  1. Unfortunately during this gargantuan effort, someone along the production line forgot to say this: Fackin’ hell, these control’s ain’t ‘alf fackin’ dodgy, guvnor!
  2. Too much of it feels clunky and "bloody amateurish", as a certain character is fond of exclaiming. For what it's worth, however, there's really nothing quite like The Getaway in terms of a truly gripping adult gaming experience.

Forgive its design and technical shortcomings and you'll be in for a treat -- let them bother you and you're in for a frustrating ride.
  4. 70
Amazing and infuriating in roughly equal measure.
  5. Though The Getaway's combination of driving and on-foot shooting sequences is occasionally entertaining, and the production values are impressive, usually the game just isn't fun--in place of almost every gaming convention The Getaway boldly tries to defy, it offers a significantly worse alternative.
  6. 70
It has a lot to live up to, and although it does manage it on several counts, the frustration from its down points tends to grate just a little raw on fractured nerves.
  7. 60
As a game it's nowhere near as good as Rockstar's GTA franchise, but its excellent storytelling and slick production values make it an experience worth having.
  8. Simply aimed too high, and fell short. The basics of the game, like control and fun should have been figured out before anyone tried to make it into a movie.
  9. The biggest hindrance in The Getaway involves its user interface - or lack thereof - as the development team attempted to make the game look and play out like a movie.
  10. PSM Magazine

A curious mix of brilliant artistry and some less-than-brilliant game design. [Mar 2003, p.41]
  11. Worth checking out just for the driving sequences through an ultra-realistic London alone. However, the gun fighting action just does not deliver the same level of gameplay.
  12. Electronic Gaming Monthly

If you're a fan of films like "Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch," you'll feel right at home with this twisted tale. [Mar 2003, p.122]
  13. The Getaway has an intense storyline with very little in the way of humor.
  14. The driving missions are decent but frustrating, as it is sometimes difficult to know where the game wants you to go without a map.
  15. Often frustrating due the limitations associated with a linear narrative, its lack of incentives to replay missions, and its stubborn attitude in not providing clear visual feedback on how well the player is doing at any given stage.
  16. Cheat Code Central
    60
Nowhere near as engaging as "GTA 3," "Vice City" or even "Max Payne."
  17. The efforts put into the acting and story deserve a game with better graphics, less glitches, and more refined gameplay.
  18. This turned out to be a "good mediocre" game. It would have been so much better if only the basic features such as adjustable camera angles were an option here.

This game is cool but the only problem is that the cars are to slow but I think it is still better than Grantheftauto3/vice city.

The humour, graphics and superb story line are the biggest acheivment of this title. Once you've got used to the sluggish controls, slightly too realistic driving physics and the awkward but rewarding aiming system this game can be pretty cool. But as you get further you grow bored of the cut scenes, the constant repeating of the same tasks and similar missions. A word of warning, if you're the kinda guy who gets infuriated to the point where you wanna put your controller through the TV give this game a miss! The feel of a movie is what this game stes out to do and it delivers but that's also the biggest flaw. If I wanna watch a movie I will. Definitely worth playin' should take a week or less to crack. Try an take advantage of some stores 10 day return policy (oops shouldn't really say that, ha). A must if you live in London though. Full Review »

The only good things about this game are the graphics and the story. Other than that, the gameplay is terrible and leaves a lot to be desired.

The game is bordering on unplayable, due to bad controls. You can only move around with one thumbstick and the auto-aim is severely inaccurate. There's no HUD, meaning you won't know what you're doing half the time and there's a steep learning curve due to bad level design.

This game, along with Driver 3, is the reason why Grand Theft Auto will always remain superior in my opinion. Only try if you're really interested.
