Mega Man 9 is exactly what hardcore gamers were hoping it would be, as Capcom has come out of the gate with a game that's full of nostalgia and fan-service, but also one that truly does rival the best in the franchise's 8-bit roots.
  2. The original blue bomber returns in an all new adventure that will bring you back to the good old days of incredibly hard but simple games.
  3. This is a full-sized 8-bit title, complete with a time trial mode. Playing through the story once can take between six to eight hours, but you could easily spend twice this amount of time with the game and still be having fun.
  4. It is as true as possible to the franchise's humble beginnings, which is a good and bad thing. In my opinion, it's a good thing because I love a game that can put me through the wringer and back-but still be fair about it.
  5. Really, though, there’s nothing wrong with the game itself, and it will appeal greatly to the legions of longtime fans. The franchise has always been difficult, and dying a lot has always been a part of getting through the games. Yet ultimately, Mega Man 9 is so difficult that it gives newcomers very little reason to pick it up.

MM9 is an unapologetic nod to one of gaming's greatest eras. It might've been made especially for nostalgia-crazed dorks like me, but it's something that any challenge-seeking gamer can dig.
  7. This is bound to find a hardcore following, but it's frustratingly tough. [Dec 2008, p.84]
  8. Buy it, finish it, love it, because if this takes off we’re going to see a renaissance of new-old games. And if that happens, a whole new batch of gamers will grow up learning why rock-solid gameplay, not tera-flipping flop-bib shaders, make games truly exceptional.
  9. I can't imagine any casual gamers getting much out of Mega Man 9. It requires and tests a skill set that you only tend to have these days if you've been playing games for the last twenty years.
  10. Mega Man 9 might try to fit in the ‘retro cool’ category, but really it’s just retro: and that’s much less of a safe bet than Space Invaders T-shirts and Pac-Man keyrings. [Dec 2008, p.94]
  11. The vibrant, retro look reinforces the game's charm even further.

Mega Man 9 is more than just an experiment in aesthetics or retro fan service - it's the real deal. Tough as nails, rewarding, and endlessly playable. Essential for anyone with the requisite skill or determination.
  13. The pixel-like graphics and outdated gameplay lets you think that you are dealing with a very old videogame. But you couldn't be more wrong. Mega Man 9 is not a fresh and new adventure in the Mega Man franchise. Nevertheless, Mega Man 9 is already a classic that shows that a 2D game can still pack a lot of punch.
  14. Great stuff for masochists who think progress ended with 8-bit gaming - not so much if you're looking to have fun. [Dec 2008, p.121]
  15. If you liked the old Mega Man games then you probably already bought this, but if not do it immediately, and if you have never played one before, it’s a good time to start.

Its gameplay is undeniably pure. [Issue#172, p.92]
  17. Bringing the Blue Bomber out of his 12 year retirement proves to be a great move. This game will have old school gamers remembering the "good ol’ days". A definite must-have for 2D platformer fans, who are up for a challenge.
  18. It's damn near impossible, but you'll feel a great sense of accomplishment if you manage to beat the final boss. The replay value is high, thanks to additional challenge and time attack stages, along with promising downloadable content.
  19. Mega Man 9 is an extraordinary accomplishment through and through and has come at the right time.
  20. If you can survive the near-vertical difficulty curve, Mega Man 9 is an entertaining blast from the past. [Dec 2008, p.86]
  21. The game encapsulates everything that made the franchise great in the late 80s and early 90s and recycles it for the current generation. Mega Man 9 is a worthy addition to any gamer's digital library.
  22. Speaking of unlockables, I would also like to have being given the chance of getting to mention the likes Time Attack, which is supported by online leaderboards, and Endless Attack, which is probably the most hard-hitting survival mode ever included in a game in the history of time, tasking players with getting by as many screen as possible before unmercifully dying.
  23. All this said Mega Man 9 has a lot going for it. It isn’t terrifically expensive but you can have hours of fun with it, trying to master the stages and the Robot Masters.
  24. Experimenting with Black Hole Bombs and other special weapons is great fun in Mega Man 9, a welcome departure from recent entries in the series, where an enhanced Mega Buster made other weaponry less relevant.
  25. Mega Man 9 is a great game with a huge amount of old-school appeal. Unfortunately, it is unlikely to resonate with everyone, primarily due to its excruciating difficulty.
  26. A title to please fans, retrogamers and players in search of a real challenge, but most new generation gamers will find it difficult to bond with this game.
  27. It's an amazing feeling to be able to play MegaMan again. The story, the music and the courses all live up to the myth, but why does it have to be so hard?

It was great that mega man returned old school but that doesn't give it an excuse that the story had to be so dull and repetitive. The musicIt was great that mega man returned old school but that doesn't give it an excuse that the story had to be so dull and repetitive. The music and the stages were great but there was limited game options. It wasted 4 hours of my life and I haven't even finished it yet. I would've gave it 7 if it came with the warning: THIS GAME CAN BE EXTREMELY BORING! YOU CAN ONLY PLAY THIS GAME IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A LIFE! Full Review »
