  1. One of the best jRPGs out now. It breaks every rule, goes back to the roots of the genre, and incorporates battle and customization systems that far exceed anything else the genre’s thrown to gamers so far.
  2. MS Saga: A New Dawn is a sharp RPG that introduces the Mobile Suit franchise into the genre with style.
  3. As an old school playing, level grinding, strategy-requiring rpg, Gundam True Odyssey may scare off those looking for an easy ride. Make no doubt about it, TO is a very challenging game. [JPN Import]
  4. MS Saga: A New Dawn can be completely compelling once you let it sink its hooks into you, promising at least a good 40 hours of gameplay and some cool replay bonuses.
  5. This is a game that will definitely appeal to those players who are already fans of the source material, or who simply enjoy playing with giant robots, as these players will be more likely to overlook the game's shortcomings and appreciate its potential.

Fan or not, you also won't think this is the typical shoddy Gundam game. [Mar 2006, p.106]

MS Saga: A New Dawn, while graphically sound isn't on par with the likes of Grandia 3, Dragon Quest VIII, or the forthcoming Final Fantasy XII. [Mar 2006, p.43]
  8. This isn't one of those games that'd you'd pawn of for being an entirely wasted effort, but it doesn't really strive to lift itself above mediocrity.

If you like customizing big robots, you're going to be happy with this one. I realize that's a niche, but it's a niche I'm part of.
  10. For those who base their first impressions off a game’s graphics, they may find themselves rather discouraged, but if you can overcome the aesthetic obstacle, you’ll find that the level of depth and customization, the upgrading and the combat system are fully satisfactory for a RPG.
  11. While the game isn’t much more than an average RPG, chances are hardcore Gundam fans will really enjoy it. If you don’t mind the dated graphics and somewhat cliché story, then MS Saga: A New Dawn can be a fun and interesting game.
  12. I’ve always wanted a Gundam RPG. Despite its many issues, I’m glad Bandai finally took the steps necessary to make it happen. It’s a flawed disappointment, but it was worth checking out.

So while nowhere near as sophisticated or well-produced as, say, a “Final Fantasy”, MS Saga does take a good 50-60 hours to churn through, and there’s a decent challenge hiding under its deceptively cutesy surface. [Mar 2006,p.85]
  14. MS Saga looks and feels dated, but it makes good use of the license and manages to deliver a decent--if unremarkable--role-playing experience.
  15. Electronic Gaming Monthly

Bandai gets so much right with this new Gundam role-playing game that the stuff it gets wrong really, really hurts. [Mar 2006, p.106]
  16. 62
The execution just feels radically off, perhaps because of how far away MS Saga went from the source material.
  17. I remain unimpressed by MS Saga: A New Dawn as well as the Gundam series it's based upon. While Bandai has crafted a playable game with some points of enjoyment, the majority of its content is extremely dull and flat.
  18. This is one of Bandai's better Gundam efforts ever, but it still doesn't play like a full-featured, real Japanese RPG. Let's hope for a sequel, I guess.
  19. Can't get enough of those mobile suits? Bandai releases a turn-based RPG with an engaging plot, but let down by run-of-the-mill gameplay.
  20. Official U.S. Playstation Magazine

MS Saga succeeds in creating one of the first truly accessible Gundam experiences while still giving the hardcore fans a reason to play. [Mar 2006, p.87]
  21. 60
MS Saga is like a cake without icing: it qualifies as a simple dessert, but it's just not tasty enough to be memorable.
  22. Its toughness means that for the bad tempered out there, this game is a sure source of busted controllers. And its visual and story blandness might be a turnoff.
  23. If you love your RPGs cliched, tired, and boring, then MS Saga will keep you busy, but personally, I can't stand it.
  24. 50
MS Saga lies just below the threshold of a good game, and the shine of its customization and gripping boss combat is dulled by lackluster, rote storytelling and lifeless presentation.
  25. 40
If you're a dedicated Gundam fan that doesn't mind the rudimentary gameplay elements, you'll probably enjoy yourself. Otherwise, with so many other superior RPGs available for the PS2, it's hard to recommend MS Saga.
  26. 40
Long on promise and short on delivery. Had the developers opted for a real-time combat engine, strategic 3D battlefields, or some other interesting twists, MS Saga could have been worth a look.
  27. 40
A game with no surprises and a superficial combat model, but giant robot fetishists and long-time series fans at least have one less reason to complain.

It was one of the best RPG's I have played since the Final Fantasy games. The sheer amount of mobile suit customization alone makes the game wonderful. Its well worth it to buy, especially since I got mine for only $20. Full Review »
