The survivor mode is like the game itself in a microcosm. It's rote and uninspired, a desultory thoughtless collage of bits and pieces surgically removed from the movies and dropped lifelessly into a dated engine.
  2. Despite the years since the last installment, the formula continues to be fresh and witty.
  3. If you’re a huge fan of anything AvP then it’s sure to be a definite “Yes”, as the game pays the kind of homage to the franchise you might expect it would. If, on the other hand, you’re a devotee of one or more of its’ many components – Aliens, Predators, sci-fi or first-person-shooters – then you’ll need to give the decision much more serious consideration.
  4. This is a mediocre effort in every sense of the word.
  5. Aliens vs. Predator provides a nice multiplayer part and a good marine campaign. Nevertheless, it doesn’t live up to its expectations at all.
  6. Let us be honest. If this game was released WITHOUT the license, absolutely no one would care about it.
  7. Overall, the multiplayer takes center stage here and what's left is a mediocre campaign at best. My recommendation is a weekend rental -- get through the campaign in a sitting or two and then spend several hours with multiplayer to see if this one is worth your gaming dollar.
  8. A hastily assembled three-in-one anachronism which proves just one thing: that terrifying and terrible are not mutually exclusive. [Apr 2010, p.93]
  9. Beyond some unconvincing visuals and some technical flaws, Aliens Vs Predator proves to be a well crafted FPS, fully able to recreate the engaging and terrifying atmosphere of its cinematic counterparts. Rebellion has definitely managed to capitalize on Aliens Vs Predator's source materials.
  10. Aliens vs Predator is a game that needed to improve certain aspects, but still not a bad game at all, but requires a watchful eye before being acquired.
  11. Besides a great setting, some good multiplayer modes and the the two creatures' charisma, this is your average FPS. Not a bad game, but we expected much more from Rebellion.
  12. Like an antithesis to Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, it proves that two great flavors don't always taste great together. [Issue#203, p.87]
  13. Despite the much talked about three unique campaigns, this is a game that puts its multiplayer in the spotlight, but there's very little innovation and even less of a reason to choose this game over the myriad of better online experiences out there.
  14. As it stands now, you'd probably have more fun being on To Catch a Predator than playing Aliens Vs. Predator.
  15. The too short campaigns, coupled with the average multiplayer makes it the type of game that you'll play for about a week, sell and then forget about. Had Rebellion tweaked the A.I., added much-needed extras and fleshed out each character's story (with different scenery), this could have been the greatest AVP of all time. For now, we'll have to settle for it being superior to the lackluster films.

Fails to do both the genre and the franchise justice. [Apr 2010, p.87]
  17. Rebellion is unable to recreate the glory days of the first game. In trying, they have been way too conservative. The result is a game that looks and feels a lot like the original, which doesn’t hold up that much in this day and age. The multiplayer compensates for the single player, but not enough.
  18. Rebellion's struggle to get back to the studio's old ways of brilliance continues with another lackluster action game. Sure, the Predator-part of the campaign is exciting and the multiplayer is ok. But the rest is sub par action with boring graphics.
  19. The controls for Predators and Xenomorphs may be a bit tricky and the AI sometimes doesn't show any "Intelligence" at all, but nevertheless: AvP is a most-have for fans of the movies, as well as the games - especially if you're into absolute multiplayer-mayhem and don't mind "some" gore.
  20. While there is a lot to like in Aliens vs. Predators, it's far from a great game. There's usually something to complain about at every turn, and every great element is flawed in some small way. Despite these faults, mistakes, and missteps, it's still an utterly enjoyable and unique experience, making the game more than the sum of its parts.
  21. A potentially epic scare-fest with a slew of neat ideas ruined by bungled execution. Shame. [Apr 2010, p.74]
  22. Alien Vs. Predator does a few things right, a whole lot wrong, and somehow manages to feel inferior to a game that Rebellion made ten years ago. [Apr 2010, p.132]
  23. The attention to detail, the well-considered level design, and the sense of momentum that characterize the finest shooters are missing here. Aliens vs. Predator is sometimes enjoyable but never escapes an overwhelming sense of carelessness, so while it may remind you of the good old days, it fails to recapture them.
  24. The control gripes aside, Aliens vs Predator is a good game, but it will certainly appeal more to fans of the two franchises.
  25. A lot of promise mixed in with failed execution is what riddles Aliens vs. Predator.
  26. A lackluster effort compared to the previous two games, and I think a lot more polish and thought could have went into making it more fun to play.
  27. Alien vs. Predator is not the greatest of games, but it is not all bad. Also with the poor visuals and a multiplayer system that isn’t all that interesting, you’ll probably put the game down once you finish all the campaign stories.
  28. Aliens vs. Predator is gory as hell. Only minor drawbacks such as the missing subtitles in the diary – at least in the German version – impair the atmosphere. The space marines are simply too average like in any arcade shooter, but to hunt as a predator or an alien is very entertaining.
  29. I begged /Aliens vs. Predator/ to be better but it wouldn’t happen. It had an opportunity to be an outstanding title but so many flaws with the characters and gameplay are present that even an ardent fan of both species. like I am, can’t ignore. The whole thing felt underpowered and half-hearted. Mediocre graphics, dreadful combat and an insane waste of assets and ideas leads me to believe that Rebellion must have thought that the species-popularity alone would carry the game. Devotees of both Aliens and Predators may want to check out the multiplayer but save yourself the letdown and don’t get too excited about anything else.

Aliens vs. Predator could have been a truly great game. It’s there, you can almost feel it, but it’s constantly ripped away from you because of some poor design decisions and a general lack of quality that keeps the game from having that triple-A feeling.
  31. 85
A game that's going to stoke the hearts of anyone who ever fell in love with the original films – which is likely anyone who's ever picked up a game pad.
  32. In conclusion, Aliens vs. Predator may not offer anything new in terms of gameplay and features a relatively short campaign mode, however it’s actually good old fashioned fun and if you’re a fan of either of these two franchises, than you’ll definitely be alien heaven.
  33. Aliens vs. Predator seems to be an ok game at the start, but in the end it disappoints a bit. The AI of the enemy is dreadful and the story is predictable.
  34. When Aliens vs. Predator is at it's best it actually does capture the essence of the movie franchise. But for the most part this feels like an obsolete title that should have been released three or four years ago. Antiquated game play mechanics, underwhelming presentation, repetitive campaign scenarios and horribly unbalanced online multiplayer are just some of the issues that makes this one of the big disappointments of 2010.
  35. An average attempt that doesn’t really fan the flames of this tiresome feud.
  36. Aliens vs Predator is a pretty cool addition to the epic of the two races, violent extraterrestrial beings. Although the graphics are not state of the art and the game's not the best first person shooter out there, it gives the chance to live the terrific environment of the movies and it's loyal to the spirit of both characters.
  37. There are some clever ideas here, but like a good chestburster they haven't been given time to gestate.
  38. 79
The variety, fan service and attention to detail here make AVP a must-have for fans of the franchises, but thanks to a variety of inconsistencies and flaws, it fails to measure up to the 1999 PC title of the same name. [Issue#189, p.59]
  39. AvP far outstrips the movies of the same name, but is no where near the landmark experience that the original game was.
  40. Possibly the greatest movie-inspired title ever. This positively oozes atmosphere and is a must for the fans. [Mar 2010, p.72]
  41. Some of these problems to dissolve a little in online multiplayer, with 18 players going head-to-head as different species. [Apr 2010, p.98]
  42. AvP's multiplayer is gory, gratifying, and will bring an evil little smile to your face. [Apr 2010, p.76]
  43. Aliens vs Predator has locked its sights completely on James Cameron's movie Aliens from 1986, and makes a real effort to emulate the feeling in the game. And it succeeds to a certain degree in the marine campaign, with claustrophobic firefights and authentic sounds. However, the story is both extremely linear and pretty short, and all we're left with are the multiplayer modes, and though they may be fun they can't carry the entire game on their shoulders.
  44. 80
Aliens vs Predator is quite a unique game. You can play with the three factions in the singleplayer and the story of each faction is coming to a climax at the end of the game. After that, you can also play the multiplayer with a few different modes and the most interesting part of the multiplayer is that you can play with the three factions in one map, that delivers very chaotic, but funny gameplay.
  45. Three flavours of average, and a fantastic opportunity missed. [Apr 2010, p.84]
  46. There are so many places that just scream out for more attention; I couldn’t play for more than 15 minutes without going, “oh come on; that could’ve been awesome!” There’s just always something that reared its ugly head and it’s absolutely unavoidable.
  47. Aliens vs Predator it's a fun to play FPS. The singleplayer is quite enjoyable if played with one of the creatures, but unfortunately playing as marine doesn't scare as it once did. Aesthetically the games looks quite old on consoles, but it sounds exactly as the movies. After finishing the game, you'll find a complete and quite well made multiplayer mode, entertaining thanks to the good calibration of the three races.
  48. You won't be buying AvP for its single-player though, and if you are you may find yourself sorely disappointed. Rebellion has built AvP around its multiplayer, which is both well-constructed and surprisingly well-balanced.
  49. Ultimately, it lacks the action set pieces that helped to push the FPS genre to where it is today.
  50. Aliens Vs Predator tries to stay faithful to the franchise but in turn creates a mediocre FPS that is over far too quickly. The multiplayer does add some excitement but rage quitters and bad losers will spoil your games until it is fixed. Movie fans will get a little buzz from playing their favourite monsters but the whole experience is dull overall.
  51. Overall, though, Aliens vs. Predator is a dream game for fans of the source material and, despite lacking a slick coat of whiz-bang graphical polish, ranks as one of the most unique and absorbing first-person titles for the PS3.
  52. Aliens vs Predator occasionally offers brief moments of entertainment, but it's ultimately let down by an unimaginative approach to the single-player mode that never quite manages to match the terror, suspense and brilliance of the original movies.
  53. Aliens vs Predator does nothing to revolutionize the genre or the franchise, but does provide a few visceral moments of pure action as well as offering a little bit of variety in it's multiplayer offerings.
  54. Its atmosphere, concept and overall proposal are of great quality, but it fails in some little things, and sometimes those little things are very important.
  55. Aliens Vs Predator is a great deal of fun, but there's no getting away from the fact that it feels somewhat dated and that the marine campaign is head and shoulders above the other two.
  56. 70
Aliens vs. Predator is a worthy title in the franchise. The atmosphere is nice and it's a lot of fun to play as Alien, Predator or Marine. But only this possibility is not enough for the game to rise above it's competitors.
  57. 70
There are times where you are going to just want to put the controller down and say: "I can find a better game somewhere else". However if you stick with it, you will find something to like underneith it all, and will definetly have some fun with Aliens Versus Predator.

This game was completely awesome. Loved playing and killing other dudes lol. This game is the best i've played so far and i hope the sequel will be in 3D. But it wasn't just the game, but also the story was great and something people wanted in a story. Full Review »

I am halfway through this game and so far have to say it has been very entertaining. I must point out I got it for a lot less than the original retail cost, but as it can be picked up cheap now I have based my score on it being a 'budget' title.

The three campaigns all play differently and are authentic, closely matching the look and feel of the source material. the visuals are not triple A but they do the job and in some places really shine, especially as the predator during finishing moves and cloaking. Once you get the hang of the play styles you can really feel for each character and the game can be very tense or empowering, depending on who you are playing as.

The single player campaigns are quite short and can be completed in a few hours each but there are three of them and different levels of difficulty and collectibles to add some longevity.

I can recommend this if you are a fan of the films or even more so if you liked the original PC or jaguar games as this does play like an old school shooter at times, which isn't really a bad thing!
