  1. Dammit, EA, I want my effing SSX game back. This is NOT the direction the series needed to head in, and I'm sure there had to be some dissenting parties in place up in Vancouver. Maybe next time you'll listen to them.

It would have been nice if staying on a slippery metal pole without falling off was rewarded via points like in the Tony Hawk games but I guess you can't have everything. Enjoy the delights of this delicious winter warmer now.
  3. The overhaul of the Uber-Trick system did nothing to enhance the experience, (quite the opposite) the GUI presentation was bad enough to be called insulting, and there is the distinct possibility that this incarnation may alienate past fans of the franchise.

A big step backwards from "SSX 3." [Dec 2005, p.102]
  5. The overall presentation (although a little strange) works well and the animated menus are especially nifty. However, the redesign of the attribute system and the inclusion of the corny ‘Trick Stick’ that takes all the effort out of the Uber tricks mars the good reputation of an otherwise impeccable series of games.
  6. It’s not that SSX On Tour is a bad game. It’s just that the game attempts to improve upon a gameplay formula that doesn’t necessarily need it.

SSX is dead. In spite of the addition of skiiers with snowboarders, there is little else in the way of innovation. The fantastic music of the SSX is dead. In spite of the addition of skiiers with snowboarders, there is little else in the way of innovation. The fantastic music of the previous three games was replaced by flavor-of-the-week emo crap. The aging PS2 hardware is pushed to its limits resulting in framerate hitches and choppy gameplay. And the art direction in this game is quite possibly the WORST of any videogame in history - so bad in fact that it distracts from the game itself. It's not "funky," it's not "fresh," and it's not fun; it's distracting, embarassing, and annoying, and can only be explained as a failed attempt to move away from the more rigid design choices used in the earlier games, which were just fine, frankly. I don't know how much EA paid these critics to laud this game as heavily as they did, but the Tony-Hawk-ized "you can be a rock star!" motif of SSX game is a dealbreaker and the mechanics of the gameplay itself aren't strong enough to overcome its awful aesthetics. SSX On Tour is lame, it's embarassing, and it's annoying. Do yourself a favor and stick with SSX 3. You're giving up the ability to play as a skiier and have occasional "out of bounds" warnings (get over it and learn the terrain!!!) but you're also giving up having to look at cringe-worthy notebook doodles of guitar-playing unicorns and jittery winged dollar-signs. One can easily see that the creators had fun making this. I love the cartoon-ish design and the music. The graphics are great (still) and the game play really fun. This is how a good game should be and is one of the best for PS2. Full Review »
