Really lives up to the metal gear series, loads of serious fun to be had here and not just for the online enthusiast either. With the addition of the expansion packs and the all new reward system to earn yourself some nice camo'd gear etc and possible more to come, it's a real worthwhile game to play, even if the sign up process is tedius..

the game was good... until i kept on getting disconnected from the network and eventually i couldn't even get to the online menu. then everytime i picked MGO from the game menu my gam ended an i ended back on the PS menu. game is good but too long on getting it started and it has too many errors and glitchs.

This is almost like a demo of the completed version that Konami either plans to dish out with DLC over the PSN, or in a full disc version. Either way it is like purchasing a possible game of the year is MGS4 and getting a game for free. This is not supposed to be played like COD4, I think it provides a great contrast and is just a taste of what is to come.

Mgs4 single player was a success, but online is average, it's slow paced, and there are not many options. you should be able to create classes and there needs to be more guns and maps.more game modes would be great too.avoid this game till it has improved and buy battlefield bad company.

Does not quit match the single player part of MGS, but it still has fairly deep gameplay mechanics.

The game itself is probably the best video game I've ever had the pleasure of playing, but the online action is lacking. The drebin points system in online play is a little annoying. You should be able to keep points at the very least so that you could "unlock" other weapons such as in Call of Duty 4 online. It would also be nice to view player stats in the lobby. Friend invites should be made easier as well. Overall I give it a 7. Expand

Today we have multiplayer games like CoD4 wich are superb. Then came this, what a dissapointment. MGS4 itself is a great game which deserves all the top rating it have, but this. No. Controls are poor, graphics are boring as are the maps too. And they try to sell this game separetely somewhere. Who would pay for this when you can choose something like CoD4?

When you first get to the screen, the game asks you to register a Game ID and Konami ID. After much nail biting and head banging, that was done and I was ready to roll… except I needed to create a character. A simple, but deep, setup gives you enough customization of the character itself, while still being able to fit in with the aesthetic of the game. Setting up a match and joining is very easy, and the support for clans is nice addition to the game, although you’ll have to earn it first. So with everything sorted (I think), it’s off to one of the 5 maps offered in the starter pack. A war-torn area, with a lot of shelled out houses and nice touches like cardboard boxes (If you’re a Metal Gear Solid fan, you’ll appreciate them), the environments will be familiar to anyone whose played a war game. The graphics hold up very well, just like the Metal Gear Solid 4 does and, online, the game runs superbly, with no slowdown at all, a problem with other Konami titles like Pro Evolution Soccer. If you’ve mastered the single player game, than you’ll be fine online, with the controls being exactly the same, which benefit people new to the series. But those impressions last for 5 seconds. The first thing you hear is the screams of an online buddy being mowed down. If you decide to run into the open, get ready for a lead filled death, as although the game has a pedantic pace (more on that later), you need to have your wits about you. Indeed, normally the best players are the ones you don’t see until they’ve put you six feet under. The game modes are your average fare of Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture The Flag and, the most fun, sneaking mission. Sneaking mission sees you take the role of Snake, the Metal Gear Mk2, or the other players vying for points and trying not to meet Snake. Snake has to knock the guards out and steal their dog tags, but he has a suit that can adapt to his environment, making him almost invisible. The Metal Gear MK2 IS invisible, and, get on the wrong side of it, can electrocute you. Not the normal recipe for fun, but fun it most certainly is. There are problems though. The games huge areas are brilliant for big team battles, but when there’s only 4 or 5, there’s very little action and too much twiddling your thumbs waiting for Johnny the Fool to wander into your sight. The biggest bone of contention for more trigger-happy players will be the slow pace. There’s a reason that the series tagline is ‘Tactical Espionage Action’ and it shows. You’ll need every inch of cover and every drop of patience to eek out the game’s pleasures, but if you manage it, there are very few games online that match it. With some more content to be downloaded later in the year, the time for warfare is just getting started. Expand

Great game, this is the first game I've played online on consoles since Ghost Recon on Xbox live. The slower pace is much more enjoyable and reminds me of GR where you need to plan your attack and defense. This is not a spray and pray, run around deathmatch game like the "meh" console CoD4 and UT3 (PC versions are amazing). Overall this is a very enjoyable free package although the registration for this game was ridiculous. Looking forward to more content! Expand

Just about the only shooter with a stealth element on the market. Metal Gear Online is a terrific mix of a third-person shooter with tactical, teamwork oriented elements. MGO makes MGS4 one of the highest replay value games to date. Fun, exciting, tactical all with the outstanding graphics, audio and navigation menus of MGS4.

Not bad -- stealth is unfortunately very pared down. Maybe it's just because I'm not very good. Fun diversion.

I don't see why this is getting high ratings. First of all, it's incredibly slow paced. You move around like you're walking. It's hard to aim and the recoil on the guns is too high (making it even harder to aim). The user interface looks like a Nintendo game. The form you sign at the beginning is annoying (why do I need 2 usernames and passwords?). You can't change the look of your character after you've created it. You can't play as a female. The skills take FOREVER to level up and there are only 3 levels for each. When you die, there's no replay of how you died. It just shows what your killer is doing now. It takes like 5 full seconds to kill someone from body shots but a single bullet to kill someone with a head shot. I can go on and on, but this is the most important detail: The game is amazingly nonaddictive and unrewarding. I have literally played free flash games that kept my interest longer than this. Expand

Metal Gear Solid is a great series and the online is good but can be improved, also some people says it is a slow pace game well i think they are incorrect because this game for action more than a shooter which in COD 6 (MW2) you can die in seconds just when you spawn because that is a war game but this game is more like action which you don't get killed when you spawn.

Before it was tortured by MAO and little **** that cant play without a switch this was a great online game....... a 9 easy. Now though. Its full of cheats and lag switchers lol i was a level B player and i struggle to get C+ and keep it. If your not level 16 plus you dont stand a chance... not that half the players aquired their grade A- to BB without a switch now days..... so its a 9 without lag and a 4 with it. so my score is Expand

I'm the guy who has clocked 1000+ hours on this game, played Survival and Tournament mode every day, and practiced box-popping and instant headshots for hours. If you are new to this game, the newbie lobby can be fun. But prepare to be crushed once you're level 6. The community is mostly elites nowadays, and trust me, most are horrible kids and/or glitchers. But MGO itself is so good. The skill-system, rewards, character customization, controls (though they take some getting used to) are great. The way you can run your clan is very well done, most games don't include a special clan room or page (I'm looking at you, CoD, where you can only add a 'clan tag', LOL). Team Sneaking is the best mode in ANY game, EVER. The specials characters and their own skill sets are awesome. Survival and Tournament will keep you playing for hours. Metal Gear Online is the best online game I have ever played. I highly recommend you try it out. The community is **** but the game is GREAT. Expand

  1. A brilliant game youi get for free with "MGS4." What's to complain about? [July 2008, p.64]
  2. The slower pace might frustrate those used to COD4's adrenaline-soaked battles or Warhawk's arcadey clashes, but it's still a thrill. As a Metal Gear game it works beautifully, capturing the series' essence perfectly. [July 2008, p.108]
  3. If, however, Konami plans to turn this into an ongoing spin-off with commercial potential then it needs serious work to either shape it into something outlandish that could only be done online with the Metal Gear series, or to better blend the Metal Gear elements into the established tropes of the multiplayer action genre.
