  • Summary: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots features an aging and exhausted Solid Snake in the middle of a futuristic battlefield. In spite of his failing body, Snake is equipped with a crucial new device tentatively known as "OctoCamo," a high-tech suit that dynamically transforms its texture based on Snake's surroundings. This revolutionary new gameplay mechanic allows him to seamlessly blend into the environment, providing him with the means to stalk his enemies like never before. This latest chapter in Hideo Kojima's legendary tactical espionage actin series marks the return of several characters from previous Metal Gear Solid games including Revolver Ocelot, Meryl Silverburgh, Naomi Hunter and Raiden, and features an unforgettable story that depicts the desperate state of the future as seen through the eyes of an older Solid Snake. It's stupid, it's nonsensical, it's over the top, it's full of awful dialogue, it demands long sittings and it hasn't changed much from the first game ten years ago. But then, it's Metal Gear Solid, so who cares? It's undeniably brilliant, captivating, exciting and downright fantastic, definitely worthy of at least a few furrowed brows throughout the experience.
  2. As the crowning achievement of the series' 20-year history, Hideo Kojima's final Metal Gear Solid title may not be what you expect, but it is everything you could hope for in a video game.
  3. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will surely set the bar for this generations in terms of quality, and should be the benchmark for a truly great game.
  4. It should go without saying that this is a game anyone who owns a PS3 should buy, and it's probably no real stretch to say that people should buy a PS3 for this game alone. It's that good.
  5. A unique, multi-layered experience that, when all is said and done, is a worthy conclusion to an important series. In addition to coming through as a sequel, the game stands as a ringing endorsement for the technical capabilities of the PlayStation 3. Some elements of the game aren’t as progressive as its technology, but taken as whole it’s still one of the most remarkable games of this generation.
  6. Metal Gear Solid 4 is essentially the best game out there on the PS3, and can easily compete with any other game on any system.
  7. When placed in the context of the Metal Gears before it, Snake’s latest and last adventure feels a touch diminutive and hollow.

This is is masterful. The plot and character development are deep and the gameplay is extremely rewarding. I can understand that someone who doesn't enjoy the espionage/combat mixture might not get much out of the game, or someone who doesn't want to follow the twisting plot might get tired. This is a mature game in many ways, an intellectual game with a lot to say. But it's also very strange and downright silly at times. Expand

I am not allow to spoil anything and that was the deal for getting an early copy of MGS4 but guys this game is worth even the $85+ for the collectors edition.

it has all you need in a game full of action and espionage.
that 90 minute scene crap is all nothing but flamebait.

If you are an early MGS fan you wont be disappointed

This game is the best game i think i have ever played, that includes the legendary LOZ ocarina of time. I truly have no idea how GTA IV got a higher score than this masterpiece. Expand

I just finished MGS4 for the first time and at first I was skeptical. I thought that a game made in 2008 would not be able to match the quality of 2012 games. Oh how I was wrong about that! Metal Gear Solid 4 is now one of my favorite games of all time.

It's important to note that this game focuses heavily on story. In fact, you'll spend most of your time looking at cutscenes, some 30 minutes long or more. As a movie-lover, I have no objection to this. The quality of the cinematics, story and voice acting were enough to keep me interested all the way through to the end. Character design is fantastic and I can't help but liking every single person, even the bad guys. Fans of the previous games in the series would also be glad to see the references made to those classics. Hands down, Metal Gear Solid 4 has the best story in any game to date. Gameplay wise, MGS4 falls short of the quality of it's cutscenes. I could describe MGS4 as a movie first and a game second. The gameplay feels like filler segments between the cutscenes. An Act starts off with a 20 - 30 minute cutscene, you play for about the same time, then watch another half hour cutscene. But like I said before, I have no objection to this. I like the story driven nature of the game. If there is one thing Metal Gear Solid does differently in the gameplay category is that it isn't about combat as much as it is about stealth. I guess that's why they call it 'Tactical Espionage Action'. I'm more of a run and gun type of gamer, but that kind of thing gets you killed in this game. But it's a nice change from games I normally play. One downside for some gamers would be the lack of trophies. I think that trophies add a lot of replay value to a game and unfortunately they are missing here. However this does not take away from the experience. I played through without caring for trophies at all. I am glad that I decided to play Metal Gear Solid 4 and even today it is still one of the best games ever made. Fans of the Metal Gear series would not be disappointed. I think this is the only game I have played from beginning to end without raging a single time, despite all the deaths. I would definitely recommend it for any PS3 gamer. 5/5

MGS4 is a necessity in every mans life. The greatest game I have ever played. Hideo is a legend. This game WILL move you. I promise. Story is brilliant. Word of warning! Make sure you have a box of Kleenex tissues next to you because your eyes will start to rain. It's that good. Expand

So many people have said its a bad game, i would have to disagree. The main point of complaint was how there were 8 hours of cutscenes (which is actualy how many there are) when realy 6 hours grips you by the balls and keeps you interested while 2 do actualy bore you. Gameplay flows nicely and works well, and the array of weapons that you get to use is amazing. Also many people said that they were going through it like nothing and how there was no more stealth unlike the other games, when that happens put it on a harder difficulty and then we will see how run and gun it is! Most people should buy this game and everyone should atleast play once. Also everyone who says that 8 hours of cutscenes is a waste, they were trying to draw you more into the game with it, if you dont like it skip it easy as 1,2,3. Expand
