A movie tie-in game better than the film it's based on.

Simply put: this game looks and sounds great, and after some gimmicky missteps with the last few franchise entries, we're pleasantly surprised to find this is the Spider-Man game we've been yearning for, not just another licensed tie-in. [Sept 2012, p.82]
  3. Jul 3, 2012
The Amazing Spider-Man may not only go down as one of the best Spider-Man games but one of the better movie licensed games out there because it doesn't feel like a movie game. Beenox did a great job of taking a movie based gaming and fleshing it out into its own thing.

Even with abilities that are steadily upgraded as you progress, The Amazing Spider-Man never feels quite as precise as you might wish thanks largely to quicktime instructions that come too thick and fast for the timed responses.
  5. Jul 1, 2012
Fans of Stan Lee's genius can expect a wealth of funny and informative one-liners (recorded by the man himself) as he swings and pummels his way through Manhattan.
  6. Jun 29, 2012
The Amazing Spiderman is not your usual crappy tie-in but a good adventure with tons of stuff to do which really feels like a Spiderman game should.
  7. Jun 26, 2012
This is the real draw of The Amazing Spider-Man. You are Spider-Man. You may not feel it completely (as you would with, say, a Mirror's Edge-styled Spider-Man game), but there is no doubt that the heart of the game is once again in the free roam. It is fun to beat up bad guys with that particular Spidey flair, but nothing will ever replace the feeling players get while soaring through the city.

Amazing Spider-Man: The Video Game is terrific fun for web-slinging in the skies of Manhattan, but as a whole falls short of the brilliance of the Batman games it copies due to lackluster level design and repetitive gameplay. [Sept 2012]
  9. Jul 24, 2012
It is not amazing, however it is a good action-adventure with a new interesting story and it is quite fun to swing through Manhattan. If you can handle some smaller shortcomings, you will have fun with The Amazing Spider-Man.

Web Rushing makes you feel full-on super-powered. Although clumsy interior sections shatter the illusion, this is almost Spider-Man's Arkham. [Sept 2012, p.98]
  11. Aug 27, 2012
The Amazing Spider-Man tries very hard to emulate Batman Arkham City, but despite solid controls, especially the well-designed Web Rush, and a good amount of single-player gameplay, the open-world concept doesn't offer much else in the form of any kind of really challenging gameplay and engaging side-mission variety as its obvious inspiration, the award-winning Batman Arkham City.
  12. Jul 11, 2012
The Amazing Spider-Man isn't the best superhero game out there, but it sure is entertaining. Web-slinging through Manhattan is really fun. The main story however is less impressive.
  13. Jul 5, 2012
The Amazing Spider-Man has laid an awesome foundation of gaming mechanics through its open-world design; I just hope to see more of it embraced in future games.
  14. Jun 27, 2012
The Amazing Spiderman isn't truly 'amazing' but it is a very nice game: well done in almost every aspect but it's not particularly challenging. Very fun to play and enjoyable, but after all, it should be called "The Average Spiderman".
  15. Jun 26, 2012
When developer Beenox gives Spidey room to soar, you get caught up in the pure elation of swinging through a spirited city, where helicopters hover overhead and well-wishers call out to you in the streets. And that elation is the best reason to don the suit once more and remind yourself that with great power comes good fun.
  16. Jul 2, 2012
If you are a fan of Spider-Man, the game is worth picking up, but if you aren't, you might want to wait until the price drops. If you are planning on picking this game up, see the movie before purchasing it so you can avoid the spoilers. You have been warned.
  17. Jul 2, 2012
Lacks some of the polish and refinement that would make it a really solid, even addicting title. We spend too much time indoors..., the story is a little lame, and the difficulty is scaled back a little too much. But it's easy to pick up and play, exploring the city never gets boring, and fans of the web-slinging hero can spend a lot of time battling, upgrading, and just soaring along.
  18. Jul 30, 2012
Yes, it's repetitive, borrows heavily from other games and isn't all that impressive in the graphics department. That, however, does not stop this game from being an incredibly fun experience.
  19. Jul 27, 2012
Not exactly brilliant, but The Amazing Spider-man is a good game and a nice tie-in of the blockbuster movie.
  20. Jul 23, 2012
As it goes, this game is better than last year's Edge of Time and should be considered if you're feeling the need to act out a Spider-Man fantasy without getting into your own costume and causing harm to yourself as you try to wall climb up your house wall. It's not amazing to do something like that, but it sure can be amusing, just like this game.

Arkham City is arguably the best superhero game ever made, so it makes sense that Beenox would look to it for inspiration. And while The Amazing Spider-Man seldom succeeds entirely in emulating the accomplishments of its illustrious antecedent, it makes a pretty decent fist of it, for the most part. [August 2012, p72]
  22. Jul 16, 2012
Despite the underwhelming mission design and the uneven graphics, I still really enjoy The Amazing Spider-Man. It's a game that proves that the whole product can be something bigger than the individual parts and that all you need sometimes is one great part of gameplay to lift the entire product.
  23. 70
It's a terrific starting point to build future installments from. However, I think that Beenox really needs to sit down and understand what makes Spider-Man an interesting character to play and find ways to accurately capture that feeling without overly simplifying the experience.
  24. Jul 2, 2012
The mechanics are smooth and the gameplay is fun, but The Amazing-Spider-Man is relentlessly average and destined to be forgotten in the annals of time. The game displays a bunch of promise that it never manages to fulfill.
  25. Jun 26, 2012
The visuals aren't stunning, the story isn't crazy exciting, and the missions get repetitive. But The Amazing Spider-Man is fun to play.

As much as the developer values Spider-Man as a superhero, they seem to be an even bigger fan of a certain billionaire by day/vigilante at night called the Batman. It would certainly explain why this game is an almost exact copy of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. [September 2012, p.78]
  27. Jul 7, 2012
The Amazing Spider-Man never reaches its full potential. The missions are repetitive and the combat system is not as fluent as in Arkham City. The web slinging in Manhattan makes up for a whole lot, but The Amazing Spider-Man never really amazes.
  28. Jun 26, 2012
The game displays a lot of promise early on, but it devolves into mediocrity after you've invested a few hours learning its basic systems.
  29. Jul 13, 2012
Overall, the Amazing Spider-Man succeeds at offering a great story, but fails at accomplishing its goal of making you feel like Spidey.
  30. Jul 6, 2012
Despite a fairly large amount of flaws, The Amazing Spider-Man is an enjoyable game. It's not the best encounter with virtual Spidey (for me it's Shattered Dimensions), but I believe that the story and fun of flying over Manhattan are enough, to give it a chance. Unoriginal missions, poor stealth mechanic and and idiotic AI can turn people off, but it's still worth a shot (and the single-player campaign takes about 8 hours).

Why can't Activision approach Spidey seriously, invest enough money and time and finally make a game that all Spider-Man fans are waiting for? The Amazing Spider-Man ain't it. [August 2012, p.64]

Fun in short bursts and sometimes exhilarating to navigate the city, but The Amazing Spider-Man is still washed down the spout by the fact that it's dull. [Issue#221, p.74]
  33. Aug 11, 2012
It is clear that with limited production time, what Beenox managed to create is almost unbelievable, and if you are Spidey fan, The Amazing Spider-Man will entertain you for hours.
  34. Gameplay is enjoyable but in a brief and shallow way. The longer you spend with it the less you get. There's a lack of imagination where this feels more about keeping you occupied than creating an interesting world filled with atmosphere. It lacks the variety and texture you really need keep things exciting.

It´s good to see that there is more potential left for a good Spider-Man game than the last downers let you to believe. The Amazing Spider-Man is a package of an open world to frolic around in and linear missions to keep it together. It is a decent game that makes it painful to think about what it could have been if the developer would have had more time to polish it. There are a lot of hints to the possibilities, but the movie is out now. One wonders, if its producer also had just three-quarters of a year to work with.
  36. Oct 27, 2012
It feels like a pale copy of Rocksteadys Batman: Arkham Asylum, lacking in charm and unique features. The game is also plagued by both small and big technical issues that drop it down to a disappointing level of mediocrity. It's not all bad, but as a package it is uninspired, empty and flat.
  37. 50
The Spider-Man game franchise has long been a series that gamers have always thought should work, but it rarely has. The third attempt from Beenox, but first attempt at an open world version, shows some promise, but it has a lot of cracks along the way.

Developer Beenox has createdThe Amazing Spider-Man is the most fun I have had with a video game in a while. Why? Because you're Spider-Man! Developer Beenox has created an open world New York City where you can roam around as Spider-Man and do random side missions all while doing the main story too. The main storyline takes place after the movie and contains many spoilers and even though it seemed a little far-fetched, the boss battles were epic. Giant robots chasing Spider-man as you have to doge each attack and find the weak points. The action is greatly influenced by that of Arkham City which is a great thing! There are many costumes to collect for Spider-Man and it is even just fun to swing around NYC. Another great aspect of this game is that there are 700+ collectibles which will continuously keep you playing for more. There were only two MAJOR flaws i felt about this game. Sometimes, the character animations for the mouth didn't match with the voices and the story was a bit too short (even though it was VERY fun). If you are looking for a game which will be a blast to play and will probably have DLC coming soon and lots of collectables, then this is the game for you. Full Review »
