  1. Virtua Tennis 2009 is like a missed chance. Technically speaking, the programmers have done a good job, and who has never played at VT before could really enjoy it. But if you’re an aficionado of this franchise, this will look to you like nothing more than a restyling. And a polished look just isn’t enough for a fully priced game.
  2. Virtua Tennis really needs to start justifying its existence at this point. It’s more of the same with some minor additions, and is only recommendable if you missed the previous games. With other tennis games competing for the top spot, Virtua can’t be complacent for one more game. Evolution is a must.
  3. It's hard not to feel a little underwhelmed by what Virtua Tennis 2009 has to offer. While the online multiplayer facet has undoubtedly been improved, the disappointment over what's been done to World Tour mode and the general lack of ambition in certain areas leaves me wanting.
  4. Despite the fact that all the evidence suggests Virtua Tennis is a series stuck in a rut, Virtua Tennis 2009 is still great fun, especially in multiplayer.
  5. Virtua Tennis 2009 is a game dedicated to the fans of the series and more in general a good, arcade tennis game. If you already own the third chapter, you should think carefully before buying, anyway, as, even if it's the best of the brand, it doesn't evolve so much from the predecessor.
  6. Virtua Tennis feels like a decent tennis-game. It, however, will never feel like a revolution due to the lack of new gameplay elements. Even though Sega has put in some nice and entertaining, but very small, adjustments. Virtua tennis has easily reached its full potential.
  7. Virtua Tennis 2009 is an update of the series and with the exception of minor improvements and refinements, only a few innovations have been implemented. Most devoted fans may be disappointed with the lack innovation; still it is fun to play as usual.

The good news is that playing with friends is still really fun. [July 2009, p.96]
  9. Virtua Tennis 2009 is not a bad game, not at all really. It’s just incredibly familiar if you’ve played Virtua Tennis 3, and seeing as that came out three years ago it’s not particularly a good thing.
  10. There maybe some minor issues with regard to slow-down and lagging, but overall Virtua Tennis 2009 is a well-presented, and exceptionally playable tennis game.
  11. The Top Spin series, despite its gameplay issues, at least made an effort. Virtua Tennis needs to try much harder if it’s going to regain its title as the preeminent tennis franchise.

It's a slight advancement over its predecessor, VT 3, but its biggest weaknesses, the online and single-player modes, mire an otherwise satisfying experience.

While Virtua Tennis 2009 is still the best arcade tennis game around, it is hard to recommend for anyone who has any of the previous games. With too few changes and a faulty online experience, Virtua Tennis 2009 doesn't quite miss the ball, but it's certainly no ace.

A disappointment for me. Maybe it’s because I’m a rabid tennis fan and player and I wanted more from the series this year, or maybe it’s because I feel like I’ve played this game before on the Dreamcast.
  15. Virtua Tennis is too easy and inconsistent to entertain you for long.
  16. Virtua Tennis shines of the light of the original one. Too many problems for the single player and a lack of courage by Sumo Digital keep it in limbo.
  17. Truly, Virtua Tennis 2009 is little more than a lazily rehashed and less than polished iteration of what was offered in Virtua Tennis 3.

If you're a seasoned pro of the Virtua Tennis series, the latest tweaks don't necessarily add enough layers to warrant an upgrade. [Sept 2009, p.79]
  19. It’s disappointing from a tennis fan’s standpoint to inform you that this isn’t worthy of your time or money.
  20. If you're a fan of tricky action packed and past-faced tennis, then look the other way. Virtua Tennis 2009 is an arcade game, period. The game is to easy, extremely boring, and has very little content compared to its 2 year old predecessor. Add a useless net code and you've got yourself a huge $60 dollar disappointment.

The game engine itself is fine but the lack of options or any 'real' career mode is unforgivable. Online is a poor experience. Why can't theyThe game engine itself is fine but the lack of options or any 'real' career mode is unforgivable. Online is a poor experience. Why can't they make a real tennis sim where peopel start as a lowly amateur and work their way up. In virtua tennis you meet Federov after like one game.......hardly realistic. Looks pretty plays ok, better for a post pub bash with a mate. Full Review »

nothing new about the game really, gets boring, its too much of an arcade and doesnt allow much chance of perfecting game tecnique, its just anothing new about the game really, gets boring, its too much of an arcade and doesnt allow much chance of perfecting game tecnique, its just a hit the button game, no skill required for it.
its just like a game for time killing than really playing to enjoy.
no improvements in the gameplay, i hate not to have a chance to hit the ball where i want to hit it, the ball might just go where the game wants it too.
i have played games in JAVA that have better game play than this

If u had the last installment, then u may as well buy that again and have two copies. There is such minimal changes to the game. The one If u had the last installment, then u may as well buy that again and have two copies. There is such minimal changes to the game. The one thing I was excited about, Online play, was so laggy its practically unplayable. The other player appears on the other side of the court just as the ball is hit. And yes I have a fast ADSL connection. I still gave the game a 7 because it still is a good game, like the last one. So if u never played the other installments it really is worth buying. I will try out the online a few more times because I might have been playing people with slow connections in other countries ? If that is the case, they should be banned (lol). Full Review »
