  1. Those who have fond memories of the original Pitfall! will relive some of those memories upon booting up the game. However, the simplicity of the original game is lost later, and it becomes more of a puzzle-solving, rope swing timing game.
  2. It doesn't break any manner of new ground. However, this is not to say the game isn't fun on its own merits, and all told, The Lost Expedition still makes for a pretty enjoyable platforming experience all around.
  3. The Lost Expedition is indeed noteworthy, if for no reason other than the fact that it manages to bite the style off of Metroid rather strongly but still injects enough humor to keep it entertaining.

Full of overt and covert nods to the classic, Pitfall: The Lost Expedition is a worthy, entertaining successor to the proud, creaking lineage.
  5. While juvenile and cartoonish in presentation, the overall presentation is not sure at times whether it wants to take itself seriously or not--leaving most situations and some characters depicted during the adventure as downright silly.
  6. It just feels slightly light, the locations feel slightly claustrophobic and there is an overall feeling of tightness in it. It's a slightly good game!
  7. Looks and sounds the part of a goofy adventure game, and for the 10 or so hours it takes to complete players will be sure to enjoy its charms. It is far from a masterpiece, but it is the current highlight to the series.
  8. It's just that up against the established franchises of the 3D platforming world, and even some of the newer titles, there's really not that much in The Lost Expedition that genuinely stands out or demands attention.

The game's well-polished; it would have been hailed as revolutionary a few years ago, but now it's just another decent, 10-hour-long hop-n-bop to add to the pile.
  10. Simply put, this title's characters, plot, and dialogue are hackneyed and verging on painful. Every joke falls flat, and every plot twist seems scraped from the bottom of Indiana Jones' barrel. [Apr 2004, p.91]

As the platformer has been slowly bent into a sort of adventure game, it's a pleasant shock to be taken back to a time when missing that jump really did mean you had to start again. Collecting things is kept to a minimum and your quest is tightly packed and varied. [Apr 2004, p.109]
  12. PSM Magazine

An average adventure with a good sense of humor. [May 2004, p.29]

All in all, it seems like Activision has missed the boat. Instead of going the "Prince of Persia" route, taking a nostalgic title and darkening the action while beefing up the story, Lost Expedition wallows in mediocrity like a large, pink sow that uses words like mediocrity.
  14. There was the original Pitfall, and now there is the unoriginal Pitfall: The Lost Expedition.
  15. Gamers who have been versed in the worlds of Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, etc. will find the new Pitfall entry with little to offer. It sports solid, loosely Pitfall-inspired gameplay, there is just nothing new about it.
  16. Electronic Gaming Monthly

Gone is the great adventure, lost to the simple need to collect stuff, and in its place is the carrot and the stick - which even the most dedicated mule will only chase so far. [May 2004, p.88]

Pitfall: The Lost Expedition may lack originality, but it's a damn good game with a very decent gameplay, colorful visuals and charismatic characters.
