All the gore in the world can't disguise Splatterhouse's laundry list of clumsy mechanics.

The sweet nostalgic feeling of Splatterhouse gives way to disappointment as the game had obviously been dash off.

The inclusion of the original Splatterhouse titles as unlockables, along with its many old-school sensibilities - such as side-scrolling stages with arranged music from the old arcade soundtrack - just about tip this into guilty pleasure territory. [Issue#104, p.108]

The Splatterhouse concept is cool. Comic violence, funny oneliners and a lot of action. But unfortunetly, the gameplay is lacking severly and together with a lot of frustrating things, Splatterhouse is ultimately a letdown.

Splatterhouse is for people who want 100% bashing and 0% brains, and who won't care too much for current production values or gameplay standards. The mask and Corrupted story is nicer to follow than we expected, and there's enough content there to quench your thirst for B-Movie style blood. But it still has a more shortcomings than good surprises... a simple title for simple tastes.

Other games have managed to marry over-the-top violence and sex with sound game design, and Splatterhouse just feels like an imitator.

Splatterhouse really is a despicable game, but there are players out there who will adore the chain-wallet-wearing protagonist and his super-violent escapades. The hope may have been for a decent God of War knockoff, but in reality it's just not so.

Everything about this game seems to be a loud, obnoxious effort to suck out the fun with a bloody straw made from an empty sausage casing. [Feb 2010, p.84]

Splatterhouse is a bloody beat 'em up with an overabundance of violence and a somewhat coherent story. What it is not though is a good game and something you could recommend with a straight face.

The Splatterhouse remake is a great, fun and gory game. Have some bugs and **** but, all of this cant compromise the game.

It has humor, power-ups, 3-D & 2-D moments, risque pictures of Jennifer to collect, arenas to unlock, the original uncut splatterhouse games, and a decent story. It pays homage to classic horror movies and is worth picking up. I highly recommend this gory gem! Full Review »
