If you hated resident evil 4, you probably won't find much to like here. If you haven't played resident evil 4....I suggest you play it and then decide whether to upgrade to the next iteration. I fortunately (in this case), got a ps3 late in the game. Because of this I was able to pickup Resident evil 5 edition for 20$ cdn/us and Resident Evil 6 (it was on sale) for the same price at the same time! I kinda go hand in hand in comparing the two since I literally played RE5 to death and then reluctantly moved on to 6 when basically everything except the online trophy component had been done. Then I played 6 to death and have actually moved back to playing mercenaries on it after a break. Anyways back to RE5... This game has ALOT of content in it. I would probably be relatively bitter if I had picked up RE5 full priced when it was first released and dished out half of that price again for all the dlc. But for people like me, who missed out when it was first released....this is an absolute gem of a game. A must buy for anyone who can appreciate it. If you are looking for horror kind of elements they are there.....but this is an action title like RE4. You might jump once or twice, but probably not. It's RE4 with a totally new and noteworthy storyline.....some of the best HD graphics you will see in a ps3/xbox360 console game...and alot of love for fans of the series and newcomers alike.… Expand

But who wants to play 10 games in a series that are pretty much identical? The gameplay is smooth and the graphics are amazing. The texture to dirty brick walls, muddy water, wooden floors, and you can even see the fabric of the costumes. I have beat this game 5 times and. I still have a few more things to do before I achieve my Platinum. And I haven't even mentioned how addictive The Mercenaries can be. Versus mode may not be for everybody but it just adds to the replayability factor. The game keeps you working feverishly to unlock that next awesome item or character. The Lost in Nightmares and Desperate Escape are really fun to explore. The mansion in HD? Nice.....I love this game.… Expand

I will break games, complain about the littlest detail, and tell you whether or not the game is worth buying. A lot of things to say here, but can't due to the 5000 character limit.
First, I'd like to say that if you're a first-time player, play offline. Don't play co-op without an actual friend. The community is now plagued with hackers, trolls, and gamers who will attempt to skip any cut-scene on you or else threaten to rage quit. They will also hog all of the items and ammo for themselves. Playing offline allows you to adapt to the physics and gain an understanding to how the main gameplay is, until you are comfortable enough to see the "real world" for what it is. More story skits also take place offline.
The story takes place in 2009, where B.S.A.A. member, Chris Redfield is dispatched to Kijuju, Africa to apprehend a black market weapons dealer named Ricardo Irving. Due to the distrust Africans have towards Americans in the story, Sheva Alomar is also assigned to assist Chris on his mission. But as they prepare, they notice something isn't right. And when things go quiet, all hell breaks loose shortly after.
The best part about the story is that it's introduced in a way where you don't feel left out for missing the previous games. Veteran characters like Chris Redfield are back, so it appeals to both new fans and old fans. But... There are a few flaws in the story to point out: first of all, the B.S.A.A. members have radio headsets with them, including the main broadcast from HQ, yet they'll sometimes act as if they don't have any contact with each other at all. Another flaw you'll notice is the lack of police/military protocol "Hands in the air, NOW!" type of deal. Can't explain more because this review isn't marked with spoilers, but if you're intelligent enough you'll figure it out. Finally, Chris should have died so many times... in just the story! Count it as you're playing through! Despite this; the story does manage to deliver a satisfying ending that most fans can agree with.
2. Voice Acting
Capcom follows the role of "If you're gonna play your part, you better do it right!" kind of deal. Always keeping the cast fresh, shedding new light on the Resident Evil universe.
3. Graphics and Visuals
The graphics are superb in every way & form. Not much else to say.
Gameplay refers to combat, customization, and various areas you can explore within the game. Put it all together and it's Awesome!
This game is co-op focussed. What makes Resident Evil 5 unique for strategy is that ammo picked up is only given to one player rather than both. So if you pick up your partner's shotgun ammo they desperately need you'll have to give it to them manually. Of course this means nothing once you unlock infinite ammo.
Resident Evil 5 has a small bit of an rpg elements here, painting experience points with gold, and distributing them in order to buy or upgrade weapons. The great thing about this game is that you can upgrade any weapon you want in any fashion you want. It's possible to complete the game without upgrading but is significantly more difficult.
The exploration in this game is just a point-to-point: get to this location, fight boss, and you win. There isn't any free-roaming and is just a one set path - something which most fans will be disappointed with. This slightly takes away from the atmosphere, as you're not able to come back and revisit an area without using chapter select.
For a Survival Horror game, it kind of lacks it's elemental music. In fact, it drifts over to the point where it feels like an action game. The soundtrack stands good, but isn't great.
Finally, DLC that is worth phrase. You'll end up playing Lost in Nightmares and Desperate Escape only a few times, but you'll definitely revisit Versus mode, and possibly The Mercenaries Reunion. Each coming with their own filler & type of fun.
7. Personal Enjoyment
The main campaign feels short; but I had so much fun playing this game with my friends. We've put thousands of hours into this game because it was the best game to play after a hard day's work. Most of our time was spent in Versus mode, where we played as our favourites, and thought of unique ways to kill Majinis rather than killing each other.
8. Overall Verdict
If I could, I would rate this game a full 10. But personal feelings should only have a small impact on the overall score. And that's why Resident Evil 5 gets rated a 9 out of 10. Without DLC; it is only a 7 out of 10. Pick up the game because it's worth a playing at least once. I would say more about the game but the rest is better to experience personally.… Expand

ultimately change the genre from Survival Horror to Action Shooter.
It's a step backward from Resident Evil 4 not only many levels design are very boring and dull the sound
is very annoying the enemies sound all the same and none of them make you scare.
Once you finish a very bad story mode then you get the mercenaries which is the game saver it's
frantic, fun, brutal and ridiculously fun when playing with a friend.
You want Resident Evil game?
This one is not it's like action shooter with the big name attached to it.
But it's definitely a great action game.
Better wait for Outbreak file #3 if they brave enough to go back to their roots.… Expand

Your AII have always been a Resident Evil hater and this is one of them. The gameplay is so boring and actually rather difficult to maneuver. Your AI partner is as dumb as a brick (but sometimes useful), She just runs off into random directions and whenever your trying to call her back she just gets even more lost than before. The zombies are usually really boring and hindering to shoot (just like any other typical resident evil game).
The RPG elements also really suck. Do not buy.… Expand
