  • Summary: (Also known as "King of Fighters: Maximum Impact 2") Enhanced 3D graphics and game play mechanics. The King of Fighters 2006 takes the fighting genre to a whole new level. Several new KOF characters, as well as returning favorites and hidden bonus characters. Classic SNK characters Kula Diamond and Billy Kane, for the first time in 3D. Beautiful background stages including NEOGEO Land. In-depth storyline featuring a different ending for each character. All-new mini-games. English and Japanese voice options. [SNK Playmore] Expand

  1. If you really liked the potential held by The King of Fighters: Maximum Impact, The King of Fighters 2006 is the realization of that potential. It's not going to change the mind of anyone who is fervently anti-3D KOF, but it's the most solid “alternative fighting game” we've seen in a long time.
  2. There is a lot of depth with the various gameplay modes and things to unlock to keep you busy.
  3. It's fast-paced, over the top and easy to pick up, but damn difficult to put down.
  4. Not the most stylish fighter, but those desperately seeking a bruising helping of Tekken-lite action should look here. [Aug 2007, p.84]
  5. Frustratingly difficult. [Sept 2007, p.81]

Neither the best looking 3D fighting game on the market nor is it the most innovative, but the characters ooze with personality and the move lists are impressive.
  7. It’s a mystery how two such very different games manage to share so many things in common. In away it’s almost a relief that Maximum Impact 2 is so poor, as it allows XI to bask in its own glory, an example of how the 2D fighting genre isn’t dead and hopefully an opportunity for younger gamers to appreciate the concept of gameplay being greater than eye-candy.

The King of Fighters 2006, the sequel to KOF: Maximum Impact, continues the storyline from the previous installment. There's a lot of content, like character specific intros with voice dialog in both English and Japanese. All characters have 2 different outfits with 8 colors total, many of which are throwbacks and references of other characters in the SNK universe. The soundtrack is very memorable, as opposed to the OST of other KOFs during that same period. The only downside, in my opinion, is that the combo system is too loose, but otherwise any and every combo from the 2D games is here, and then some. Collapse

KoF 2006 is a really fun game with great gameplay but graphics wise, it can't really compare to Tekken 5. After all, fun is what is important and KoF 2006 delivers fun in tons. Expand
