  • Summary: Surf's Up is an arcade surfing and extreme sports video game. The action is set at the annual "Reggie Belafonte Big Z Memorial Surf Off," where surfers from around the world are ready to risk it all for glory. Players experience the rush and thrills of surfing in exotic surf spots around Pen Gu Island and can rip it up and play as one of 10 characters from the film, including Cody, the young challenger from Shiverpool; Tank, the merciless champion; or Big Z, the surfing legend from the past. Only by mastering and understanding the waves can the player become not only the new champion, but a true surf legend. Game features include: Innovative arcade and surf feeling with players performing a variety of impressive tricks in the air and learning to surf inside a tube. Win the championship in the single-player mode or challenge your friends in the multiplayer mode with easy pick-up-and-play game controls. Surf in a variety of locations, each with its own waves and obstacles. Train in the calm water of Shiverpool, ride your first tubes in Pen Gu Island, and try to surf on the explosive waters of the volcano area. [Ubisoft] Expand

  1. While the control is pretty solid, and the speed and action is actually very good, there is one significant flaw that permeates the entire experience: the response to your button presses is often erratic and rarely predictable or reliable.
  2. This is the first licensed game I’ve played that is actually shorter than its movie. I’m not exaggerating; in a little over an hour I had received trophies in all of the main surf events.

The gameplay is simple but enjoyable and kids in love with the movie are sure to have a good time with the game, but the fact remains that this is a bloated price tag on a barebones game.
  4. There's sadly no imagination here. [Sept 2007, p.108]
  5. Younger kids will love it and come back for more. A fun concept, well executed.
  6. Let there be no doubt, Surf's Up is strictly for kids in love with the movie. The redundancy of the gameplay will certainly help to break one's obsession with all things penguin in a weekend. Definitely a rental.
  7. A competitive mutiplayer mode adds some longevity, but for a game that costs $50, three hours of single-player gameplay is simply unacceptable. [Sept 2007, p.84]

This game isn't meant to be a hardcore serious gamer game. Take it for what it is, have some fun, entertain the guests' children when you have company. Don't buy it new, its not worth $50, but it's definately worth it for $25 used if you can find it on Ebay or at a game store. Collapse

Surfs Up is an attempt to copy Tony Hawks but gone a bit wrong. Way too repetitive for any real credit but a passable game for the family. Great for co-op though. Expand

The Tony Hawk for pre-teens. And this game gets played just as much. A lot of rehashing catch phrases makes you want to keep the volume down low and turn up the surfing music. Maybe I'm being too hard on it, but the game doesn't have much substance. Expand
