  • Summary: Gun Commando has players re-living the classic FPS premise - the earth has been invaded by aliens and you're the only person that stands in their way. Shoot, run and dodge bullets in a frantic and fictional game world that's packed full of devastating weapons. Your goal is simple: kill every last one of them! Expand

  1. A tidy PS Mobile title who’s only crime is repetition. Loads of fun. [April 2013, p78]

Gun Commando is a solid Doom clone with a number of fresh ideas. Unfortunately, it is plagued by imprecise controls and too many cheap deaths. Even with that weighing against it, this is still preferable to most first-person shooter games on the PS Vita!

Gun Commando is a neat idea, but it falls apart in the final stages. The nostalgic presentation is a strong lure, but the sloppy controls and relentless difficulty let it down. It may be an accurate representation of the genre that it's attempting to celebrate, but times have changed.

Most reviews I've read about Gun Commando have sadly missed the game's point: to enjoy the retro, Doom-esque shooters in all their simple glory. This game is FUN if you take it for what it is, and allow it to show you a simpler time. If you enjoy/ed retro shooters, you'll enjoy Gun Commando. One of the best features of the game is the gun-leveling mechanic: accuracy in your shots slowly builds an upgrade meter. When that's full, you get a better gun that does more damage and awards you more points (pretty cool!). Be careful though: missed shots lower the upgrade bar, so make those first shots of a new gun count, else you risk a rapid downgrade!

I give it a 7.6 out of 10. It's a fun, good game. If you liked retro shooters, you can't go wrong with this one.

If you have seen a screenshot of this game, you have seen everything in this game. There are few enemy types, small maps that you repetitively play over and over. The levels just increase the number of enemies for what seems at least to be at least 3 levels until moving to another setting. I am sure the tech is amazing underneath but this is really just a tech demo. If you are expecting Doom, it would be only Doom if it was 1/4 of the first level over and over again. Otherwise the gameplay is OK but you can pay 15 for Stranger's Wrath that will keep you busy for hours instead of the hour it will take to be bored with this. Expand
