Vanquish will keep you on the edge of your multi-thruster booster seat.
  2. Oct 20, 2010
Vanquish is all game and no filler, and that's exactly what makes it one of the most gleeful and memorable experiences of the year.
  3. Oct 25, 2010
It's fast, furious, and most importantly, fun. So much so that immediately after I finished the game, I started over again on a harder difficulty.
  4. Oct 20, 2010
Vanquish is great fun while it lasts, though it only lasts about six hours (if only there was more to do!). Still, absolutely worth playing.
  5. Oct 27, 2010
It's silly, it's outrageous, it's campy – and it's perfect at being so. And in that way, despite its futuristic sheen, Vanquish is a child of the '80s more than anything else.
  6. Oct 20, 2010
Vanquish has achieved something we though would be difficult to see. Gives a new spin to the third-person action genre, leaving behind most of its competitors.

Puts a rocket up the bottom of cover-based shooters. Embrace its reckless sense of speed. [Issue#232, p.80]
  8. Oct 20, 2010
At its peak, Vanquish is a beautifully fast and intense fusion of East and West third-person gameplay -- it just isn't quite as good as the director or the studio's previous work.
  9. Oct 26, 2010
This is action at its most raw and fans of the golden days of arcade games will definitely be in for a treat.
  10. Oct 20, 2010
Insanely fast and relentlessly fun, Vanquish manages to keep up a breakneck pace almost throughout its entire runtime, never quite slowing down enough to get boring. Of all the Gears of War-alikes we've played, this may be the best.
  11. Oct 21, 2010
Vanquish is a unique game, with a brilliant gameplay and a stunning graphic style. Its limit is the coin-op style of the structure (all based on the score and on the player skill) that gives nothing apart an exciting but repetitious challenge.
  12. Oct 20, 2010
Vanquish is a beautifully fast and intense shooter, probably one of the best experiences of the year. The bad: It ends too soon.
  13. Oct 21, 2010
Super high speed action gameplay and some rulebreaking techniques won't make the Gears of War fans too happy, still Vanquish is a solid shooter, somehow innovative. A shame for the background story and the characters, flat and unimaginative. If you love the genre and want to try something new, this is one to strongly consider.
  14. Oct 21, 2010
Vanquish proves that there's still space for ridiculous dialogue, clichéd characters, amped-up power-suits and big guns alongside the Heavy Rains of the industry, as long as the intelligent gameplay structure is present too. And it is. Platinum Games knows how to craft a good videogame. It's as simple as that, and right now, the team is competing only with itself.

Finally, Sega can dust off that classic marketing line, because once you've played Vanquish, everything else seems a little bit slow. [Dec 2010, p.86]
  16. Dec 15, 2010
If you are looking to be enthralled by a new world full of intricacies to discover, Vanquish is not the fully formed video game you are looking for. If you are looking for a challenge with a fun and fast paced battle experience, Vanquish is definitely suited to your taste.
  17. Oct 20, 2010
Vanquish is an awesome game that, despite its lack of variety and short length, is capable of granting an over the top action, with a fantastic design and well balanced difficulty. If you're looking for a tough action game, insert Vanquish in your "to buy" list.
  18. Oct 20, 2010
If you enjoy shooters then you absolutely must experience Vanquish; just know that you're not going to be getting much more than a weekend's play unless you get addicted to high scores and challenges.
  19. Oct 28, 2010
Despite a non-existent story and poor characterization, Vanquish manages to breathe life into an otherwise stagnating genre.
  20. Oct 25, 2010
Vanquish is a surprisingly good game. The gameplay is simply great and so it is a shame that the game can be finished in such a short amount of time. We certainly recommend this title if you are looking for a unique and very cool shooter.
  21. Oct 20, 2010
Even though it's let down by longevity and a lack of ancillary options this still plays like a classic and is one of the best new shooters of its generation.
  22. Oct 24, 2010
Vanquish is no greater literature, but that's ok. It's pure pulp, and combined with all the basic shooter-elements that are woven in professionally, and the absurd mix of explosive gameplay and cheesy one-liners, this is one strange but satisfying package. A fantastic game for the fanatic gamer and one of the biggest surprises of the year.

What counts is that, once mastered, Vanquish has arguably the best example of third-person gunplay yet committed to Blu-ray. [Issue#51, p.112]
  24. Oct 20, 2010
For fans of Bayonetta and those who found Gears of War a bit too slow and clunky, Vanquish is definitely going to please.
  25. Oct 21, 2010
Vanquish is a refreshing adrenaline shot that can only be welcomed by TPS and action fans. Too bad it's so short, and some bosses have a tendency to come back a little too many times, or that there isn't some multiplayer feature too enjoy this fast-paced gameplay among friends. Nevertheless, Vanquish is so epic, blessed by a gameplay so precisely crafted, that it's easy to overlook these flaws.
  26. Feb 9, 2011
Vanquish manages in many ways to be quite literally awesome though; from the bombastic battles you partake in, through its outstanding technical performance, brilliantly ridiculous cutscenes and superb twists on an established genre.
  27. Oct 25, 2010
Vanquish only sounds a single note, but it does so with style and flair to spare. The most polished, exciting and interesting shooter of the year.
  28. Dec 19, 2010
While other developers pursue more realistic experiences, Platinum never loses sight that it's making a videogame.
  29. Oct 25, 2010
Vanquish isn't simply Japan's proper response to cover-based shooters, it's the most dramatic take upon the genre thus far.

All the relentless pace and slick style of a classic 2D Japanese action game in a 3D modern masterpiece. [Issue#197, p.71]
  31. Dec 19, 2010
There's much to like about Platinum Games' orgy of mech madness.
  32. 90
The combat, mechanics and action are so innovative, and are done so well it's easily one of the best games to grace consoles this year.
  33. Oct 20, 2010
Despite its Master Chief and Marcus Fenix guises, Vanquish is ultimately much more Japanese in its orientation than it is Westernised. Unlike MadWorld and Bayonetta though, it just lacks the poised gameplay balancing that could've made it a much more addictive experience.
  34. Dec 15, 2010
It's a fresh, unrelenting take on a stale genre that has you grinning from beginning to end.
  35. Oct 27, 2010
All in all, it is fairly a short romp (expect anywhere between 5 to 8 hours of gameplay), its story is unfocused, and the replay factor is minimal at best. Despite that though, Vanquish offers a thrilling experience filled with stylish, guns a' blazing action, fabulous visuals and some rather unique features.
  36. Oct 20, 2010
Vanquish is technically proficient and does a lot of things extremely well. What it does best is give the player a continual sense of urgency and immersion, two traits that are often difficult to maintain.
  37. Oct 27, 2010
Unfortunately Vanquish is short - about six to seven hours on first play through – and there isn't a swathe of bonus content. That said, this is the only game I have ever completed and immediately restarted, ever.

There's really been nothing else quite like it this generation, which makes comparison difficult, and its one misstep is the fact that its only online component is a paltry ranking system. In truth, having multiplayer inside the chaotic sphere of Vanquish would have made Mikami's latest baby the prodigal son of third-person shooters. There's always next time though. [December 2010 p78]
  39. Oct 20, 2010
Vanquish is another great creation by Shinji Mikami and Platinum Games.
  40. Dec 19, 2010
At its core, even though it's pretty short (the game can be beaten in less than 8 hours), Vanquish is a great game.
  41. Oct 25, 2010
Non-stop action with great graphics and superb bosses; Vanquish makes us thirsty for more.

  43. Dec 15, 2010
Vanquish is a pure action game at its finest. It's all-killer-no-filler approach makes it the perfect type of game to enjoy amidst the holiday rush of major releases. Sure, it's short and not that original, but it's fun and satisfying.
  44. Jan 13, 2011
Vanquish cheers up the cover genre with a high-tech armor and polished game mechanics. Neither the characters or the story is impressive, but you rarely forget a perfect game control.
  45. Dec 15, 2010
A highly polished gameplay foundation makes Vanquish a title well worth playing, even if it's over far too quickly, something that unfortunately cannot be said of its cliche laden story and incredibly annoying character dialogue.
  46. Oct 28, 2010
There isn't really anything that I can say that I personally dislike about the game. The length, difficulty, and corny story will turn a lot of people off, but the incredible gameplay and thrill of climbing the leaderboards is more than enough to keep this gamer engaged.
  47. Dec 15, 2010
Vanquish is fun, it's exciting and it's a fresh take on the cover based shooter that breathes a bit of originality into the genre.
  48. 70
Mikami has the basis for a gorgeous, thrilling shooter here. But the wooden narrative, stale mechanic and non-existent learning curve prevent Vanquish from ever reaching those heights.
  49. Dec 19, 2010
Its weird, half-hearted political gestures aside, Vanquish is the kind of video game that reminds you that these are video games. Perhaps more than any quality, video games allow for visceral thrills unfettered by the real-world logistics of physics and general plausibility. Sometimes a game just needs to look cool and make you feel like a space-age badass, and Vanquish accomplishes both with vigor.

It's all over a bit too quickly, but the open-ended story virtually ensures a sequel--leaving us eager to don the ARS once again. [Dec 2010, p.76]
  51. Dec 19, 2010
This is a ride you don't want to miss.
  52. Dec 14, 2010
Apply Devil May Cry's stylish, breakneck sensibilities to the run-duck-and-gun of Gears of War. All of the trappings are perfectly sound if not extraordinary, and despite one or two incredibly vexing design decisions, Vanquish's combat is blisteringly fast and a genuine pleasure to watch and play when it's going well - but an exercise in maddening frustration when it isn't.
  53. 80
A solid take on the cover-based shooter that borrows heavily from Gears of War but adds plenty of its own spice. The slow motion effect that activates whenever you're close to dying is absolutely brilliant and will hopefully see its way to other games. There's something intangible missing, which keeps Vanquish from reaching top marks, but it remains a strong action game and deserves to become a hit.
  54. Jan 31, 2011
If you're still itching to waste a few hours on Vanquish, here's some advice: wait until the inevitable price reduction.
  55. Oct 20, 2010
    Quotation forthcoming.
  56. Jan 2, 2011
It won't make you think or leave you in awe, but its gung-ho style of gameplay is thrilling and incredibly fun while it lasts.
  57. Jan 16, 2011
As soon as you get behind the tricky controls, the killing of the robot-armies is fun. Sadly, the campaign of the action-blockbuster is very short.
  58. Dec 15, 2010
If you're looking for a slice of science-fiction heaven that injects the gameplay of Gears of War with a crazy dose of speed, then you won't do much better than Vanquish.
  59. Jan 12, 2011
The gameplay of Vanquish is great, you play as Sam Gideon in a special suit in space. You have to fight against robots and you can do this with a lot of different weapons. You can also slide with your knees from cover to cover and that's pretty cool. Vanquish is a great purchase, but the game is pretty short, too short and it doesn't have any other modi besides the singleplayer.
  60. Oct 20, 2010
Vanquish isn't going to change the face of gaming, but it's impressive to behold, satisfying to play (as long as you're reasonably hardcore) and shot through with humour (look out, for example, for the robots dancing to a ghetto-blaster which transforms into a mobile gun).
  61. Dec 15, 2010
I'm not sure any of this really matters- Vanquish is polished and supremely well executed, and everyone should really make the effort to give it a go.

To me the only problem with the game is that it was so good it left me wanting more. This is seen as the only major issue the game has, but still during the 6-7 hours the game takes to complete you will be in pure shooter nirvana. The great graphics, the welcomed difficulty and the overall sense of mayhem makes this game one of the years best games on the PS3. Full Review »

I'm talking about those big cabinet games that moved around like After Burner and cost $1 to play. Every second of this game is fun fun fun. The graphics are beautiful and the gameplay addicting because the control mechanics are TOP NOTCH. I suggest going through the last couple tutorials before starting but after that, it's all second nature. The story behind the game is simple, but a lot of fun..again it's a throw back of the corny but cool characters in arcade games back in it's golden era before the home market caught up and became superior over the coin-ops. There are 2 demos on the PSN right now.. I played them for about an hour before grabbing my jacket to go to the store to pick this game up. Nowadays games have to be at least 10 hours of gameplay for some to bother but there is a lot more to offer here. The game makes you want to improve on all your stats because it's so addicting. Playing through it you start thinking, I bet I could get through this faster next time if I throw my grenades here first, wait to blow up the exploding barrel here, and take cover here. One of the demos is a timed challenge, this is what did it for me, besides the amazingly awesome WOW moments that's in the campaign. Think God of War with kick-ass guns, only you're not Kratos, you're a regular average good guy in an awesome accelerator suit from a bad movie. (GI JOE) Also if there are any Bayonetta fans out there, as I was, Vanquish is better. Full Review »
