategy formula.
  2. A satisfying and often engaging sequel especially crafted for that seasoned fan who is able to put up with the leaden nature of turn-based strategy. [June 2004, p.60]
  3. It's ridiculously satisfying taking out a bunch of missile-slinging enemy troops with your perfectly geared up wanzer unit - no question. [Sept 2004, p.18]
  4. While the game is difficult during parts, there was many times when enemy AI would do nothing.
  5. Unfortunately, the game loses some of its shine to some tedious pacing, some visual issues, and, in some cases, the weight of its own complexity.
  6. There is much to saviour and overcome for the discerning player, but for others be wary, as this release does not take prisoners.
  7. Not only is the AI predictable, but the storyline is so linear that it's just an excuse to connect one mission to the next.

now if i was gona do my top 3 favorite PS2 games this game would be in it. this was a huge suprise mainly because ive never even heard of the front mission series till i played this game . when i saw it i thought it was just some 3rd person shooting mech game where you just run around and shoot things up and thought ok this might be fun. boy was i wrong and for the better its actaully a Stratagy RPG which by the way i freeking love thoose kinda games and was immidiatly hooked on it . the combat system and level up system are great and i love the whole link system where you can chain your attacks . the story is well told and is decently voiced acted with intresting charicters . its a pretty long game to i think i clocked in almost 50 hours first time through . my only small gripe is i wish you could controll more then just 6 mechs in combat . 10 would have been really nice. you also play 2 differnt sceneroes that will intertwine with each other as the game progresses . so you have 2 main charicters . which felt abit strange at first but i begane to like after some time . all and all a great SRPG . SLOW. I find myself continually skipping the battle scenes, but its not fast enough. Prepare to waste hours on a single battle and then lose. The plot is weak. The voice acting is cheesy. Customizing mechs was alright. This game is not fun. I couldn't even sell this game for 99 cents on ebay. Expand
