I am a changed man after playing this game and I think anybody who hasn't bothered to play golf games before should really give this a try; you'll be surprised, I promise.

How exactly did they manage to make Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 a better game? By making it more varied, and thus, more replayable. By far, the biggest upgrade to the game is the new GameFace II system, which allows you to create a player who looks like just about anyone you could possibly imagine.
  3. The courses are stunningly handsome and the golfing action and ball physics are true to life. The game has an almost limitless replay value.
  4. Together with a deep career mode, eight new courses (14 total) and, of course, online gameplay, this latest Tiger Woods is as good as it gets. [Oct 2004, p.88]
  5. Even though the overall look and presentation has not received a glowing amount of attention, it is what EA has done as far as tweaking the controls, A.I. and adding a monster amount of modes and options that will keep fans of the links playing for another year to come.
  6. Heartbreakingly realistic physics. [Nov 2004, p.84]
  7. The addition of legendary club swingers such as Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer to the roster adds credibility to balance out the fantasy golfers. It's also refreshing to see so many new courses. [Nov 2004, p.116]
  8. The Legends Mode isn't as deep as it could be, but for as long as it lasts its quite fun to play. Along with a slue of other modes, you are looking at a game that really is a whole lot of fun.

The team has certainly used the past year to polish up what was already an addictive golf videogame, but much like with 2004 most of the advancements come in the form of features and not necessarily gameplay enhancements.
  10. It may not be revolutionary, but it has enough going for it to suck in most gamers, regardless of their skill level or feelings toward golf. Only haughty golf purists or those truly burnt out on the Tiger Woods franchise should consider getting their golfing fix elsewhere.
  11. Considering that we're still ploughing through the 2004 edition without complaint, we daresay there'll be more than enough to fill the time between now and next year, when we'll inevitably see Tiger Woods 2006 if his career-skid interface hasn't become any more severe.
  12. A great game of golf with enough depth to please simulation fans while making things accessible to newcomers to the series. The game’s Game Face II feature is quite fun and will take up a few hours of players’ time on its own.

The kind of huge game that's easy to lose yourself in for weeks and months on end, sparkling with a ridiculous array of ways to play, great controls, and more unlockables than you can count. [Nov 2004, p.138]
  14. Tiger Woods 2005 is a birdie to "2004's" eagle, but that doesn't change the fact that it's one of the best sports games out there.
  15. An unbelievable amount of gameplay, solid online play, plenty of different modes, that delicious analog swing. [Nov 2004, p.140]
  16. The inclusion of GameFace II, Tour Difficulty mode and Tiger Proofing provides plenty of player customization options that fans of the sport will enjoy. Plus, the inclusion of Tiger Vision allows people who've never picked up a club to feel like a golf pro.
  17. The foliage resembles that found in a pop-up book, the mingames are growing old, and though "2004" revolutionized the game, 2005 is mostly spit and polish. [Nov 2004, p.138]
  18. There is a tremendous amount of detail in the character models that are already game in addition to all of the options available when creating your own character.
  19. The replay value can be summed up in one word: Multiplayer. This is where Tiger Woods 2005 truly shines. Two great golfing players will have matches go down to one mistake, or one lucky shot, which will add to the tension and the desire to do better.
  20. Gamers wanting the most realistic golf experience need not continue their search – they'll find exactly what they're looking for (and things they didn't even know they wanted) in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005.
  21. After last year's revolutionary success, this game - like "Madden" - is slowing down with age. [Oct 2004, p.125]
  22. With online play and a variety of new modes including the chance to take on some of the greatest golfers in history as well as Tiger himself, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 is the premiere console golf game.
  23. The game seems dead set on making new players comfortable--but this inadvertently sucks out a lot of the challenge.
  24. The new features are generally welcomed but don’t change the fact that this is largely the same game you probably spent way too much time with last year.
  25. Almost impossible to fault. Its bizarre split personality of serious golf-sim vs crazy-in-the-face 'attitood' is the only half-slug in a perfect sporting sandwich. [PSM2]
  26. There's more to do here than any other sports game we can think of, it's one of the few multiplayer sports games that just about anybody will play whether they care about golf or not, and it's well executed and designed in a great number of ways. What's disappointing is the sense that the game's unsure of where to go next, and anybody who played the previous versions will probably feel a bit let down by EA's lack of ambition.
  27. It’s debatable whether or not this is worth buying if you own last year’s game…it comes down to how rich you are and how much you like golf. [Nov 2004, p.118]
  28. Although experienced players will probably find the game too easy the new features, inclusion of legendary players and ten new courses will make it difficult for fans of the series to avoid purchasing it and a must for anyone looking for a console golf game.
  29. EA’s decision to pander to casual gamers and non-golf fans with “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005” threatens to obliterate the reputation the series has built over the past three years as the console golf sim to beat.

If, however, you already own one of the previous versions, then the reasons to consider an upgrade are negligible.

The analogue control scheme introduced by EA's Tiger Woods series remains its single biggest innovation and it certainly continues to keep it ahead of the competition here. Aside from that very little has really changed with the series in a good while but, with its wealth of options and polished gameplay, it is really the only choice for golf fans (even if it is only a semi-realistic sim nowadays). It's been said, but I agree - the best golf game ever and certainly in my top 5 games ever.
