  2. Negative: 4 out of 20
  1. There's nothing in this game that hasn't been done elsewhere, and better. [Holiday 2002, p.44]
  2. A nice package, though certainly not as good as EA or Sega’s version.
  3. The game generally just tightens up many spots to make it a contender this year. Of course with other offerings out there, 989 still might be your third or fourth.
  4. The game AI may have a few stumbles, and the graphical quality isn’t near the standards set by EASports or Midway, but this is not a bad game.
  5. The problems arise though with the poor AI and gameplay of the game which is plagued by sketchy animations and goalies that just do not seem to want to stop those easy shots.
  6. The graphics are bad, the gameplay is below average and the career mode is weak, add it all up and it makes for a game I can’t really recommend to anyone.
  7. A game that really needs a design overhaul – some might like title, but I certainly wouldn’t want to spend more time with it.
  8. The changes did not go far enough and the result is a game that is still a notch below the top players.
  9. 65
There are far too many gameplay, graphics, and presentation problems. I would say that the game is minor league, but that would be an insult to the guys in the AHL.
  10. Simply way too choppy to enjoy all that much.
  11. 52
The game also plays very jerky, which in the end, is really the most important part.
  12. With too many in game flaws and lack of customization you’ll be lucky if you can get through one season of NHL Faceoff 2003.
  13. Despite a year off last year, Faceoff 2003 hasn't improved enough to stay with the competition.
  14. The graphics of FO 2003 aren't horrible, but they're definitely weak.
  15. It's advisable for both general enthusiasts and die-hard hockey fans to avoid this game for fear of losing interest in the sport.
  16. 989 Sports has a long way to go if they want to compete with the big boys. [Dec 2002, p.91]
  17. 40
Textured well enough, suitably brutal, and sporting fairly evolved team-management options, it's too bad the gameplay experience weakens the overall score.
  18. Stay far away from this rink rat. [Jan 2003, p.134]
  19. Even if I were a hockey fan, the game would still suffer from bad camera angles, jerky animation, magnetic puck-pulling sticks and unrealistic AI performance.
  20. I was fairly impressed by Faceoff’s presentation, player models, and intuitive controls. However the weak animations and sub par franchise mode in the game keep Faceoff from achieving greatness.
