John P, clearly you are new to playing games, maoning about the load pauses, which only lasts a couple of seconds and in between fire fights. Alot of games do this, half-life for example, to moan about it is like moaning about bread having crusts, dont be so stupid. Onto my thoughts, im enjoying the game, the single player is short, story and characters are terrible (rico!) but the gameplay is solid and fun enough. The multiplayer is where the game truly comes alive, really enjoying that so far. The controls can be tricky but all it takes is some setting changes to what you like and some practice and thats it. Clearly some folk like John P and Gav (didnt like gears or halo either!? why did you even buy this game if you dont like good shooters!?) are just bad at games and blame the games for their own short comings. Not saying everyone has to like the game (its not for everyone) but the reasons these guys gave were moronic. Expand

I am disappointed by Killzone 2. Even though it has received rave reviews by the critics, i have to say, i find it quite difficult to come up with positive things to say about it. The graphics are pretty nice yes, but unfortunately, games like Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 are available on PS3 and they have much more eye candy. The graphics of Gears of War 3 on Xbox 360 (I own both consoles) are almost on par. And, well, that's about all the positive things i have to say about this game. The story is a total fail. From the start i couldn't understand what we were doing on Helghan and why we were doing it. I couldn't even understand why we were supposed to be the good guys. Sure, the enemies looked menacing with all the nazi-like styling, but apart from that, the gamer doesn't have a clue what is going on, because the story is non existent. Just like the story, the characters and their conversations are completely disappointing as well. I can't say much because i just don't remember anything. My brain has immediately deleted any relevant information because it considered it junk i guess... Uncharted's story and script is light years better. The controls are adequate. I didn't like the covering mechanism -there were times that even though i was supposed to be covering, the enemies could still see me and shoot me dead- and the unimaginative way the developers chose to use the dualshock's accelerometer. Overall, a mediocre game, way worse than Gears of War series, Call of Duty, Crysis or Half Life. Certainly the biggest disappointment of all the ps3 exclusives. Expand

Killzone 2 certainly has it's moments, but i expected a lot more of a polished title for game that has been in the making for quite sometime, although the multiplayer does make up for the weak campaign it can give you the mix feeling of should i have bough or rented this title?

This was a game that I had been looking forward to for a long time, the first killzone was great, but this release was a...disappointment. The graphics are great, sure, but the game lacks any depth. The missions are the same thing over and over, and after a couple of hours of gameplay I was just trying to finish it as quickly as possible to see what happened in the end. The multiplayer is also a letdown, as the controls are clunky and unresponsive. Sorry Havok, you've failed to impress me this time. Expand

While I was part of the minority who thoroughly enjoyed the first Killzone, I have to say that Killzone 2 is a major leap forward for the franchise. Guerrilla has taken their FPS & made it a gritty, visceral experience that gave me an honest sensation of uneasiness about entering its fields of combat (yes, I almost felt afraid to enter the game it immersed me that much). They have achieved this not only with incredible graphics & environmental detail (from lingering dust in the air & your rifle scope after close explosions to rebar seen under bullet shattered concrete pillars), but they have succeeded in fleshing out the Helgast enemies. They are no longer just the 2 dimensional cardboard cutouts that pop out in fixed locations for me to shoot. From the opening speech of Helghast leader, Emperor Visari (again masterfully portrayed by Brian Cox) I knew this wasn't going to be any ordinary arcade shooter. Guerrilla has given us an enemy as tenacious & fanatical about fighting off invaders of their homeland as the SS was in the later days of World War II. They run & duck under cover when shot at and they cry out in pain when shot. The have become actual characters for me to know & fear. People who have long forsaken any diplomacy (I say people because I felt like I was fighting people, unlike other games such as COD4 online, while a superior game, still felt more like a game of tag) Alas, there is a little bit on the down side. Some of the in game dialogue did get a bit repetitive (Nice shot! yadda yadda) & somewhat juvenile. But even that wasn't enough for me to drop the score down a whole point. This is a game that deserve every one of its five stars from Playstation Magazine. To me, well worth the new release price. Expand

This game is seriously the BEST FPS i've ever experienced. The online is awesome, the story is amazing. The graphics are jaw dropping. What more do I need to say?? If you own a PS3 then you MUST get this game, you won't regret it. If you don't have a PS3 then I feel bad for you LOL! KZ2 for the win! Great job Sony & Guerilla Games!

OMG!! What a worthless mediocre game. There are so many flaws with this game that I wonder what is with the high ratings. 1) The characters are so shallow. Garza's interpretation of Macbeth was ok, however it didn't make me stand and applause. Shame.. 2) The game lacks a genuine well written story. As with every other fps, I was expecting the twist and plot of a movie like "the usual suspects" blending into the game rather than just the "walk and shoot" formula. Disappointing.. 3) Unbelievable. The game has the nerve to pause on me for a split second when it loads new areas. Last time it happened I lost my trigger happy mood to continue. 4) Frame drops. I noticed a significant amount of frame dropping by a whole(!) 2,97fps at some points. Nope. This is not the fps of our dreams. The one where we can stop shooting at a certain point, get some rest and play pool mini-games with our comrades. Lacks originality indeed. Expand

This game wins an award, but it isn't "Game of the Year", it is "Most-over hyped Game Ever". I bought a PS3 just because of this game and because I love shooters. All of the marketing totally manipulated me into making the purchase (not that I regret it now, the PS3 is a nice system). Like others said, the graphics are awesome but that can't help the other issues. First, single player is just completely boring, killzone suffers from Gears of War envy and does it's best to rip off the characters and dialog, but does it with much harsher (and annoying language) and uninspiring generic levels. But who really cares about single player, I buy shooters for the multi-player and here lies the reason I will be trading it in this week, the controls are horrible. Even with the sensitivity tweaked all the way up you constantly feel like you are walking in mud. Trying to aim at someone can be an exercise in not throwing your controller across the room, especially after you go to move the gun and u suddenly pop into a melee strike or out of aim. The lousy controls cause multiplayer games to be stripped of their strategic elements and become large like the invasion of normandy where you are just throwing bodies at one of another. I understand at some level that the developers may have done this on purpose to simulate real life, but it just doesn't work and makes for a frustrating experience. Expand

A great game and what's amazing is just how much the developers managed to improve from the first game. Which was not a bad game but at the time it seemed like a game that would not spawn a franchise but after this game you need to get ready for Killzone 3 and I myself cannot wait.

What the fuck are people doing comparing this to ANY other FPS. Call of Duty 1 is better. People go on and on and on about the graphics, their so "good" because about all the level designers did is use 4 or 5 colours and spent the rest of their time on the level. So their only doing the lest amount of work possible, yes i know the colours arent there because thats the mood of the game but that idea that their graphics are awesome is because they had nothing else to work on, I mean after playing it it didn't feel like they put work into the multiplayer system. This game kinda lived up to the hype, great graphics, intense almost all of the time, but it does not bring anything new to the fps genre go there shoot that and move on but thats not a bad thing, the controls do take awhile to get use to but use the 2 one not the default . mp is fun but the spawing points need work. its worth a buy if you have a ps3

A solid 8. The first Killzone is one of my favourite games of all time so I may be a bit biased. The MP is where the sequel really shines. The campaign is pretty fun but the story is lame, the characters shallow and the dialogue is beyond bad. Plus, there's nothing here you haven't played before. But the overall package is still really nice and this could be the best FPS the PS3 will ever have. Expand

This game is one of the more uninspiring shooters I've played. I own both XBOX 360 and PS3, so I have played most all action and shooter genre games. I played this after Halo 3, Gears of War 1 & 2, and of course the COD Modern Warfare. The initial cut scenes have some great graphics, but the overall game play is pretty lame. Extremely linear... I played through about half the chapters then realized there wasn't much here to see. Aside from a very lame tank scene it was extremely repetitive, on par with some of the earlier Call of Duty series (COD 3). Expand

If you are debating about buying this game then dont cause it is worth every penny. The graphics are better then anything i have ever seen there are some parts in KZ2 that look better then crysis and pc fans said a console could never look better then crysis bull crap. The AI is really impressive so if you try to hide they will flush you out anyway they can. Now the friendly AI isnt as good as the enemy AI but it is still good. The story is pretty dang good also not better then MGS4 but it is good. The music what words can i say to describe the music other then the best in any video game to date if you dont have a surround sound system get one cause the music is amazing. Overall this game is epic and will be remembered for a very long time people will be comparing future games to this game. What are you waiting for quit reading and go get this game right NOW! Expand

The single player is good and well paced, but could have been better. The selling point for it is the excellent and extremely addictive multiplayer, offering up to 32 players online, it can be the most hectic online offering available on a console. Top that off with the prettiest console graphics this generation, and you've got a winer. For the most part, Guerilla made good on their promise from that old 2005 E3 trailer. Expand

This game is amazing, the sounds effects are incredible and the level of immersion is unmatched. Graphically, I've never seen anything like it on a console game. Gameplay takes a bit of getting used to, but once you've played an hour or so you realise it is top draw. This is a good game, don't let the haters tell you otherwise. Sure it doesn't reinvent the wheel and a couple times even feels like it lifted stuff directly from other games, but there's still something to be said for a game that does everything well. The controls and aim take a while to get used to but once you do, you will find Killzone 2 delivers an overall package that any FPS fan or PS3 owner can enjoy. This is the PS3's answer to the Halo and Gears of War franchises, giving the console a quality exclusive FPS to call its own. It's not a "killer" of those franchises or any other series, but it is definitely a rival. Expand

Killzone 2 sports amazing visuals & will be known as one of the best FPS's this gen. A 8 hour highly polished, simply outstanding single player game with a unique & successfully implemented First Person Cover System will keep the gameplay as fresh as it is, even though it suffers from "been there, done that" puzzle/shooting elements this is still one of the most brutal & unforgiving single player campaigns in years. It truly takes the status of 'War Perfected'. Also sporting an in-depth online stat & gameplay/squad system this is the next mainstream online experience for all the CoD muthas out there. Presentation-10/10 There's not much to say here. You just have to experience it for yourself. Graphics- 9.5/10 One of the most graphically & technologically impressive games ever. The best parts being Lighting & Animations. Audio 10/10 With an intense & rich orchestral score and the real sense of being put in this intensely immersing war zone the Audio is the best achievement of this game. Game Play 9/10 Tactile Expand

One of the best shooters I've ever played. Definitely deserves to be up there with other fps juggernauts such as Halo 3, Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare, Golden Eye 64, and Crysis. Pros : A solid single player campaign with an unforgettable ending. The voice acting in the single player campaign for most of the game is top notch. combine it with an intriguing story about the struggle between the ISA and the Helghast and you have yourself a winner. 32 player online matches with an actual clan system. Create a clan, recruit members, and battle other clans in scheduled tournaments for "Valor" points. Badges allow you to mix and match various abilites which are unlocked as you rank up. Feel like practicing a bit before going head to head with other gamers online? Bots are available for just that. Highly detailed environments with amazing lighting and excellent sound make the levels come alive. Cons : Corny dialogue. Some of the dialogue in the game just seems plain silly at times and will make you pretend you didn't hear that. Controls feel somewhat sluggish and will take some getting used to, but by no means do they break the game. Lack of Co-op. A lack of a cooperative mode was a slight disappointment, an already amazing single player campaign would've been a blast to play through with a friend or two online. Final verdict : Definitely a game any fan of the fps genre should get Sony's Playstation 3 for. Lack of Co-op aside, Killzone 2 has everything a first person shooter enthusiast would look for in a solid first person shooter. Expand

This game once agian has went over my expectations. Graphics are the best I have ever seen in an interactive genre. Story is very dramatic and movie like. The only draw back about this game is the controls that have been improved dramactically due to the patches and you are able to change them in the options. So controls are no problem anymore. This game propelled me forward with thunderous excitement from start to finish. It was a tremendous joy to play; epic in its scale, filled with intricate detail, and highly polished. Throughout the single-player campaign I destroyed bridges, felled hundreds of enemy soldiers, fought sometimes large and other times lightning fast bosses. While I’d heard that Killzone 2 would be slower and more methodical than the average shooter, I had more trouble getting myself to stop playing than making progress. The game was flexible in its approach to almost every situation. Sometimes I’d snipe enemies from afar, popping their helmets into the air; sometimes I’d rush an enemy and unload a barrage of close quarters fire. The controls were weighty, never allowing me to jump too quickly from target to target. At first I tried to increase the sensitivity of the joysticks, thinking I’d be able to swivel faster. Because the heft comes more at the end of a motion than throughout the motion, I found that increasing the sensitivity didn’t help. I ended up turning the sensitivity back down and simply got used to the experience, which actually felt really good after the initial unfamiliarity passed. It is the immersive nature of Killzone 2 that makes it really shine. I simply couldn’t seem to absorb enough of the detail at any one moment. Over time you feel like you are a part of the world and one with your movements within it. You can feel the grit in the air and the cold metal of your rifle. It was a wonderfully compelling experience that I can’t wait to replay. Expand

The best FPS game ever, with a great cover system which allows you to take cover behind anything, which you will have to do if you want to survive, to the very challenging Elite mode in single player. The graphics and surrounding are really good to look at (as long as you're not being ambushed by Helghast) since there is always something happening, whether it's something beign blown out of the sky, or a massive electrical storm. The only downfall I found from this was the lack of cut-scenes, most of it is all in-game speaking on what you're doing next then you're suddenly transported there. I wouldn't ask for cut-scenes like MSG4, but at least ones that lasted for a few minutes to keep the story flowing more smoothly. Expand

This game looks awesome! I would say it's up to par with Gears 1 and 2. But the gameplay could be worked on a bit. It feels like you are moving in slow motion. The whole aiming scheme is just horrible it feels like you can't hit anything. When you jump it doesn't even feel like you are jumping, or when you run it feels so slow and awkward. But the cheesiest feel is when you are hitting someone. It feels like you are hitting air. All in all this game is mediocre, even though I really wanted to love this game. This was the main reason why I bought a PS3. At least it's a good start for Guerilla they just need to polish it up! Good try boys, but not good enough. Expand

What can you say about a game that in all reality brings nothing new to the genre? You can say that it has perfected so many aspects of the typical FPS that it defies description, and that's not an easy feat! Did I say perfect? I think I did! Is it the same "save the world" type story? Sure. Still a FPS that tells you where to go next (take out that tank, go down that ladder)? You bet. Think about that Ford Mustang sitting next to a Ferrari, they both go fast, but one is clearly in a league of its own. And it's not just the campaign, online multiplayer is every bit as intoxicating. It's a shame that certain fanboys will knock this game and never take to the time to enjoy the best FPS we have seen so far. Expand

By sound and graphics alone this game deserves a 11/10 it is the best game to have ever graced a console to date. I care less about the story but the game play was very fun, specially the desert level with the bolt gun, best fun I've had since Goldeneye on the N64!. I LOVE the mech suit or Exo whatever it's called I hope to see it in multiplayer. The multiplayer just brought it over the top, the incessant changing of the game modes and chaos keep me wanting to play all night and unlock everything. Anyway, I'm glad I bought this game, I was waiting for something like this to showcase my 7.1 home theater and HD projector. But games are not all about graphics, some might say the controls are sluggish but I personally think they are perfect for a controller to get the right feeling of turning in the real world not as supermen turning at the speed of light as in most moused controlled PC games. The cover system is fantastic in single-player and although the gameplay is mainly cover-then-shoot then repeat the enemy's constant movement makes every situation fun to play thru time and time again. The multiplayer set-up is one of the best I've seen so far meeting up with friends in any game type is simple and quick the option of playing all game types in one round is brilliant as all skills are tested. There aren't many things i can say that are bad about this masterpiece except for 1.) The aiming system for the sniper rifle - using the six-axis is a bit corny and unnecessary as it just annoying not useful. 2).The damage that some enemies have to take is ridiculous, their humans not bugs off starship troopers ffs If you own a PS3 this game is a must!!! This game is the best looking FPS ive ever played or even seen. The only thing that doesn't make this title a bonified Halo killer is the lack of two player head to head. Come one, zero coop? For those who said the aiming was bad, no. It's just you suck at aiming. You may want to go into optionas and adjust your control settings...i cant wait for killzone 3.

Some people may find that the controls are "bad" but I think they feel like this due to the realistic game physics. You can actually feel the heavyness of your character unlike other FPS where you just feel like moving a camera around. For this game you have to get used to the controls first and then you will enjoy it at it's best The multiplayer mode is really entertaining. Players need to play tactically to achieve victory, the atmosphere is stunning. Players will feel like in a real war, good sound, good maps design, good servers, good gameplay. One of the best games for the PS3. Expand

This game really is the best FPS I have ever played. Its everything that an FPS SHOULD be, frantic, chaotic, intense, gory, and difficult. Starting with singleplayer, it is definitely the best FPS single player I have ever played. I cant say best single player, but its AMAZINGLY good for FPS. The enemy AI is superb, they will flush you out, flank you and cut you down. Its a real challenge. And they are such imposing tagerts too, red eyes, deathly voices and a unqestionable willingness to die for helghan and to take you down with them as they die. Its INTENSE. The story is actually great, if you read it on KZ.com, but its not expressed right in the game, leaving many to feel there is none, especially those who have not played KZ1. Online is where I think it shines. Frantic battles, chaos, grenades going off, ATACs shooting from above, turrerts from below, invisible snipers on your tail, saboteurs disguising themselves as your team, tactical insertion points..... its just amazing. Sure, the controls are a bit heavy, but give it a week. Once you get used to them, you wil love them. Turn up the sensitivity on the options will ease it up even better Any FPS fan should own this game Expand

Stunning visuals and enormous replay value (especially with the online multiplayer) are the biggest plusses that this ps3 exclusive has to offer. It lags noticably in the single-player story campaign and the controls can be quite cumbersome at first. But when it's all said and done the package is complete and hella satisfying. Don't pass on this one; arguably the ps3's finest exclusive title. -my score: 9 of 10 - Superior Expand

I waited for four long years and all I got was a mediocre first-person-shooter. This game looks brilliant, no doubts there, but in terms of story, gameplay, and controls... it just doesn't deliver like Call of Duty and other FPS. I bought a PS3 just for this game. It ended up being my first and last game I ever bought for such a fantastic system.

Outstanding game. Was one of the most amazing gaming experiences in my life. You were thrown into a world of chaos and misery. Blood shed left and right. You felt like you were in the sh!t. The AI was very impressive and would say has set the new standers for a single player experience.

This game was the biggest letdown of the year for me. I heard it was good the reviews mirrored that image but when i played i was anything but impressed. The game was horribly made. Your teamate is a waste of spac and never gets killed and only hinders your progress, For some reason you have a partner but you can't do co-op. The aiming is terrible and its too hard to hit people especially with the crappy sniper rifle. The worst part is the difficulty. Each guy is stronger than you. You die way too much. I've been playing FPS games all my life and i spent over 5 hours on 1 checkpoint in this game. I had it on "hard" difficulty which it said "is for skilled FPS players" and it was soo stupid and a waste of time. The graphics are good. Expand

This is a great game on paper, I mean it looks stunning. Unfortunately the gameplay is really sluggish and the controls have been ruined. They removed all secondary fire from the original, which means the weapon designs no longer make sense (one assault rifle still has the grenade launcher from the first game, but it is now inexplicably useless). Also, the cover system is terrible, totally unecessary in game like this- I can see what they tried to do, but it ends up being very awkward an unsatisfying trying to lean, scope and aim all at the same time... Beautiful game, disappointing gameplay. Hopefully Killzone 3 will address these issues. Expand

It is a great multi-player game. I think that network hit detection is one of the best I ever seen. If you go face to face with someone you and both of you shoot each other at the same time both will die. That just does not happen often in other games. I think that time to kill is about perfect. The game can be played in organized manner, but it is not forced onto the player. Good organized teams will have no problem dominating the map. Add to this a good set of well designed maps, several fun modes, ability of users to create your own custom online games, password protected games. You can play against AI bots and with AI bots and you can invite your friends to AI bot game as well. The single player story is fun. The end game fight is not fun and feels like a cheap way to make battle tough. If you read online on the final fight you will find that many people say the same about final fight. I have played major online shooter games: All of Call of Duty games starting with 4 (fun, but got worse with every release after CoD 4) Medal of Honor (crap) Resistance fall of Man (original). It is good, but it is not fun by now. Killzone 2 is by far my favorite online shooter game out of the listed above. Expand

The single player is well paced and action packed enough to enjoy despite the lack of a strong storyline. The multiplayer is incredibly addictive. It's a skill based FPS and one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. There is a tough learning curve that is very rewarding once you master the controls, weapons, maps, strategies and ultimately other players in the online multiplayer.

Killzone 2's campaign definitely could have used a stronger narrative, and the controls aren't as smooth as other shooters, but the campaign is a blast, the game is gorgeous, the multiplayer is engaging, and the overall presentation is phenomenal. If Killzone 3 can improve the narrative and mechanics to some degree, it will be the shooter to beat in 2011.

This is my first metacritic user review. I signed up just to praise this game really. It's my favourite PS3 game (at least right now), and it's my favourite shooter across all platforms. It's just an amazing game. I've been playing shooters since the early days of Doom and Quake. I was playing Quake arena back in 1997, on dial-up, and Killzone 2 has been the best shooter experience I've had since then. The single-player campaign is great, and I thought that the story was not as bad as some have made it out to be. In fact, I liked it. Sure, Rico can get a bit annoying sometimes, but I think overall he does add something to the game. The multiplayer, called "Warzone", is where this baby really shines. First of all the graphics on this game are the best I've seen on almost every game out there. They are just as good as Uncharted 2, in my opinion. You combine this with great gameplay, realistic controls, a great clan and squad system, good physics, and you have a stunning multiplayer that will keep you busy for hours and days to come. You won't want to put the controller down. It's just that good. And yes I've played all the Call of Duties, but Killzone 2 I think is overall a better multiplayer. Expand

very nicely done game. I found at the start i was slightly struggling with the sensitivity- finding it difficult to get it just right, but you do manage quite quickly to get the hang of it. If anything else its exteremly engaging, graphically stunning, the wepons give you a sense of alccomplishment when you kill your enemies, and the enemies in of themselves are talented fighters who are a force to be reckoned with through every part of the game. I'm not the biggest FPS shooter fan, but having played resistance 2, COD4, COD5, Rainbow 6 2 and others, this is without question my most favourite. COD4 meets Halo with a touch of the strategy found in raindbow 6 makes this a must play for those who want to see the playstation 3 live up to all its expectations. Xbox360 beware, you do have mighty impressive games such as GOW2 but, this is something to give it a run for its money (which is more...) wicked game. Good job. Expand

Highly polished and full of white-knuckle action, Killzone easily becomes what Halo 3 is for 360 and Crysis for PC, for PS3 - a benchmark. Graphics are out of this world, the sense of fighting against a ruthless enemy in a very hostile world is overwhelming, the atmosphere is dark and moody, and the AI is cunning . I was a big fan of Resistance 2 before Killzone 2 came out, but Killzone 2 easily tops it (and any other FPS on PS3) as the new king. This is the best FPS on Sony's system, period. Expand

For all the hype generated for this game, I was fairly disappointed in the game's controls which feel spongy. The controls are not as sharp as you'd expect from a top rated FPS. And why do games insist on "reinventing" control layouts. Why not stick to one layout for all FPSs (COD being familiar to most gamers) I purchased 50 Cent : Blood on the Sand the same day and have completed 50 Cent twice already while only finishing 3 levels in Killzone so far. KZ2 offers the best MP as well as the best SP experience. The online WARZONE is just a blast . The SP offers the most intense campaigns along with the hardest boss fights ever seen in a game. What a dissapointment. I really looked forward to this game. It would have been about a 7, but the controls SUCKED and ruined the game. It wasnt just that they were sluggish and its incredibly hard to aim (which are major flaws), but everything you do in the game, the controls felt off. Zooming in takes too long and when you hide the zoom automatically zooms back out, meaning everytime you peak out you have to re zoom which takes time. Zooming is different with every gun and when you aim while your zoomed in it moves way too slow. Other than Zooming being pointless, so is the damn hiding. They failed at the cover system miserably. When you take cover they still manage to shot you and the control when you take cover is astonishingly awful. Plus, when you throw a grenage it only goes like ten feet and it takes a couple seconds to throw it, meaning that you have to stand there and get shot at everytime you throw a grenade and if you turn around too quickly you end up throwing it somewhere else. As cool as the guns are you can only hold one at a time, other than your useless pistol. Why did they decide to do that? Who only wants one gun at a time? I know most people dont agree with me, but the graphics arent good. The levels are repetitive and boring looking. Nothing cool looking like in Gears 2 or Resistance 2. Just factories and hallways. The enemies are all exactly the same too. Not nearly as good as the Gears 2 enemies. The difficulty balance was also way off, and sometimes it would instantly get way harder. The only thing I thought was excellent in this game was the music. Get Gears 2 or Resistance 2 if you want a similar but SUPERIOR game. Hell, you cant even aim in this game and you will want to break your PS3 in frustration repeatedly. Expand

Does not live up to the hype! I was really, really looking forward to this game. The graphics are good and that's about all that stands out. Very slow aiming re-action time, 2 second pauses in gameplay every time the game loads, hardly any variation in the enemies and quite a dull story line. This game really shows off the power of the PS3. I'm always excited to see new games by Naughty Dog and Insomniac. I was skeptical about KZ2 being awesome but it totally exceeded my expectations. Guerilla Games have established themselves as one of the best developers. Gears 2 is as good as things are going to get on the 360. This game is epic. The visuals are, as expected, unmatched by any console game previously seen. The sounds are equally as good, immersing you in the gameplay and attributing to a fantastic all round experience. The storyline isn't as weak as some make out, I found it quite solid, but the multiplayer makes up for any flaws. The clan system is deep and, unlike CoD, has more meaning to it than just a clan tag. The gameplay is smooth and unique. I think it really works and feels incredibly satisfying. To top off this great game, GG offer brilliant customer support, releasing patches to fix problems immediately after they are identified. I hope that I can give everyone a non-fanboy perspective (I believe the 360 is the best gaming counsel). This game is awesome! I didn’t own a PS2 and have never seen the original Killzone so I had doubts that the game would live up to the high expectations but so far I am very impressed with the overall execution of this game. It sucked me in immediately and what I thought was a quick 15 minute gaming session actually turned out to be over an hour . . . that is a good thing when time flies by like that! It deserves the right to sit atop the pedestal of great shooters such as Half-Life, Halo, and COD4. My biggest gripe is actually not with the game, but with the PS3 dual shock which I’m having a little trouble adjusting to after being used to the 360 controller (I’m sure it won’t take long to adjust). If you have a PS3 and like shooters, this game is a must-buy. If you have been sitting on the fence about getting a PS3, then this will be a tasty carrot for Sony to dangle in front of you. If you have actually played the game and rate it less then an 8, then I feel sorry for you and the expectations that you probably have not only for gaming, but also for life in general. Expand

A great game. The controls take a hell of a lot to get used to, when I first started it felt like my gun was taking up over half of my screen and that I was swimming in tar. Those who are used to knee-jerk shooters are likely to dismiss it on first impressions, but after a period (and a lot of tweaking to the sensitivity) I was more than capable of holding my own. This quiet simply is the best mulitiplayer game i have ever played with amazing visuals and stunning audio(Surround sound turn right up) it's far better to any other game on the market at the moment. So many new ideas with all different classes which make it so differant to anything else i've played on the ps3 anyway. At first the online might seen difficult but if you put in the time you will be rewarded with month's of entertainment. Some people have moaned that the aiming is bad and it could have been better in places but this is mainly from jealous xbox owners who are gutted that it can never be made on there systems. Where people are whining and complaining about the done and done over concept of 'Point shoot, survive, rinse and repeat', it's the essential combination of any successful First Person Shooter (FPS) on the market. Every Call of Duty game with the exception of 4, along with every Medal of Honor game ever created, follows the same storyline; You are not a Nazi, it's your job to go kill Nazi's, go go go! There's never any variation; there's no way to really change what has already happened and call your game a "WW2 Sim". Now, what's wrong exactly with Killzone 2's storyline in similarity? Isn't this story EXACTLY the same thing? Country (in this case, another planet; Helghan) invades another country (also in this canse, another planet; Vekta), tries to take over because they were agitated / annoyed / pushed too the limit / feeling oppressed / find themselves inheritantly superior / the people they're invading are the 'real oppressors'. Invaded country holds off as long as possible before finally pushing invaders away. Invaded now become the invaders. New invaders do what they went to do, but get stomped in the process. Ladies and gents; this is a war game. If you don't like war, this isn't for you. This game is what all war games dream to be, just in year 4010. The gameplay is extremely immersive, the level design in singleplayer and multiplayer is not only intense, but never boring, and the animation / graphic / sound performance is unparalleled. Where in the Halo franchise, I felt like i was playing something akin to a cartoon with guns, with this I feel like I'm in the middle of a war. And I freaking love it. It's a top notch game with better multiplayer than I've ever been in. It's not gimped to the point of being an entirely new game - everything is exactly the same, except for the removal of cover-taking, which is a bonus to forwarding gameplay. Love this game, will likely play it for as long as the servers are up. Which I predict will be up until Killzone 3 is released. Expand

I am disappointed. For me Killzone 2 did not live up to the hype. It is not a bad game, but the single player campaign wasn't that impressive. The story is simple, the boss fight just tedious and nothing new. The graphics might be excellent, but I didn't notice with all the motion blur, screen shakes and clutter (smoke, blood, dirt, etc) obscuring the view. I felt that the controls are a bit sluggish compared to other games in the same genre. The multiplayer on the other hand is much more fun. If it wasn't for this solid multiplayer I would have given it a lower rating. It is a nice game but not that revolutionizing IMHO. Expand

Its not bad, but i cant get myself to like it. maybe its just not me, but the controls could seriously use more work. and the environments are all bland, gears of war was bland but its levels had quite some variety, which killzone lacks. ofcourse the multiplayer was the main reason to get it, but no further impulse is present to play it, the unlocks are really not worth playing through for such a long time. Fantastic visuals, but the gameplay and controls are a little bit sour. Could REALLY do with Splitscreen co-op play, and I mean REALLY. I mean Garza is following you around for the majority of the campaign, why can't the splitscreen player assume his role? Thats what most games do. Also after a while, it just isn't fun anymore. The inaccurate controls coupled with the heavy, sluggish feel of the game just makes it dull. Regardless, a good game, not great, but good. Expand

It baffles me how a game like Killzone 2 can be considered so great, the graphics are amazing, everything else is terrible. STORY: Pretty standard sci-fi story Space Marines kill bad guys, decent voice acting but can get corny at times. Annoyances abound when you figure out that apparently you're the ONLY Space Medic left so you're left to be the only person that can revive your teammate and when you die, your teammates cannot revive you, in single player, hearing "ZEV, I NEED HELP ZEEEEVVVVVV" gets old very quickly. CONTROLS: Mushy "realistic" controls which make the multiplayer in this game feel so terribly unbalanced and sluggish, I think this is actually supposed to be a "feature" but the acceleration on the sticks is insanely high, but the sensitivity is low leading to unecessary . coming from gaming on PC with mouse and keyboard using analog sticks with a ton of accelleration seems so frustratingly inaccurate it's a deal breaker right there. GRAPHICS: As I said earlier, the graphics are great, same with the sound design. Aesthetically it's a well made game, but control and story wise it's terribly disappointing. Expand

Killzone 2 is one of my favorite FPS games for two reasons. One of the most important reasons is that this game has very decent to exellent AI and they do not spawn at exactly the same place each time. Although not perfect the AI are capable of making intelligent decisions as a group and this allows one to also take different approaches and routes to take the enemy out. Especially on the highest setting this is very important to keep the game fresh and challenging. The second reason I love this game is the visuals - the smoke obsuring your view ect is unlike any other game and adds to the adrenaline rush of playing through it. Ironically this is also one small fault of this title. Despite awesome graphics there are lots of times the game very briefly pauses to catch up and although the catch up is minimal it does interfere with the immersion of the gameplay. Two other small faults hamper this game: your AI buddies do seem to get in your way quite often and some chapters start you off with really low powered weapons inappropriate for the situation. I find this quite annoying rather than immersive to the storyline. Apart from these small issues Killzone 2 is top in class. Apart from the FEAR series you will not be treated to such good AI that you actually feel you are taking on a real fantasy group of enemies with more than half a brain each which is typical of almost all other shooters. This game is not good the only thing good about it is the graphics the frame rate is not good and gameplay isn't good neither. And the multiplayer just isn't fun.

My first time playing a game in the Killzone series, and in my opinion it seems like the PlayStation 3's parody/rip-off of the Xbox 360's Gears of War series, from the focus strictly on action rather then plot, to the annoying overuse of the F word, the graphics are phenomenal managing to be better looking then a lot of games that come out now with only light areas showing age (I'm looking at you flamethrower fire trail), and the soundtrack is great, as is the sound of explosions and gunfire, but voice acting is passable at best, you can get used to the controls but I wouldn't really call them good but instead decent, the campaign is pretty good but mediocre compared to some other shooters, and is hindered by a lack of plot and unlikable characters, but like I said it's still pretty good, multiplayer is where it shines, all the issues with controls fade away, it's a blast and addicting and the reason you should pick this up, but with Killzone 3 out the multiplayer is slowly coming to an end, so in the end it's got some issues but it's still a good shooter that you can still have fun with, but there are better options available. Very unimpressed. I played this game for about 6 hours split over 2 different sessions, and absolutely can not stand the controls. I have quite a lot of experience in FPS's, and I would certainly rather play Golden Eye than this game. The controls are slow and unresponsive, the use of automatic weapons is a joke, and accuracy is of all weapons in general is like using a red rider BB gun as a sniper rifle. Over all, I would say that this game is not even worth getting used. Expand

I've always thought that graphics shouldn't define a gaming experience, however, with a title like Killzone 2 it's not hard to be persuaded for glitz over gameplay. Killzone 2 is one of those titles where the graphics and effects have a direct influence on the overall experience. The level of detail is absolutely amazing and when combined with the fairly competent shooting style and level design, it ends up being a thoroughly engaging and downright intense experience. Futuristic shooting has never been done so well and it's worth a play if only to ogle over the incredible visuals even if the story itself does sometimes reduce itself to laughable cliches and stock characters. Bought this game for $20, and the only thing I didn't like about it was getting my ass kicked on elite difficulty or online. The controls aren't for everyone, but they add a new and interesting approach to gunplay that involves using your head more than you use the fire button. Could have used a toggle crouch option for the otherwise perfect first person cover system, but other than that, I didn't have any problems with the controls. Some say that the game-play can be repetitive, but I strongly disagree. The game-play is dynamic in that your character is rendered in real time and the game will periodically switch to a third person perspective. Your character even emits his own shadow from multiple light sources which are also among the best lighting effects in the history of gaming. There are many different enemy types and each one can provide a tough challenge even on recruit difficulty. The impressive A.I. bounds from cover to cover and flanks you if given the opportunity. Any dissapointments killzone 1 had were fixed in this game. Possibly the best shooter sequel ever in terms of improvements in quality. In terms of graphics -well- what can I see about killzone 2's visuals that hasn't already been said. The visuals are simply phenomenal and the frame rests at a smooth 30fps while screen tearing is non-existent. The artful use of excellent cell-shading and textures are beautiful. Sadly, the game features no co-op but the campaign and multiplayer provide a great experience. The campaign stays true to the killzone storyline and does a good job of keeping the player interested. The Helghast have a more dramatic presence and the ending provides a nice cliff-hanger for a sequel. The story could have used more depth as we no relatively little about the Helghast and ISA motives for war but otherwise the plot is easy to follow and the voice acting is good. The multiplayer is similar to games like team fortress or battlefield as it focuses on classes. Good teamwork and diverse use of classes are the key to winning online. Dedicated servers improve the reliability of the game, and the maps are fun to play. All in all, Killzone 2 progresses the killzone series forward and is a worthy sequel. Expand

This game is massively over hyped. This game may be a graphical milestone for the ps3, but the plot is nil. The mechanics are clunky and not very fun at all. Multiplayer is pretty much exactly what you have been playing since halo 2. Nothing new or interesting here, a lot of rehashed, poorly executed ideas.

Graphics are the best ever and presentation is top notch, but main campaign is over in 6 hours. it was nice, but nothing really special, very cliched. The controls are sluggish and the multiplayer gets boring after a couple of days when you unlock everything. Only 8 maps and everybody are using the same tactics: spawn, enter a room, throw a missile and a grenade, kill 2-3 enemies, get killed and repeat. Rent before you buy, I traded my copy after 3 weeks. Last game that I will buy based on hype alone. Expand

Repetitive repetitive repetitive non stop repetitive redundant repetitive implausible repetitive pointless repetitive mundane repetitive action, that's really repetitive. Plus bad guys that don't die when you shoot them in the head. Instead they get woosy and lose their helmets, but with the helmets off, you can hit them in the head again, and this time severely wound them... But if you unload an entire clip in on their heads, they'll eventually die.. So remember, unload entire clip, take their gun and repeat. Expand

I liked Killzone 2 at first, but my initial feelings for it didn't last. The graphics are unquestionably up there with the likes of MGS4. No question, these graphics are mindblowing. Possibly better than Gears 2, but I need to see both games next to eachother to be sure. The gameplay is something you would expect from a shooter with as much hype as KZ2 got. It's intense. However, even with all of these good points I still can't help but be disappointed. The story is crap and the characters are worse. Most of the time you wont even care about what they are saying. The fact that only a fraction of people playing KZ2 would have played KZ1 (which was really awful) makes the story even more meaningless. The final boss is actually harder than the whole of single player, which I hate. The controls are shaky and a bit delayed at times, the aiming is inconsistent which will then become frustrating, it hampers the experience. You can get used to the controls with time but they need to be fixed. Multiplayer is pretty good but there aren't many levels to play in. Not to say that the levels are bad, but there are only 8 maps. The multiplayer can be a joyful experience, but again the controls sometimes ruin it, on FPS's I usually play on the highest sensitivity but with KZ2 the higher you increase the sensitivity the worse it gets. Overrated, but not as bad as some games have been. Now, is this game better than Call of Duty WaW and Halo? Maybe. Is it better than Call of Duty 4? No. Expand

1 point for the graphics which are while artistically abysmal, dull and brown with endless identical enemies (all with the same silhouette more or less) hiding away some quite technically impressive stuff, but that's it. The game just isn't fun. Online is a camp and 'nade fest, SP is a bad joke with underwheling AI and terrible controls and camera with one of the worst cover systems going. About on a par with resistance 2 as more dull slog than the sunday afternoon dishes. What makes this very sad is the amount of time and money wasted to make this title, and that so many "profesional" reviewers were taken in by the hype to not see past the marketing lingo to the dull slow game that lies at the heart of this. My god, i got a ps3 for this game and then look at it, im not a fanboy of any console but after that let down.... 360 is better this gen... Multiplayer is ok. A bit laggy.. Story is short ( good work there blu ray ) and the glitches are unbelievable, nearly as bad as Gears 2 ! I mean, come on, this game is way too over rated !

After playing many other FPS's I come away from this game with mixed feelings. The graphics are stunning for sure, but this is like putting shinny new rims on a Chevy Celebrity. The controls are terrible. The fire fights in multiplayer are based off of luck due to the fact that the aiming is sub par. I cannot stress enough that the controls are so bad, that playing Call of Duty (any of them) after playing this, I felt super human. I gave the game a 5 based off of the fact that the concept and graphics are great. If they got the controls down better in this game, it would have been a 10 for sure. You would have to wonder if any of the developers ever played an FPS prior to making this game. Expand

  1. It's true that Killzone 2 is filled with moments that can handily be described as inspiring awe. Each scene is incredibly well detailed, from the gaps in jerry-rigged cover points letting you sneak in a killing headshot to scarred and scratched textures, the planet feels entirely believable... Without a doubt Killzone fans, action and shooter fans of any stripe will instantly tag this sequel as a powerful contender for best game of 2009. [Feb 2009, p.38]
  2. Killzone 2's secret ingredient is the fluidity in gameplay that we have come to enjoy more than its graphical prowess or jaw-dropping visuals. And that's what games have always been about... We're surprised to see Killzone 2 blows our expectations out of the water with a memorable SP campaign and a stellar MP component. To put it short, this game makes "Gears of War 2" look like a high school attempt at gaming and that is a HUGE compliment!
  3. Visually it's so far ahead of anything else out there it shatters your expectations...This is a PS3 showing what it's truly capable of and delivering a landmark piece of explosive entertainment you can't afford to miss. [Feb 2009, p.88]
