Going by mechanics alone, Splatterhouse is solid, though uninspired. But the extra touches help elevate it from passable distraction to entertaining diversion.

Throw in some surprisingly nuanced storytelling, some boss battles that can only reasonably be described as mega, and what Namco have produced here is something of a masterpiece of the beat-'em-up genre. Splatterhouse is a vulgar, noisy, shallow, juvenile, gruesome gem of a game that never forgets to be fun, even when going out of its way to be as appalling as possible.

Overall Splatterhouse is a great buy if you're in the mood for an action game.

Splatterhouse will be liked by a very concrete type of player, who will be able to forgive its lack of variety in gameplay and have fun watching hundreds of litres of blood spread after every blow to the enemies.

If you're a fan of slasher films and all-around gory themes, then you'll have a blast if you can look past the lack of polish. Previous fans of the franchise will love it. Newcomers, be wary if you strive for perfection out of your games.

This remake of Splatterhouse is much like a modern slasher movie. It's loud, brash and gory, but luckily, it's wrapped in an experience that doesn't try to overstay its welcome.

Let's start with a premise: beware of those who, overcome by frustration and difficulty, will tell you that there's nothing good in Splatterhouse. This remake pays tribute to the original arcade game in the best possible way, adding details and time travels to an already engaging story. The gameplay is extremely raw and unforgiving, which will make you scream out of frustration several times, but it also will definitely keep you glued to the screen for all twelve levels.

Splatterhouse falls short of classic brawler status, but there's still fun to be had out of dishing out handjobs and experimenting with the range of grisly moves on offer.

This game was better than I thought it would be, and better than it perhaps should have been. With more refinement and redesigned (or eliminated) platforming, this could have been a classic in the beat 'em up genre, but as it stands, Splatterhouse is pretty damn good for what it is, and packs enough content to keep fans satisfied. Ridiculous gore, silly metal music, and endless amounts of brutal, nostalgic combat.

It has humor, power-ups, 3-D & 2-D moments, risque pictures of Jennifer to collect, arenas to unlock, the original uncut splatterhouse games, and a decent story. It pays homage to classic horror movies and is worth picking up. I highly recommend this gory gem! Full Review »
