  1. Of course the idea with Deluxe is that even if that's beyond you so much has been brought together that there's enough to entertain regardless.
  2. One of the biggest draws of Super Monkey Ball is the addictive multi-player games, all of which included here, and are unlocked from the get go.
  3. In many ways this is the ideal stock title that you need for those occasions when people who don't really like games end up in the same room with those who really do. And you're all out of gin.
  4. Where SMBDX earns my recommendation as a must-buy is with its awesome lineup of 12 party games.

The game's graphics are still dated despite the new background changes and themed stages. But it's no biggie -- the monkeys are still sucrosely cute, and the levels are well designed.

The constant loading times in between levels and in the menu screen put a damper on the fun. Other slight visual issues like drops in the frame-rate mean that this isn't the cleanest Monkey Ball to be released, but the game play remains accessible and fun.
  7. It's a fantastic package if you've missed this infectiously charming series up until now, though some of its luster has faded with time.
  8. The game can be maddeningly frustrating, requiring precision and steely nerves, but also hugely addictive.

If your only option is the PS2 version, it's a less attractive option -- but if you're looking for simple, addictive brain teasing, you can't go too far wrong with this.

Unless you love Monkey Ball more than Orangutans love Tang, you can safely pass this one up. But if you haven’t played Monkey Ball before, you can’t go really wrong with Deluxe.

Steer monkeys in Perspex balls around courses in this arcade oddity. [Jan 2007, p.106]

All that remains to be said, perhaps, is remember to take regular breaks and to pray for a next-generation installment that includes online support.

It's a simple premise in that brilliant sort of way, and it's helped along by fantastic level design full of undulating terrain, holes, ramps, bumpers, and who knows what else. [Apr 2005, p.76]
  14. The 12 games vary quite a bit - Monkey Soccer and Monkey Fight are particularly good fun.

A huge and solid compilation of old monkey ball mayhem. The PS2 version looks a little bit dated and dull, yet the simple gameplay shines as brightly as ever. The bonus games are also fun. [July 05]

Some minor tweaks are appreciated, like having all of the minigames unlocked from the beginning, but nothing has been done to alleviate SMB's myriad frustrations. [Apr 2005, p.117]
  17. Pelaaja (Finland)

A fantastic package of painfully difficult single player experiences and exciting multiplayer goodness. [May 2005, p 78]
  18. Whatever problems there are in the one player mode, the party games more than make up for them.
