  1. It's rarely short of absurd charm or interesting things to do. [Oct 2014, p.88]
  2. Sep 19, 2014
A wonderful example of what can be achieved when developers dispense with tradition. [Nov 2014, p.66]
  3. A gorgeous explore 'n' experiment experience. Can be too directionless which can harsh one's buzz. [October 2014, p83]
  4. Sep 18, 2014
A curious, colorful adventure that is unlike anything you've ever played before. [Issue#248, p.66]
  5. Sep 17, 2014
Hohokum is a conundrum as it doesn't quite feel like a proper game. It's a bright and cheerful Snake clone that focuses on offering as relaxing experience as possible. The lack of a proper goal and complete lack of challenge are a bit hard to swallow. [Sept 2014]

Hohokum is a spiritual journey without a destination. It starts as an interactive screensaver, but slowly unfolds into a puzzle game. There are no hints, which is refreshing but ends up being feeling a a bit frustrating. It requires backtracking through a world in which navigation is cumbersome. That repetition detracts from the phenomenal design and soundtrack.
  7. Sep 17, 2014
Hohokum is a calming experience that will start to rub you the wrong way after a while. At first you’ll be able to enjoy the amazing soundtrack and imagery to the fullest. But you won’t escape treating the game in a very pragmatic way to progress further in the game. A bit weird for a piece of art that is so big on atmosphere.

Hohokum is a really relaxing game, with brightly colored worlds and soothing music, but people looking for a challenge are at the wrong address with Hohokum.

Hohokum is unlike anything you’ve ever played in your PlayStation. Occasionally there are different experiences on Sony consoles like Patapon, flOw and Journey that make us believe that video games are an art form. Hohokum can be placed in the same group.
  10. Sep 4, 2014
Hohokum is a strange experience: there's a little bit of puzzle solving in it, but the main value of the game remains its artistic and creative look.
  11. Sep 4, 2014
Hohokum is a pretty odd experience, where traditional game mechanics is hard to find. What’s left is a game free from tutorials and instructions, with a beautiful world where nothing feels forced. Thanks to that both the hardcore player and the beginner can find something here.
  12. Sep 4, 2014
Hohokum is a pleasantly strange break from reality. It’s filled with color, personality and charm, and if you can overlook the lack of game-like structure to find your own way in the game’s psychedelic world, you’ll find a satisfying meditative experience backed by precise controls.
  13. Sep 3, 2014
It’s certainly not going to be a game for everyone but it undoubtedly resonated with me.
  14. Sep 2, 2014
Hohokum is a weird game above all else. The relaxing music and special visual style, however, is held back by clumsy level design.

In the interests of variety, evolution, and the survival of creative thought, Hohokum is a game that needs to exist and be celebrated by those who can appreciate it.
  16. Sep 1, 2014
Hohokum is a weird, interesting game that unfortunately not everybody is going to enjoy. Try it if you have a chance, you could fall in love with this stylish piece of art from the British studio Honeyslug.
  17. Aug 29, 2014
Players will be discovering secrets in Hohokum for years, even if the ways to interact with it are quite limited.
  18. Aug 29, 2014
Hohokum is a perfect blend of low-impact gameplay, adorable visuals and a great soundtrack. The only downsides are some of the harder puzzles towards the end, but those frustrations are easy to overcome if you give Hohokum the time it deserves.
  19. Aug 28, 2014
Don’t venture into Hohokum hoping to understand what it’s all about, just sit back and enjoy the ride.
  20. Aug 27, 2014
For its vibrant visual design, wonderful music and sheer whimsical weirdness, Hohokum is well worth experiencing. But at times it seems to be meandering back and forth between a video game and a piece of interactive art, unsure of which world it belongs to.
  21. Aug 27, 2014
Hohokum is a visually stunning trip into some weird dimension full of flying creatures, relaxing music and good vibes.
  22. Aug 27, 2014
Hohokum is not a game to show this medium a new direction. Instead it points to where gaming came from, promoting a delightfully childish sense of play.
  23. Aug 26, 2014
An artistic game that will make you forget the outside world. Hohokum is pure magic.
  24. Aug 26, 2014
While the game's audiovisual presentation is not to be missed, Hohokum as a game experience leaves something to be desired. The lack of a purposeful goal is both relaxing and frustrating, as it's difficult to discern any true meaning other than simply existing and floating around. This isn't so much a game as it is interactive art.
  25. In these days, players are surrounded by identical shooter games but Hohokum, offers them an exit way.
  26. Aug 25, 2014
Hohokum is an excellent cross between LocoRoco and Journey, one of the very best indie games on PS4. It really captivates the player thanks to its visual touch, its wonderful soundtrack and the simplicity of its gameplay. Despite of offering only a few hours of game, Hohokum remains a UFO that will satisfy every lover of poetic productions.
  27. Aug 25, 2014
Like any good vacation, you'll return home at the end of it with lasting fond memories. But unlike most vacations, with Hohokum you always have the opportunity to revisit them whenever the mood strikes.
  28. Aug 22, 2014
Hohokum is a title that makes colors and imagination its centerpiece: one of those games that bombards the senses of those who decide to try it, and tries to conquer the mind with its creativity and artistic impact.
  29. Aug 22, 2014
It’s difficult to adequately explain or describe Hohokum. It’ll fill you with a child-like sense of wonderment with its abstract exploration, but as a game, its definitely a case of style over substance.
  30. Aug 22, 2014
Hohokum is one of those games, where you can simply lean back to dive into beautifully designed worlds somewhere between “zen gaming” and a serious puzzler.
  31. Aug 22, 2014
Hohokum can be considered as a video game or interactive art, depending on the way we see the experience of playing. But developing such an experimental approach surely requires genuine creativity, that is expressed with an elegant and misleading simplicity through this singular journey.
  32. Aug 21, 2014
The sheer variety and novelty of what Hohokum offers, as well as the attention paid to making sure that something as basic as the movement feels great (the only game I think does this as well as Hohokum is another Playstation title, Journey), means that Hohokum is going to be something I come back to, on occasion, for a pleasant escape. And it’s one well worth your time.
  33. Aug 21, 2014
The title’s at its best when you meander through its oversaturated scenes without purpose, but that means that it’s not recommended for everyone.
  34. Aug 20, 2014
This is one of these ideas that are not designed for everyone, but if you are open for innovation it can be fascinating.
  35. Aug 20, 2014
Hohokum can feel like a chore at times but for the most part, this is an original, inspired piece of interactive art.
  36. Aug 20, 2014
Novelty and relaxing fun awaits in this unique adventure. A real strange and experimental game.
  37. But once I had the sense that there were specific things to be done in order to achieve goals, that became my focus, and the magic of the experience suffered for it. The sense of wonder I had with each new discovery was tempered by the logical part of my brain, which began looking for problems to solve and working out plans.
  38. Aug 18, 2014
Hohokum‘s intriguing collection of free-form worlds begs exploration, but the game’s questionable structure stifles the ability to play it on your own terms. It’s an aural and visual spectacle, but it’s also a lot more frustrating than it ever needed to be.
  39. Aug 18, 2014
This is a game that sticks with you long after you switch it off.
  40. Aug 17, 2014
Hohokum may look bright and colorful, but it can feel awfully like stumbling around in a darkened room. It's a double-edged sword. Charting the unknown can feel as stressful as it is intoxicating. There's serenity to be found in the shadows, but it's just as easy to become agitated as you reach out into the black, searching for that elusive light switch.
  41. Aug 14, 2014
Hohokum is a different kind of game that prizes aimless interaction and exploration above completing specific objectives. It's a title that brings together a cute, minimal art style and a great soundtrack to create a zen experience. It's worth a play, but not everyone will appreciate its strengths.
  42. Aug 14, 2014
Despite the occasional frustration it brings, Hohokum is an absolute treat to behold.
  43. Aug 14, 2014
Blaming a game this casual and calm for being obtuse is like yelling at the masseuse for doing too good of a job.
  44. Aug 14, 2014
Hohokum gives you everything you need to enter a colorful and freeform world with little restraint toward the kind of art exploration that turns anyone into a finger-paint prodigy. That doesn’t make for the greatest video game, even if its charm lasts far longer than you’d think.
  45. Aug 14, 2014
But Hohokum ultimately pulls its punches. You can do whatever, if you want, but eventually you’ve got a puzzle to solve. Bad puzzles are easy to design; good puzzles (whether easy or hard) require logic, care, even a touch of the narrative Hohokum pointedly rejects. Good puzzles tell a story in their physical parts.
  46. Aug 13, 2014
Hohokum is one of those games that could only have been created by a small team, so distinct are the voices within the presentation and design.
  47. Aug 13, 2014
Short, simple, and wonderfully inventive, Hohokum's bizarre aesthetics and enigmatic level design make for a consistently surprising, enjoyable romp.
  48. Aug 13, 2014
Hohokum is the prime example of a game whose beauty is truly skin deep. It sure is lovely to look at, and if that's all you want, you won't be disappointed. There's just not much under the surface.
  49. Aug 13, 2014
Despite a distinct look and feel, Hohokum doesn't live up to its more ethereal aspirations.
  50. 65
Hohokum’s worth greatly depends on one’s ability to revel in simple, charming discoveries. There’s no lasting impact, meaningful message, or even resolution to its shallow core mechanics, but a playful aesthetic and relaxing music make being in its spaces enjoyable for a time.
  51. Aug 12, 2014
It’s easy to get lost in Hohokum’s enchanting scenes, but it’s just as easy to come crashing back down to Earth when you lose your way.
  52. Aug 12, 2014
Most importantly, you get from Hohokum what you put into it. Players who investigate the nooks and crannies, seeing everything in each world, will be rewarded.
  53. Aug 12, 2014
I can't stress how much I enjoyed the game's art, music, and quirky vibe. Hohokum is one hell of a screensaver. As a game, it lacks depth.
  54. Aug 12, 2014
In the end, Hohokum often seems content with simply being strange rather than evolving into something transcendent.
  55. Aug 12, 2014
Genuine art is meant to evoke a response from its audience, and Hohokum's diverse assortment of imaginative endeavors makes it easy to get lost inside its world. It's effective union of art, activity and music, managing a progression of open personal responses without the weight of a direct narrative or dissonant mechanics.
  56. 84
A game that can successfully and constantly challenge the player with so many vastly varied ideas is pretty impressive. I don’t even want to use the word “puzzle” to describe any part of this game.
  57. Aug 12, 2014
You should definitely try Hohokum if only to understand how weird and hard to describe it is. But not everyone will appreciate its laid-back attitude and guidance allergy. It’s certainly a beautiful and unique title, and I enjoyed playing it, but bring along some extra patience just in case.

It's very interesting and it has a unique flavor that's all its own. The game is almost like interacting with a work of art, swimming around and finding out what to do and what you can interact with. It encourages exploration but without pushing the user toward any specific objectives, which was a refreshingly different pace. I would recommend anyone to pick this up and try it. My first hour felt like 15 minutes just because I got lost in watching the gorgeous visuals, listening to the amazing soundtrack and exploring the Hohokum world! It's definitely a game that feels like flower, sound shapes etc., and it deserves similar praise! Full Review »
