  1. 3D Dot Game Heroes is a wonderfully presented game, with a clever concept that is well-executed throughout.
  2. 3D Dot Game Heroes is a beautiful homage to the gaming industry. It's a great adventure, but the basic gameplay will make you want to play the upcoming Zelda even more.
  3. 3D Dot Game Heroes does have its moments and fun features, like a cute little avatar editor (guess what I made), and the ability to take screenshots and save them to your PS3's photo gallery. But every one of the problems it suffers from elsewhere is something that Legend of Zelda, through its longevity and the massive expertise of its designers, has either long since overcome or never had to worry about anyway.
  4. One of the best looking games ever, but its awe for retro Zelda ruins hopes for similarly inspired gameplay.
  5. Often funny, visually good and very inspired by Zelda […], 3D Dot Game Heroes does a great job without ever be boring.

As it stands, though, you'll need to be really hankering for some old-school gameplay to enjoy 3D Dot Game Heroes. I wasn't able to manage it, but I suspect there are quite a few of you out there who would actually enjoy this game from start to finish. You know who you are.
  7. 3D Dot Game Heroes is fun for a while, but its nostalgia factor wears off too soon, and gamers are left with a title that is more fun to look at than it is to play.
  8. There will be some gluttons for punishment out there who will love Silicon Studio's tribute from end to end, and more power to them for their perseverance against all good reason, but the vast majority of gamers in this day and age will find that 3D Dot Game Heroes wears out its welcome all too soon.
  9. 60
Nostalgic moments are crushed by poor design choices in an ultimately futile attempt to recreate classic gaming.
  10. At the budget price of $39.99, 3D Dot Game Heroes is cheap, nostalgic fun, and will find a very special place in old-school gamers' hearts, but it ultimately falls short of source material that is roughly two decades old.
  11. If you look past the tricky visuals, something that's admittedly pretty hard to do, you'll see a game that's operating on a lot of borrowed charm.
  12. It's a funny and charming little game, but it plays the retro card a little bit too much. A lot of the gameplay feels very dated in a modern game, and you can't make the same allowances for age that you can with an actual retro title.

To their credit, Atlus seems to acknowledge 3DDGH as the lightweight diversion it is, pricing the game well below the standard for a PlayStation 3 title and bundling a bunch of Japan's bonus DLC content onto the disc to boot.
  14. There are a ton of in-jokes, sure. But when you've heard them all before, it feels less like a tribute and more of a "we ran out of interesting things to say for ourselves", and when you haven't heard them you won't get them anyway.
  15. Essentially, Dot Game is a next-gen homage to early NES RPGs. This is a 23-year-old game design with a 3D graphic 'overhaul' - no more, no less. If you pine for the past, this should keep you entertained, but it may frustrate new gamers. [July 2010 p75]
  16. A curiosity. An inferior imitation of a two-decade-old series, it's nevertheless delivered with obvious affection for its inspiration and considerable charm of its own. [June 2010, p.105]
  17. A rather mediocre adventure. [June 2010, p.111]
  18. A decent adventure with some good ideas, mostly ripped off from better games. [July 2010, p.93]
  19. If you're of the mind that the Zelda series has been recycling the same ideas for far too long now then 3D Dot Game Heroes will only exacerbate your grounded frustrations. [June 2010, p.88]

If you ever wan't to see a game like the original Zelda, this is as close as you'll probably get. The graphics look beautiful, it looks like someone took a bunch of cubes and stuck them together. This game is also really fun. Full Review »

Only buy/rent this one if you're looking to play a Zelda-Clone. This game does nothing to further or detract from the Zelda design, except make a few alterations. The other reviewers of this site and the critics really said it best, "retro adventure game built for HD." That's really all it is. With that said, if you fully enjoy this genre and can see yourself playing it all the way through, then it is definitely worth renting (first), and buying (if you want 100% completion). Full Review »
