Incorporates a moving story with surprisingly addictive gameplay, while adding a dash of comedy to spruce up an otherwise sinister plot. The environments are beautiful and highly detailed.
-
Something that I believe the RPG genre on the PS2 really needs: a hardcore, difficult RPG that appeals to the gamers that grew up playing the classics on the SNES.
-
The Tactical Arts System, along with the introduction of Origins and the inclusion of menial tasks like gardening and cooking provides an inimitable gameplay experience. However, graphical and sound flaws might dissuade newcomers to the genre.
-
79The interesting to watch, yet boring to actually play combat engine, the absolutely horrendous voice acting, and rarely used weapon/armor/item creation system makes this an average title at best.
-
76With its arcade-style power-ups, turned-based combat system and group combat management, this is a game that presents challenge and adventure.
-
75Not great, not bad, not for the casual, Legaia 2 could have been something better.
-
The battles are easily the best part of an otherwise middle-of-the-road RPG. [Oct 2002, p.85]
-
The audio and visuals of the game definitely look like they needed a lot more work before this game was released, but the idea on the new battle system was well done, even though there arent many battles in the game.
-
70It's an inventive take on turn-based combat. [Nov 2002, p.44]
-
70A difficult game that's clearly designed for experienced role-playing gamers, but these are the same sorts of people who might have already lost their patience for this antiquated style of gameplay.
-
The seductive power of its plot is relatively weak and you may find yourself too overwhelmed by the absurdity of the gameplay to even care what develops in the story, but this title does in fact have a plot.
-
Deals out an epic storyline, lots of characters and an innovative combat system, but fails to break any new ground.
-
60Only hardcore fanboys (and girls) of the 32-bit prequel are likely to be impressed-enough with the battle pyrotechnics to overlook the outdated engine and other negative aspects of its game design.
-
The novelty of the battle system wears thin pretty quickly, and befroe you know it, you'll be wishing you could just skip fighting altogether. [Dec 2002, p.204]
-
60Though the story has a great moral, how its shown through gameplay and style doesnt earn this RPG big points.
-
The most obvious letdown: the drab, blocky graphics. It's so dull that it even out-uglies some of the first-generation PS2 crap. [Dec 2002, p.162]
-
60An average role playing game that perhaps tries too hard to hold onto its old school roots.
-
58The plot remains as bland as that of its predecessor, and the characters are equally forgettable.
-
Although this hackneyed plot does have its high points, the game unfolds at a treacherously slow pace.
-
A stilted story of amnesia, magic, and finding the meaning of existence plague the more positive points, the highest being, once again, the entertaining battle system. [Nov 2002, p.96]
-
40The game is so cookie-cutter and average that it becomes an empty vessel.
