    Operation Flashpoint: Red River manages to establish the franchise between the traditional adrenaline-based Call of Duties and the simulation-based gameplay from the Armed Assault series. It´s at its best as a co-op tactical shooter, and could have gained even more ground on its rivals with better visuals, a slightly improved AI and more variation in the level design.

    Codemasters tries to bring its Operation Flashpoint series into different territory by giving Red River a cinematic feel and accelerated gameplay mechanics that its predecessors didn't have. It doesn't fail completely as this new entry is serviceable enough for those who never got around to playing a single entry in the franchise. As for the hardcore fans, well, they are experienced enough to get accustomed to things, but that doesn't mean they'll be happy about it.

    Operation Flashpoint: Red River doesn't play well on its own due to its bad AI. The online mode does offer a good experience, but isn't especially unique or amazing. The addition of a splitscreen-mode could've changed that, but Codemasters chose not to include such a thing.

    There are certainly better FPS games out there, but worth a try just to satiate your curiosity.

    Weak graphics and other smaller issues holds it back from greatness, but Red River is a solid war simulator with excellent atmosphere. Fans of tactical shooters should find plenty to like.

    Operation Flashpoint: Red River lacks polish, refinement, and optimisation. The addition of a discernible narrative structure also fails to impress. Nonetheless, gamers looking for something different in an FPS and fans of military realism might find themselves a very rough diamond here.

    Red River is a big step back from its predecessor, delivering less content (vehicles are almost gone) and a lame AI, which spoils most of the single player fun. On the other hand, online coop is well developer, and it makes the experience more enjoyable. If you are a fan of the brand, consider buying only if you have four friends to play online with.

    Its tactical approach makes Operation Flashpoint: Red River to a formidable fighter, if it weren't for the under-average graphics, long loading times and sequences you can't skip.

    As the "thinking man's" action FPS, the AI and presentation fail it. I will commend Codemaster's for trying to mesh aspects of more tactical shooters with easier "pick up and play" accessible gameplay. But some points of this title just can't be ignored, like terrible friendly AI and basic animation omissions. The experience is much better online when you no longer have to babysit your CPU controlled teammates. And although the Fireteam Engagements can be really fun, it's hard to suggest buying this game at $60 to play four "side missions."

    Red River may not appeal to everyone – our sense is that it's too hardcore for the console crowd and doesn't have enough of a unique identity for the PC crowd – but that shouldn't dissuade fans of the series or of modern-warfare shooters from taking a playthrough.

    Operation Flashpoint's efforts to deliver a tactical-based FPS experience are admirable. Unfortunately, the poor AI prevents the game from succeeding, leaving the cooperative multiplayer as its one saving grace.

    Weak graphics, bad AI and a non-spectacular presentation will keep you upset about the game. There are a lot of bugs in Operation Flashpoint Red River.

    It is frequently nail-biting but falls short of being consistently engrossing, but Codemasters have stayed true to their ethos of simulation – at the cost of spectacle – which is worth examining if you tire of being an one man army.

    Still, Red River is so far removed from what we currently associate with the FPS genre that. despite changing very little from Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, it's a revitalizing reminder of the originality these games can offer. [June 2011, p.74]

    Some poor design choices and a sometimes awful A.I., truly destroy what could have been a great tactical shooter. Thank God for that interesting co-op mode.

    The co-op is excellent from time to time, but the A.I. is too daft, and there's no balance in the confrontationss.

    Codemasters would be best served choosing to make their games either realistic or fun, and stop trying to find a balance between the two. Right now we are left with a game that alternates between frustrating and boring, but one that is never enjoyable.

    If you are into shooters, then there are definitely better titles than this one. Operation Flashpoint: Red River suffers from slow pacing and too much time not even taking part in firefights. It deals more with having you playing Nurse Nightingale healing yourself and your team than a death-dealing marine. If that sounds like your idea of a good time, then go nuts.

    The idea of an open-ended, multi-squad, strategic, cooperative shooter is incredible, and during those short bursts when Red River comes together-especially when playing with friends-there are few games like it. But there are so many issues, both large and small, that you'll have to overlook a lot of flaws in order to enjoy it.

    For everything that Red River succeeds in, it completely fails at something else. This stupid AI and this many bugs are just not ok.

    The senarios you get put into during singleplayer are amazing and the high point of the experience. During my play time I really felt as if IThe senarios you get put into during singleplayer are amazing and the high point of the experience. During my play time I really felt as if I was part of something bigger, almost like I was actually fighting with other soldiers in a war and not rambo taking on the world like any other fps game. missions are a high point as they are very realistic. One time you could be escorting a IED team and the next being flown into a battlezone to provide cover for wounded teammates to be extracted. Now here comes the bad part and why the game is getting a 5 in my eyes. The graphics are average at best and enemies are usually just a pixel on your screen at a distance. During some missions the frame rate will drop very low making combat frustrating at times. Your computer AI is for the most part worthless unless you tell them what to do at all times. The enemy AI is just laughable as the tactics the execute are nonexistant, they will just run out in the open and let you shoot them. Online can be laggy depending the host you get. Also the cursing in this game is absurd every other sentance has a cuss word or a vulgar referance it just gets old and annoying. To summarize it all up this game had so much more potential. The ability to cammand and give orders to your fireteam consisting of you and the 3 other soldiers is good, but the terrrible AI often leads your men to taking up defensive positions on the wrong side of wall, or defending one side of the building whilst the enemy is attacking on the other. Th enemy is also poor in this sense as well and will rarely take cover when assaulting your positions and will instead stop running in the middle of an open field and stand there shooting at you. Codemasters has tried making up for the lack of quality enemies with quantity by sending hundreds of PLA soldiers at your measly squad of 13 which for some reason always seems to be tasked with capturing the most important objectives in the war with little support. The highlight however of the game is your squad leader Staff Sgt Knox, this characters brilliant voice acting draws you into the game and adds a real authenticity to it, and makes you actually feel apart of something.
