The UnderGarden's unique elements come together to make for an enjoyable and relaxing game experience.
A wonderful puzzle game and also a visual adventures, which knows how to use curiosity for unknown, shiny and beautiful things to build objectives.
The Undergarden is both a return to the compulsion of traditional point-driven gaming and an exercise in non-compulsory experiential gaming, and it delivers both styles in one of the most pleasant indie packages since Flower.
It's an ambient experience stuffed with a very simple puzzle game, not a complex chicken cordon bleu as much as a comforting pig-in-a-blanket. Possibly the best looking pig-in-a-blanket you'll come across.
"What is this place?", "Why is this place?" seems to be the question here. Why does this game exist? It's not outstandingly beautiful or thrilling. It's not outstanding in any way. If you dig the style, check it out – if not, you won't miss much investing your Microsoft points elsewhere.
Unlike the Buddha, who waited for his students to grasp his lesson on their own, The UnderGarden felt the need to prompt me. That's not very Zen, dude.
I can certainly applaud The Undergarden's developers for trying something different, but the concept here is not nearly strong enough to support the bland and pedestrian gameplay. Even casual games still demand a level of interest from the player, and The Undergarden doesn't have it.
