Finishing Entwined is a bittersweet experience. One on hand I was happy to have escaped the extremely repetitive gameplay, while on the other hand I just felt that with a little more variation, Entwined could have been so much more.

"Entwined" is kind of an interesting game to review. On one hand it is a fun and beautiful experience. On the other it's incredibly brief"Entwined" is kind of an interesting game to review. On one hand it is a fun and beautiful experience. On the other it's incredibly brief length and lack of variety make it not worth the purchase for the majority of gamers. It's definitely a game for those looking for a memorable experience rather than a complete gameplay package.

The area where the game soars is in it's presentation. The graphics are gorgeous, particularly on home consoles due to the larger screen, and the soundtrack is soothing. The game tries to establish some sort of emotional connection with the layer with it's story about love taking place over lifetimes even though the lovers are separated, but due to how underplayed it all is it falls short. Still it's attempts at being artsy and deep to a game that is both pleasant to look at and listen to.

The gameplay experience consists of controlling two characters at once with the analog sticks and guiding them through rings. Along the way you'll have to pick up gems in order to fuse the two characters into a dragon. Once that happens you'll fly around an open with somewhat awkward controls collecting more gems. It sounds boring, but it's actually a pretty entertaining experience. However that is mostly due to how beautiful the levels themselves are, rather than the simplistic gameplay itself. With only nine brief levels there isn't much content in the story mode. The real meat of the game comes from the challenge mode. However it too is also quite brief.

In the challenge mode you are given three lives and left to last as long as you can flying through the rings. Get a high enough score and the next level opens up. It's a straightforward experience. It's the mode you want to play is you are looking to get the most out of Entwined, but it's also where you notice how tedious the gameplay can be. In the story mode you are distracted by gorgeous graphics and how brief the overall experience is. In challenge mode when you are actually trying to go for a highscore and the threat of death is actually present (I'm pretty sure you can't die in story mode) you notice how bland it all actually is.

It's safe to say Entwined has a lot of flaws. The biggest one being it's length, or lack thereof. It can be beaten in an hour or two and the challenge mode doesn't do much to extend the game's lifespan. Still there is something here worth experiencing to the right audience. It's more of an artistic experience than a satisfying game, but there are people out there who are looking for that. I definitely don't regret playing it, but had I not have gotten it for free I would have definitely regretted paying for it. Those looking for enough gameplay content to back up their purchase should look elsewhere, but those looking to see just how beautiful and meaningful themes of the medium can be should check this out. However even they might be disappointed with how little they are getting for the price tag. A shame considering the game is only $9.99.

Entwined is a beautiful brief game. The game deservedly in production values draws many comparisons to a Thatgamecopany work like flower orEntwined is a beautiful brief game. The game deservedly in production values draws many comparisons to a Thatgamecopany work like flower or flow, however it never truly reaches those heights. The gameplay is simple and effective: you control two animals, each with opposite analog sticks (think brothers) and it plays like a rhythm game as you must position them to go through the correctly coloured gates within a ring. You must collect coloured gems and build up your bar to complete a stage (lifetimes), doing so combines your characters into a dragon. The game tries to be a symbolic and meaningful experience but dissent quite get there.

The visuals are beautiful. Certain stages outshine the others but all are cheated brilliantly. This is matched with an excellent soundtrack that paces the gameplay exquisitely. Hitting the right gates creates noises which blend into the music wonderfully.

The gameplay is very simple but is explored well. The game is rightfully short and bot padded out. There are no extra gimmicks, only a few hours at most of solid gameplay. Performance wise the vita version runs extremely well and controls perfectly with the twin analog sticks.

The difficulty of the game is perhaps problematic as the story made is very easy. The difficulty is found in the challenge mode where you are given three lives and aim to get as far in levels as possible.

On the whole this is a great short game full of colour, sound and great gameplay. It just might not have the depth or longevity to stand out.

It's relaxing... If you are in stress you can play the history mode. The soft chill-out ambiance created by the music and the minimalist graphics makes it the perfect game to unclog your mind. Just sit, start playing and relax...
It helps you improve your hand/eye coordination because you use both analog sticks, in the other hand the low missing ratio of the markers could make you have a hard time.
It does not exploits all the features in the vita but there are only a few games that do so, so no problem to that.
Both Pro/con: You only have two objectives: 1- Fish and Bird have to become Dragon... 2-The only enemy is your coordination.
Pros: Nice game, cute history, excellent ambiance, suitable controls, nice contrast and graphics, mesmerizing
Cons: Short game if not trying to beat the challenges, extremely repetitive.

Lowering the resolution from 1080 to whatever tiny size the PS Vita displays obviously wasn't enough to make the game run smoothly on the platform and the graphical fidelity was lowered to a point that lost the entire point of the game. It has 2 major flaws, the first being that it's flat out ugly in this state and the second being that the game has no tolerances in place for the Vita thumb sticks. The reduced scale of usable points on the thumb sticks coupled with their smooth convex tops make it impossible to play this game to the level of precision the game asks.

If you really want this game, download it on another platform.
