The combat is competent if not a bit repetitive and the story is entertaining from start to finish.
  2. The final package is still good, but if you were planning on it being the next big thing, you may be disappointed.
  3. Rise of the Argonauts has its share of flaws, nevertheless it really draws you into a compelling storyline of glory and romance. The combat system appears to be very simplistic but actually offers fresh new combos and a very decent RPG-system. The conversations between Jason and his Argonauts are interesting enough, even though the game sometimes offers you voice samples that are hard to understand. Add gameplay that offers less freedom than your average prison, a lack of a decent HUD and some minor bugs and you'll get a game that needs some courage to be played.
  4. So Rise of the Argonauts isn’t the best action RPG on the market, but it’s no where near the worst. If you enjoyed God of War, or action role-playing games with a mythological twist then you should check out Rise of the Argonauts.
  5. With an adventure at only 10 hours long with no redeeming co-op component, your first run-through should be enough to get what you want out of the game, which is a shame cause Rise of the Argonauts, could have been so much better.
  6. Despite the graphical glitches, poor collision detection, and frustrating (lack of) integration of the world map, Rise of the Argonauts is simply a good game. Both story and dialogue are well-written, the action is awesome and gory, and the skill-upgrading system is thought out really well.
  7. The graphic combat and rich storyline are let down by tiresome dialogue and endless and confusing travel. If you are a fan of the period and want to wallow in the mythology then this game has it by the bucket (amphora?) load, however game wise its lurching pace destroys its underlying potential.
  8. This is not a game you should play for the gameplay. That sounds strange, doesn't it? But Rise of the Argonauts' developers wanted to create an RPG, a genre that used to put the story first.
  9. If you play Rise of the Argonauts, a certain feeling will come up: A feeling which slightly suggests that the developer’s priority was to release the game before Christmas. Because of this early release, you can find many mistakes in the game.

The problem is how the game's put together – so much has been stripped from what we traditionally think of as an RPG and an action game that the result feels like an awkward, neutered hybrid bloated by hours and hours of static dialogue sequences.
  11. The games inability to correctly capture the epic moments in the story of Jason is disconcerting, and stops the game from achieving great feats. The roleplaying mechanics are nice, but can't carry the entire game, making this effort a less than Herculean one.
  12. Jason spends too much time talking and not nearly enough time fighting in this Greek mythology-inspired action-RPG.
  13. Rise of the Argonauts has a nice story and something to offer, but shortcomings like this chip away at the fun and ultimately keep the game from matching its legendary sources of inspiration.
  14. Rise of the Argonauts is an average action game. [Feb 2009, p.84]
  15. Disappointing! Granted, the aggressive argonauts deliver a fresh setting and some good ideas. But when it comes to the basics, the gaming experience is rather weak.
  16. Innovation in Rise of Argonauts goes in the wrong direction. Although the story is not bad and the epic and mythic world remains interesting, it's gameplay mechanics and technical flaws make the game boring and uninteresting.
  17. There isn't enough actual gaming here, so like a TV host facing the "stretch" signal, Argonauts tries to fill the void with talk.

A host of intriguing ideas are severely undermined by weak presentation and far too many bugs. With another six months and an increased budget, Rise Of The Argonauts could have fulfilled its obvious promise.
  19. Unfortunately, the game just didn't gel into one piece of entertainment; instead, it felt like a bunch of unfinished pieces of other games, smooshed together and sent to stores without much oversight in the quality department.
  20. If there's an upside to this game, it's that despite the shallow combat system, it's rather amusing to spill blood in battle. That's a small upside for a game that costs $60 and demands you sit through hours of talking just to kill stuff.
  21. While Rise of the Argonauts offers lots of hacking and slashing, which is fun for a time, its story, style and sound aren’t enough to atone for its shallowness and elevate this odyssey to the epic heights to which it aspires.

It's a pretty game, an ambitious game, a big game--just not a very good one. [Feb 2009, p.74]
  23. It’s simply too painful. At one point they might have had something special, but the entertaining combat and interesting leveling mechanics aren't good enough to prevent the constant, boring, grinding questing.
  24. Rise Of The Argonauts offered less than it promised, thanks to its major technical problems that bring down all the game's potential. Poor visuals, bad sound and artistic choices made this game a disappointment. It's sad seeing an interesting concept like this becoming a game that breathes mediocrity.
  25. Bland, unoriginal, buggy, beleaguered with frame-rate issues, filled with visual 'quirks', and featuring combat that's lacking any great sense of satisfaction, Rise of the Argonauts is a truly lacklustre action-RPG experience.

This is not destined to join the pantheon of action greats. [Mar 2009, p.90]

The way they used the source material and mythology is interesting and original, the mix between RPG and Action/Adventure can be surprisingly fun and pleasant for players who like both styles, unfortunately the Action/Adventure moments are not on par with huge productions like God of War series and the RPG elements are not the most deep or complex on the market, but this game still has a lot of merit with the mix of both styles and the presentation of an epic, interesting, deep and unique mythological journey. The game has not the polish of bigger productions with bigger budges on their back, but with a pretty nice and deep story, interesting and charismatic characters, expressive atmosphere and pleasant gameplay, Rise of the Argonauts is for sure a game with a lot of "heart and soul" . Rise of The Argonauts is not greatest looking game for graphics but it does still look great at times in it's art design. I think many criticsRise of The Argonauts is not greatest looking game for graphics but it does still look great at times in it's art design. I think many critics panned this game because of the games heavy focus on story, character interaction and at times the need for investigating some quests to complete them.

The game has it has it's share of action and the combat is fun but this is not an action focused game. The unique exp/leveling up system based on devoting deeds to certain gods to unlock talents and abilities is both quite original and rewarding.
