  • Summary: The coin-op classics, R-Type and R-Type II, are together at last in R-Type Dimensions. Fight through all 14 Bydo-infested stages in original 2-D or all-new 3-D graphics, and swap back and forth on-the-fly. The classic gameplay remains untouched, and a new Infinite game mode allows continuous progression from game start to the final boss. The Bydo will not evade you this time. Game modes can be played as single player or multiplayer missions, either locally or over Xbox LIVE. Pull yourself together, save the Earth, and strike down the evil Bydo Empire. Expand

If you have any fondness for the series, or if you're just looking for a solid side-scrolling shooter that's about as hard as can be, R-Type Dimensions faithfully re-creates the original experience and before long you'll be wondering why you did this to yourself.

If you enjoyed the remix of Pac-Man and the re-release of all the Capcom Arcade games out there, then you’re going to love what IREM and Tozai Games did with R-Type Dimensions. Sure it’s going to be tough as freaking nails, but that’s how arcade games were during the arcade era — and you’re going to love every moment of it.

How much you will enjoy R-type will, rather like the game, depend on your age. If you grew up with shooters like Gradius and Xenon II then this is an almost essential purchase. However this is a relic of a bygone age and I don’t think younger gamers will enjoy the R-Type Dimensions half as much.

Shooters do not offer the type of storyline depth, character customisation or lengthy gameplay we have become accustomed to in today's video games, but R-Type Dimensions proves that there is still a place for the genre if it is handled the right way. R-Type Dimensions has been handled in just that fashion, providing fun bursts of action with enough modes and variety to make the entire package worthwhile.

Its cool that R-Type and R-Type II includes both the original versions and an enhanced graphics/music version- all of which can be switched on the fly with one button press. I was hoping that some more extras would be included given its 5 year release after the Xbox 360 version. However, pricing it cheaper at $10 makes up for it. In addtion- the PS3's excellent d-pad makes this game feel right at home. Expand
