Take an idea from someone who's designed multiple amazing games, add in a team who makes games they'd want to play and loves what they do, avoid the red tape of the retail distribution process, and what do you get? A great game like Deathspank, which provides a $60 experience for just $15.

If you like sweet loot, hacking things to death, looking at beautiful landscapes and laughing at good writing, you might want to pick up DeathSpank. However, although the game shines in many areas, it does have its flaws.

DeathSpank takes roughly 8 hours to be cleared, an excellent length for a low-budget and cheap game. It's fun and engaging and unique enough to appeal fans of hack'n'slash games with it wide variety of items and locations. DeathSpank may not have any big expectation but it is nevertheless very enjoyable and polished to be suggested to any player looking for a funny, fast adventure.

There hasn't been a funnier, more singularly creative videogame since Brütal Legend. And where Double Fine disappointed some with odd game design choices, DeathSpank does nothing but please.
  5. DeathSpank is an absolute blast, a ton of fun to play, and thanks to a well-written script and befitting voice acting, it's comedic gold.
  6. If you've played any Diablo-style RPG and any Monkey Island-style adventure and enjoyed them, you know you'll like DeathSpank. It's a hilarious and seamless combination of the two genres more than worthy of your 15 bucks and a couple weekends of your time.
  7. And again Ron Gilbert shows why his games are so appreciated. Deathspank is a stylish action game with a great sense of humor.
  8. Fifteen years ago DeathSpank would not only have been regarded as an accomplished and polished retail game, it would likely have been viewed as a leader in its field. It's an indication of just how comprehensive and refined DeathSpank is as a title.
  9. Ron Gilbert delivers another sweet piece of art. Hilarious and technically fantastic, Deathspank fails to become another classic just because of its repetitive gameplay and quests design.
  10. If you got it bad for the Monkey Island franchise, DeathSpank might just be the game for you! With great graphics and a hilarious dialouge, one just can't go wrong with this action RPG.

DeathSpank is fun to play, funny to watch and it allows a second player to jump in at any time and assist by playing sparkles the incredibly camp magical elf. What's not to love?
  12. There are so many good things in DeathSpank; the amount of loot collecting (and bacon), quests to complete and fantastic look and feel of the world make up for any shortcomings and give a lot of value and enjoyment. If you're a fan of action-RPGs, you will not be disappointed, and those looking for a game that will bring them into the genre need look no further than DeathSpank.
  13. While the game is certainly long and a blast to play, there is a lack of variety when it comes to quests.
  14. DeathSpank: Fast, humorous and vibrant. DeathSpank is a surprising downloadable hit and a marvelous and amusing Diablo clone. It's easy to play for a few minutes only to see that two hours have gone by.

DeathSpank is a great mix of different game types. The game has RPG elements in it, but is in its base a hack and slash title full of stupid humor. If you're looking for an original PlayStation Network game with a lot of different possibilities and a long duration of gaming, then DeathSpank is a great choice.
  16. A very funny, very charming game let down only by the hasty two-player mode.
  17. DeathSpank certainly isn't a perfect game by any means, but it does a very good job of bringing the loot RPG to the consoles with a good story that made us want to search every inch of the world that Hothead and Ron Gilbert has created.
  18. As a single-player game, though, DeathSpank really shines. The addictive nature of leveling up and looting treasure chests and fallen enemies is here in spades, not to be missed by fans of the genre. It's also one of the better-looking and most polished titles in the digital space.
  19. Deathspank isn't revolutionary, but it is fun.
  20. Goofy humor and a bevy of wacky objectives make it easy to lose yourself in this action role-playing game.
  21. Funny and downright mental, DeathSpank is a refreshing RPG that never fails to entertain.

It would be great news if the sense of humor of Deathspank spreads to other games, or at least if Ron Gilbert gets encouraged and makes more games.

DeathSpank lets gamers experience humorous dialogues, good gameplay and stunning graphics. Be sure to pick it up the next time you visit the PlayStation Store or the Xbox Live Marketplace.
  24. Some fresh ideas in this funny and debunking action RPG. What makes it really unique is the humour, and there's a good bunch of fun to be had slaying the enemies. It lacks some deeper growth of the character and some better puzzles, but for genre lovers it's really worth every cent of its small price.
  25. Deathspank is a funny game which comes up with an interesting graphics style, good humor and a lot of fun. It does also provide you with funny characters, dialogues and the most important, the glorious hero Deathspank.
  26. Even with the shortcomings of cooperative and the narrative, DeathSpank still ends up being a joyous romp through a fantasy-filled world of evil unicorns, kidnapped orphans, and sinful monks.

With the exception of food, water and, if necessary, important medications, I can't think of anything more worthy of spending $15 on this week. This is a high point for comedy in games, built on a solid foundation of time-tested gameplay and bacon that everyone should experience.
  28. It's an ace introduction to a genre that isn't well-represented on consoles, and it's funny and engaging enough to capture you for hours at a time… even if you're all by your lonesome.
  29. 75
Purely as an action-RPG, it's a competent game with a few significant flaws in the name of simplicity/accessibility, but as an experience, it shines with humor and wit all over, and makes me hopeful for an improved sequel.

A spellbinding little fantasy adventure. [Sept 2010, p.110]
  31. LEVEL (Czech Republic)
Not revolutionary but still great and fast Diablo-like hack'n'slash feast. Stylish visuals, plenty of one-liners and jokes make it unforgettable in addition to the extraordinary weapons. [Aug 2010]
  32. Playstation Official Magazine Australia
For the money you're laying down, Deathspank is like the glittering bags of swag it depicts. Highly-amusing and addictive as all hell. [September 2010 p78]
  33. Play UK
It's not for everyone, but the polished gameplay and sheer scale make DeathSpank well worth a download. [Issue#195, p.102]
  34. DeathSpank is a really funny videogame, the perfect mix between Diablo and Monkey Island. It has madness, hilarious situations and addictive gameplay. One of the hits of this summer.
  35. Games Master UK
A solid debut for a great new hero, with belly laughs to match the brawling. [Oct 2010, p.77]
  36. It won't blow you away with innovation or graphical prowess, though every aspect is enjoyable, effective, and responsive like a game should be. DeathSpank is worth it for the cheeky demeanor, simply put, but well worth it for sure.

With a plot so childish and full of holes it resembles the victim of a firing squad and a paralysed combat system that doesn't evolve beyond "MSAH TAH BUTTNZ", the game falls down a well from a gameplay perspective, but it's beautifully written, genuinely funny, and not afraid to take the piss, with Deathspank booming, in his frankly brilliant voice, "GREETINGS NON-PLAYER CHARACTER" or when asked if he's never seen a dog before, he booms, "NEVER FROM THE OUTSIDE" implying Deathspank has sex with animals. All in all, funny but flawed. Full Review »

I really loved DeathSpank. So much, in fact, that it is my new online alias. It's a mindless hack-and-slash with hilarious quests, dialogue,I really loved DeathSpank. So much, in fact, that it is my new online alias. It's a mindless hack-and-slash with hilarious quests, dialogue, and "cinematics." I want to let everyone know who decides to drop the $15 on this to please go in with an open mind. If you only like serious games, or think that video games aren't supposed to make you laugh, or perhaps you have a hard time noticing the small things, then this game probably isn't for you. Personally, I loved the attention to detail. Every NPC has a unique name, few of which are actual names (IE: Guy Who Lost His Wallet, Guy Who Needs a Friend). The way in which DeathSpank introduces himself or greets individuals (Greetings, Non-descript citizen!) is just fantastic, in my opinion. There are times when I had to repeat dialogue because it was just priceless. You really have to enjoy the little things in this game, and if you do, it's beyond "worth" the $15. Another example, is the way the character (in the inventory screen) reacts to certain items when equipped. If a weapon is equipped, he'll sometimes lower and cover his head, peeking upwards and waggling the weapon in the air to see if it does anything. If you equip some shoulder pads, he may do a little dance for you. The only reason this game gets a 9 from me, is the difficulty of some quests. There is minimal dialogue explaining the quests. Hints are given on an item basis (you must use an item to obtain a hint, up to 3 hints that will end up telling you exactly where to go, and the item seems to be quite rare and is not purchase-able, but drops from anywhere and anything). Other than that, I really enjoyed this game. As far as playability goes, it's perhaps worth a second play through with a friend, but once through was enough for me. I am VERY excited for the next comedic installment: "Thongs of Virtue." Full Review »
