RTX shocked me with its design, music, and especially story integration which borders on greatness. [Aug 2003, p.77]
The cheesy sci-fi atmosphere won't do much to convince you to play this game, and neither will the derivative gameplay and level design. [July 2003, p.106]
With repetitive gameplay, basic graphics and poor controls, especially in gunfights, RTX is one of those products that sounds good on paper, but weak in execution.
An over-reliance on gadgetry and a cumbersome interface make playing the game more of a chore than anything else. [Sept 2003, p.38]
The game just never firmly establishes a sense of direction. All told, you're basically thrown into a scenario and told to care, with no supporting material to help an intelligent human being establish anything remotely resembling suspension of disbelief.
It is the combat that is the most disappointing aspect, despite the game offering such elements as piloting buggies, donning a space suit before exiting space stations, and using jetpacks.
From generic character designs to an underwhelming audio presentation (in a LucasArts game??!!), and from its close-to-unwatchable frame-rate choppiness to the endlessly boring fetch quests across Mars, RTX Red Rock is a laundry list of what NOT to put out on the crowded 3rd person action/adventure PS2 market these days.
