Sure, there are a few plot holes and clichéd moments in Beyond Two Souls but like Heavy Rain, it may become one of your most memorable gaming experiences to date.

Beyond: Two Souls is one of the most poignant and enthralling stories we have encountered in a video game, capable of stirring up the same depth of emotion as great works from the mediums of film and literature.

Beyond: Two Souls is one of the PS3′s finest games and is neck-and-neck with The Last of Us for telling the best story and having the best graphics of the console generation.

Nothing less than a masterpiece. The game looks absolutely phenomenal and Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe deliver a great accomplishment with their acting. Writer David Cage grabs us with his compelling and emotional story. There are a few downsides, gameplay is pretty much the same as Heavy Rain, but that doesn’t spoil the greatness of this game.

Beyond: Two Souls is so unique, powerful and engaging that it's easy to forgive some of its gameplay flaws. Quite simply, a stunning production.

The beautiful graphics and facial expressions bond you to Jodie, and the raw emotion embodied by Aiden is conveyed not via gameplay but by sound design and the reactions of the supporting cast. By the end of the game you are as connected to Jodie as Aiden is.

The team at Quantic proves that if games are made correctly, players will have an experience they will feel for many years to come. For this reason alone, I love this industry and those who constantly want to bring the best gaming experiences available, and Beyond: Two Souls is a perfect example of this.

The most gripping storytelling a game might ever have produced combined with one of the most basic and boring gameplay I have tried makes for a very strange experience from a critics point of view. But the tears, the stomach ache and the joy supersedes clunky controls and the bad illusion of choice.

The term "interactive film" is thrown around often, but this is the first game to actually feel like one. Carefully maintaining a balance between its social context and supernatural elements, the game refuses to give into standard video game tropes and remains a mature and thoughtful story throughout. It’s poignant, thrilling and even a bit frightening at times.

Bigger in scope and better executed than Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls doesn't manage to tell a great story all the time like its predecessor, although it's an experience you'll want to try.
  11. 90
After playing it, you will feel extremely connected to Jodie, the game does everything to develop this emotional bond between the player and the protagonist. It suffers from some of the interactive storytelling limitations, but it’s the most balanced and accomplished game from Quantic Dream so far.

Beyond: Two Souls is really difficult to judge with the usual tools because it’s such an unusual game. Let’s say that this one manages to impressively overcome its faults to deliver a truly unique experience. Gameplay in Beyond is only a way to include you, to make you participate to this emotional journey and to make you touch the heart of the game, its masterpiece: the story and all the narrative aspect that comes with it. The kind of game you remember for a long time.

Beyond is both better and worse than its illustrious predecessor Heavy Rain. It features a more varied gameplay, a better story, talented Hollywood actors and outstanding graphics... but it also lacks something: the ability to make truly decisive choices throughout the adventure. Significant changes you can make story-wise are actually concentrated at the end. However, games of this type and this quality are still too rare to deny yourself the pleasure.

Ellen Page has given the performance of her life and David Cage has penned the best script of his. When AAA releases are serving up so much similarity, Quantic Dream buck the trend and offer something different. Don’t put your PlayStation 3 back in its box just yet, or you’ll miss the studio’s biggest triumph to date.

Beyond: Two Souls is the natural evolution of Heavy Rain, an epic adventure game with a great script, awesome dialogue and rock solid characters. Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe have done a splendid job acting for this game and David Cage has created an excellent title adding cool gameplay features to the Heavy Rain experience.

David Cage and his team at Quantic Dream always try to deliver unique experiences and Beyond: Two Souls is another one of these superb "interactive dramas" only this development house is capable of creating.

Beyond is hands-down one of the most emotionally accomplished experiences I have ever had in a video game, and it’s enjoyable from start to finish. The controls and gameplay are tiresome, and they can be difficult to manage (or boring), but they’re of little consequence compared to the well-written story, the depth of the characters, and the empathy you feel toward them.

Let's face it, if you're not into stories, you shouldn't buy Beyond: Two Souls. After all, player input is kept to a bare minimum and even then it manages to take you out of the experience, as it needlessly slows down the action. However, those who love a good and well-told story can't go wrong with Beyond: Two Souls. Both Ellen Page's and Willem Dafoe's acting is highly convincing and the visuals are appropriately jaw-dropping. Co-op is also a feature very much worth exploring, as it succeeds in turning this "interactive movie" into an effective two-player experience.

At the end of the story, many of the faces encountered during this adventure will be kept somewhere, deep in your heart. Beyond: Two Souls is able to keep your emotions extremely high from the beginning to the ending(s). Unfortunately, David Cage didn't prove that it's possible to tell such a good story without sacrificing the gameplay.

This could be your favorite game in the last ten years. Or rightly the opposite. It does have personality, but there's no way we can tell you how it is or how you're going to feel when you play it, so the only way to find out is giving it a try it.
  23. Taken on its own merits, Beyond: Two Souls is a triumph of interactive storytelling, betrayed only perhaps by not quite living up to its lofty narrative ambitions in its latter third.
  24. Oct 8, 2013

Beyond: Two Souls, with its plot and production, is a really ambitious project. And it is also a further step into blending movies and video games together.

Beyond: Two Souls could be considered an experimentation on new dramatic devices within a game that is visually stunning and whose interactive scenery will be the delight of all Quantic Dream fans, despite its limitations.

Beyond: Two Souls is an emotional and amazing movie-like trip.
  27. 85
Beyond is not a perfect game. It has control flaws that are glaring and some mundane issues like pop-in that will bother a number of gamers, but if you are looking for something with enough heart and passion to tell a truly great story in a unique and exciting way, Beyond: Two Souls is a must have.

Beyond: Two Souls is the evolution of Heavy Rain formula. Quantic Dream gets thrilled and tells a story about love and desperation following Jodie's life. A cinematic experience with stunning PS3 graphics and David Cage's signature narrative to show what lies beyond death.

Flawed and silly, but also ambitious and heartfelt, this is a game with a clear vision, like it or not, that follows through with utter conviction to the end.

It is the first game from this studio that I have enjoyed not just because I was intrigued by it, but because it executes its concepts well and puts forth an all-around solid package.

An ambitious story with real, complex characters makes BEYOND: Two Souls one of the year’s most memorable adventures, as long as you’re willing to look past some constrained and awkward gameplay.

The game still tells a beautiful, gripping tale, thanks in part to the voice and motion-capture performances of Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe, making 2011's L.A. Noire, acclaimed for its facial graphics, seem decades old.

The acting is top-notch, the writing is good, the design and implementation of the life sequences is excellent, and the mechanics are functional and ask you to remain vigilant and timely. It’s just that it doesn’t feel as cohesively polished as one would hope, and there are limitations to the QTE concept, even when it’s expanded upon.

Beyond: Two Souls’ imperfections don’t necessarily add to the title’s appeal, but this is still a game that you should experience irrespective of its flaws. While the plot takes a number of questionable turns, the outrageously ambitious subject matter, coupled with the release’s downright staggering technological achievements, make Quantic Dream’s current generation opus worth examining all the same.

Beyond: Two Souls, despite its flaws with the mechanics and the story, is a special game that needs to be played, if just to behold the new level in video game presentation. Though it's not as well-crafted in design as Telltale's The Walking Dead, Beyond: Two Souls is not that far off, cementing Quantic Dream as a cutting-edge developer in the cinematic, story-driven genre.
  38. 80
It’s like watching a great TV series. Out of the 12 hours you will only find about two hours of "real" gaming though, which might be too little for some. Insanely high production values, great story and good acting makes this worth getting if you want the best in interactive movies.
  39. As an interactive drama, it’s a fantastic work of art that’s worth checking out. But it didn’t pack enough player action to make me want to replay it and see the many different possible permutations of Jodie and Aiden’s story, beyond what I’d already experienced. And yes, that pun was intentional.

While we could have done without the non-linear storytelling, it wasn’t hard to keep tabs on the scattered episodes of Jodie’s life. Beyond: Two Souls is certainly an overall advancement on the mechanics of Heavy Rain, just don’t expect it to be David Cage’s magnum opus… that’s still to come.

Not all videogames should be like Beyond Two Souls. But be thankful that some are. Another flawed but essential tale from a man who genuinely cares and a publisher that believes in the power of videogames.
  42. Beyond’s a huge technical step forward for interactive drama, but seems less resolute than Heavy Rain not to stray back into familiar game territory. Commit to it like its actors do to the eccentric plot, though, and the rewards are gigantic – Holmes is where the heart is. Another essential purchase for interactive-drama disciples featuring a knockout turn by Page, but one that spreads itself thin telling its story through so many genres.
  43. Oct 8, 2013

With so many of the traditional elements of gameplay stripped away, like challenge and exploration, a tremendous amount of weight is put on Beyond's story to carry the day. While it's exhilarating to see a team that has worked so hard to perfect a new way of telling stories, I couldn't help wishing they had a perfect one to tell.

Much like Quantic Dream’s gritty 2010 PlayStation 3 title Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls fuses traditional film-based storytelling techniques with video game elements to create a new way of getting players emotionally invested in its characters and story. It doesn’t always work – and sometimes it feels a bit cheesy or ridiculous – but when that connection does happen, it’s something quite amazing.

I wish the story would have focused more on its emotional core than blockbuster theatrics, but I was still struck dumb by the impactful last hour. In the end, you make a truly profound choice, and see its consequences. There are multiple endings – none perfectly happy, each powerful. That’s how I’ll choose to remember Beyond – brilliant and flawed at once.

Beyond: Two Souls is one of those games which we want to applaud for its courage while we still regret how it stumbles over its own feet.

Beyond: Two Souls is amazing. This statement can be taken positively as well as negatively. Positively, thanks to its unmatched cinematic action scenes. Negatively, because of the limited gameplay. What starts as an emotional, exciting story, ends up being a grotesque tidal wave of paranormal crap. That makes this more the spiritual successor to Fahrenheit than Heavy Rain.
  48. Oct 9, 2013

Beyond: Two Souls is a difficult game to grade - you have to answer a question: do you mind having the gameplay play a supporting role? Because an interesting story, great characters and some really exciting moments are most important here. Beyond is a typical Quantic Dream game and it additionally simplifies many aspects. I had fun experiencing this story, but Heavy Rain is a better and more interesting game.

It’s such a shame to see Quantic Dream make the same mistakes they’ve made in the past, because it feels like Beyond: Two Souls could be shaping up to become by far the best thing the developers have done until that hope is destroyed by the games’ poor second half.
  50. Oct 8, 2013
    75
Don’t get me wrong, the game tells an interesting and emotional story, and the acting is top notch, but it does aimlessly plod along here and there. Thankfully, Quantic Dream ensured that Beyond: Two Souls would wrap up in an amazing, thought-provoking way which does make the ride very much worth taking.
  51. Oct 8, 2013

Thanks to a script that shifts gears too often and too rapidly, Beyond: Two Souls never really hits its narrative stride, but David Cage’s latest effort is still worth a look if you’re a fan of his singular approach to interactive storytelling.
  52. Oct 8, 2013
    75
There’s always room for innovation, and I know in the future that games will continue to achieve things I didn’t think were possible, but Beyond didn’t hit the points I needed to really be impressed, especially when the bar has already been set high by other narrative-driven games.
