It seems counter-intuitive to praise a game for reducing its graphical quality from a previous version, but in this case it was a good move. A Realm Reborn’s toned-down approach lets it run smoothly on both mid-range PCs and PlayStation 3 while retaining much of the beauty.

Three years after the disastrous launch of Final Fantasy XIV, Square Enix produces an high quality MMORPG, with a revised and corrected gameplay that fit perfectly on the Sony's Dualshock controller.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is not a game, it’s a manual about what you have to do when you fail. From the ashes of an embarrassing game, here we have a truly well-crafted MMO. Well Done Square Enix.
  5. Technical teething issues aside, FFXIV is a blinding online RPG. [Nov 2013, p.92]

Does it stick to the MMO tradition? Absolutely. But it takes that tradition and refines it, and captures brilliantly those less tangible elements that make a great game instead of a good one - an inviting, vibrant world, the foundations for a dynamic player economy, and the freedom to take to the world as you please.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is something that is worthy of your gaming shelf. It certainly has some growing pains it's going through, but for the most part it's a very competent and fun MMORPG.

If you’ve spent time with Final Fantasy 14 a few years back, you will not recognize the reborn Eorzea. Everything seems better connected, better thought through and better executed.
  10. It’s still far from perfect – main menu freezes abound and the EU and NA servers will frequently fail to even show up, so you’ll probs find yourself on a JP one – but when it works, it really works. Finally. [November 2013, p84]

A Realm Reborn is everything Square Enix wanted FFXIV to be and more, with a unique class system that gives players a freedom that’s not found in many MMORPGs today. It’s fun, it’s pretty, and Square Enix is 100% forgiven.

There are so many addictive and enjoyable gameplay elements in Final Fantasy XIV that WoW-schooled veterans and MMO rookies alike will love. It's been a long time coming, but A Realm Reborn is finally here, and Square Enix makes the most compelling case for subscription-based gaming in almost a decade.

A brave restart of a game that arguably should've never been made. For a series primarily resting on the solitary player experience, it manages the transition to a multiplayer environment beautifully. There's enough content, races, classes and things to do to keep both new players and old MMO-foxes occupied for a long while, and all of it well realised with the worldbuilding skills of the Final Fantasy teams.

It's been a long and painful journey for Square Enix, but the studio has finally delivered an MMORPG that lives up to the Final Fantasy name.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is an excellent game, but it's a bit too much for the aging PS3 to handle at times. While it's impressive that Square Enix managed to get the title to run on the ancient hardware at all, it's difficult to justify the monthly fee if you plan to play solely on Sony's console.
  16. If there is one thing clear about Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, it is that this MMORPG is here to stay. Squenix promises new content every two or three months and the story for the first expansion pack has already been written. It will be necessary to keep players interested. [October 2013 p.78]

After a flawed first incarnation of Final Fantasy XIV, Square Enix has rethought everything and now offers a much more polished and user-friendly game. A Realm Reborn isn't a breakthrough, but generates lots of fun. The game has a rich world, unique atmosphere, well thought-out gameplay systems and lots of things to do - Final Fantasy fans should be more than satisfied. It really is "a realm reborn".

The problems that plagued the original 2010 launch have been all but completely eradicated, and A Realm Reborn has the potential to be a truly stunning MMORPG. While the early quests are too simple, too undemanding and too familiar for RPG veterans, they do serve as a fine entry point to help acclimatise you to the world.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is the complete package. With a well-written story, characters you care about, a flexible class system, lovely visuals, and a grand soundtrack, this game offers about everything you could want, especially for fans of the Final Fantasy series.

Square Enix has learned from the failed release of Final Fantasy XIV and delivers an update worth playing. A Realm Reborn is an extremely enjoyable, if a bit repetitive MMO, the score of which is brought down by an unhealthy amount of framedrops, mediocre voice-acting and the lack of PvP.

There's a lot to like about Final Fantasy 14, but it really is reliant on your ability to overcome a lot of the issues the MMO has had for years. Final Fantasy fans will need to know what they're getting into, but once they do there's a thoroughly engrossing game to absorb yourself in.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is, without a doubt, the best MMORPG there is for PlayStation 3, and even one of the best in the whole genre. It recovers the magic that has been lost in the last installments of the saga, and combines it with a storyline full of epic moments. A "second wind" that will not disappoint.

It isn't destined to reinvent the MMORPG, but rather, to suitably rearrange the hallmarks of the genre within the confines of the celebrated Final Fantasy franchise.

A marvelous game. As someone new to MMOs, I expected to be overwhelmed by features and interface elements. Thankfully the tutorial was helpful and clear; I felt comfortable using the different features.

Gameplay is not difficult but battles are enjoyable. Monster models, true to the series, offer entertaining art styles and names.

Graphics are superb. This is simply an astoundingly beautiful game. I find myself stopping regularly to take screenshots of the landscape.

The crafting system is intuitive and fun yet deep and useful. It's certainly more involved and richer than in any console RPG that I've played. You have so many opportunities to craft what you want and to approach it from so many different classes.

The user interface can be a bit clunky at times, but it offers a good amount of information through various menus.

I'm incredibly satisfied with the game and have enjoyed my time in Eorzea. I hope you will take a spin too.

One of the best MMOs out there. The Good: Story. Lore. Class/Job system. Music. Battle System. Basically overall gameplay. Design.

    Only downside:
    Targeting system.
