  1. This could well be a surprise hit for those willing to invest the time. Despite a lack of polish, there's a relatively deep story for fans of mythology.
  2. What it will do, however, is allow you blast through ten or so hours of adrenaline-pumping scripted sequences with plenty of impressively rendered mythological beasties.
  3. Legendary is sure to be lost in the shuffle this holiday season, which is sad because it's actually pretty good.

There is a lot of hope buried under the surface and if they can manage to unleash it, the game could truly live up to its namesake.
  5. Legendary isn’t the most involved or technically excellent shooter to come out this season—Left 4 Dead and Gears Of War 2 outclass it. But it’s a fun change of pace with some extremely satisfying combats.
  6. Legendary is by no means awful — it’s just about as vanilla as first-person shooters get. It all wraps up with a completely unsatisfying “wait for the sequel” type cliffhanger. We’ll see.
  7. Legendary is by no means a legendary experience, but it's not a train wreck either. It's not worth the full $60 asking price, but it's a good rental for anyone who wants to punish some ancient myths or who's in need of a decent FPS to pass a few hours.
  8. Legendary’s problems would be easily forgivable if the rest of the package came together well enough but it doesn’t. With only four different enemies to fight for most of the game (one is a second breed of Werewolf), a mostly useless selection of guns and annoying bosses paired up with a story that doesn’t go anywhere the game fumbles its execution totally.
  9. Legendary is an acceptable, sometimes frustrating game, a simple entertainment until the great first-person shooters of the year are released.

It’s a shame the care and attention that Spark has given to the visuals and presentation is quickly squandered by some glaring gameplay errors.
  11. The undeniable charm of using automatic weaponry on magical monsters is just about enough to make it worth a look. [Christmas 2008, p.120]
  12. Mindless fun, and it's at its best when you don't pay too much mind to the incoherent story and limited gameplay. [Holiday 2008, p.88]
  13. I was severely disappointed with this title.
  14. It'd be probably work well for a rental, but much like a Sci-Fi Channel Original, Legendary isn't something you'd want to admit to having played.
  15. Legendary is an example of a title that could’ve been both exceptional and memorable, but ends up being neither due to a variety of major flaws in the glaring inconsistencies, unrefined technicals, and overall gameplay.
  16. Even if you have too much time and money, Legendary still isn't worth a purchase.
  17. There is inspiration underlying this game; it's just too bad the promising first thirty minutes wind up buried under hours and hours of mediocrity.
  18. There are just way too many better shooters available to make this game worth your time and money.
  19. The Minotaur says with his sad cow eyes glistening “Don’t worry guys, everything will be alright”, but the Minotaur knows it’s not going to be alright… it’s not going to be alright at all.
  20. While it's a better game than Turning Point, Spark still shows a lack of capacity to design a modern and competitive FPS. Slow controls, unfair difficulty, boring game mechanics and forgettable story make this title simply uninteresting, except for some moments of visual spectacle fighting colossal creatures.
  21. Merely a disappointing and lightweight FPS. [Christmas 2008, p.86]
  22. Just about everything about this title comes up short. Disappointedly short. All the makings of an interesting story and gameplay are here, but it’s as if the developers had a “it’s good enough” attitude.
  23. Absolutely terrible. It's simply broken. [Christmas 2008, p.92]
  24. Legendary could have been and should have been so much more; especially with it's awesome premise. Instead, we're stuck with a game that feels like it's more set-up for a sequel than as a standalone game.
  25. Constantly spawning enemies… Solid walls that light can leak through… A bad first-person shooter experience.
  26. All together, Legendary had a decent idea behind it that's been marred by some poor design decisions. Shooting and controls feel ok, but everything you shoot at, interact with, or run through is lackluster, broken, or just plain boring.
  27. Pandoras Box has truly been opened by Spark Unlimited. The graphics are sub-par, with immense slowdowns and juttering refresh rates. Also, the online community is nowhere to be found, rendering the multiplayer experience useless.
  28. All things told, the game reeks of derivation.
  29. Unreal III engine. Check. Monsters. Check. Guns. Check. Then why does it feel like a soggy chocolate biscuit?

By the time I'd defeated my 10th werewolf, I was already tired of needing to cut or shoot its head off so it didn't regenerate. By the time I defeated my 200th, I just wanted to turn the game off.
  31. 23
Unfortunately, the gameplay comes across as messy and incomplete, the arrangement of hazards and threats from monsters is ineffective at best and boring at worst. Plot points and development is practically nonexistent, and the standard shooter mechanics just fall flat.

The gameplay, story, and mechanics work well. You rate games on what they do and are, not on what, an arbitrary "you" think it should be. The graphics are pleasing and good. They really did a good job on creating atmosphere, to give the locales a sense of emotionality. The audio is satisfactory and surprisingly effective in places. There are some really good and charming moments in the game. I also like the labaratory where the player can have different monsters pitted against each other. That's a winning touch. This game deserves better than how people are dismissing it- probably insider stuff anyway. Well I'm here to say listen to an independent. Maybe Spark didn't have Resistance, Gears of War, or Fallout money, but they crafted a very good game in spite of it. They also thought of a more idependent and original idea than nuclear fallout, or aliens of some sort. My son and I both like the game and to get the sense of what we ususally like in shooters I play F.E.A.R. and Far Cry 2, and he likes R6V2, COD4, and Far Cry 2 online. "We want to stay away from using super "powers" as another form of a "gun." - Spark Unlimited.

"I totally agree and promote that design philosohy." - Lam L.

This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. Even when Legendary had some pretty bad reviews, I decided to give it a try since it was available for a cheap price. I must say that I was positively suprised by the game. It had some issues, like with the cutscenes lagging a bit at the beginning, but overally it was a decent game. It might have been a bit too difficult for these modern casual gamers with its small "puzzles" as there was no guides. In the warehouse with the first werewolves, I tried using boxes to get to the upper level and it didn't work. Got fustraded and shot a barrer which I then noticed to cause the platform go higher with the other getting down. That is what a game needs. Few puzzles that will make you mad and, after finishing, jump in joy. Anyway, Legendary might not be the best game out there, but definitely worth atleast one playthrough. Full Review »

All I can say after I beheaded my first werewolf after what seemed like 50 hacks at his neck with a FIRE AXE, only to be finished by another werewolf, this game was dead to me. Slow movements, a not so easy "easy difficulty setting", and now that ive played it, boring story, this game gets a giant goose egg from me. Full Review »
