As a whole, VF 5: Final Showdown is one of those games that I think of as top-shelf, but all the secondary factors like DLC and available options for it put an asterisk next to that when it comes to recommending it to others. If you love the series, you'll get whatever amount of money you spend on it back in sheer enjoyment. If you don't, then at least try the free PSN version or XBLA demo and see if it changes your mind.

Its prudence, that veil of simplicity masking a system of astonishing possibility and depth, makes it one of the purest fighting games on the market today.

    A purist fighter. [Issue#220, p.79]
  4. As a $15 stand-alone download, Showdown is an absolute steal. [Aug 2012, p.80]

The genre is as healthy as ever, and this Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown is great news for fans of 3D fighting. Although it is a digital only title, it resist the comparison with its rivals, although the game itself is not that new and it lacks single player modes.

At £9.99/$14.99, there's no excuse for fighting fans not to try Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown. Intricate and occasionally obtuse though it may be, it's also wonderfully balanced and endlessly varied; those who get past its initial barriers rarely go back. One of the world's best fighting games at this price should not be missed.

For a very inexpensive price, you get a polished, well made fighting game that is well worth the money for newcomers to the series and the Virtua Fighter veterans alike.

  1. I just can't define the epic-ness of once again playing vf online after all these years. Vf is my favorite fighting game of all time and possibly my favorite game of all time. I do wish there was more single player components, but I understand it at this price. I'm still debating whether to dedicate myself to this game once more. With the newfound smoothness of gameplay it's probably worth it. Sf4 served me for years but vf is still king. Full Review »
  2. For a base price of 15$ minus the quest mode from the original release this is still a fantastic game. All the modes are great and the tutorial is by far the best of the year. Seeing as you are also getting online play which was lacking in the original release some years ago is also a added bonus. The netcode is great and I've only had a few hiccups. The only real flaw is the customization items, the DLC ones are just meh. Really you only get maybe 5-10 original character items and the five colours associated with it, just a little gripe on a superb game. Full Review »

This might be the best fighting game ever made, deep like no other, fun, addictive, easy to play and hard as **** to master...the only ones not liking it are the ones who can't learn the mechanincs.
You know? No supers, no X factor...just pure true skills.
