Simply put thee best RPG ever to be put on this earth. The graphics are revolutionary for its time and the addition system made the turn based combat system that much more interactive. NEEDS a sequel.

This is the best RPG I have ever played. Few come close, but none can top the overall atmosphere and beauty this game has captured. The combat is amazing. Additions and dragoon transformations give the player a challenge while also being incredibly fun, addictive and interactive. The graphics for it being a Playstation 1 game are simply astounding! This is my personal favorite game and a must play for any RPG enthusiast. Expand

Legend of Dragoon goes where many other RPG's have gone before. The story is a bit generic, though it picks up, and the setting is pretty typical JRPG fare. But there are two places this game absolutely nails it: characters and gameplay. The characters are different than FF. The hero is not a snot-nosed emo-type, but a regular teenager caught up the game of deadly politics and world affairs. The side characters all have more personality than most from any modern game.
As far as gameplay goes...wow! Never has an RPG had such an addictive fighting system, seriously, it's ridiculous. Every single fighting move you have you can level up to 5-6 tiers for every character.
This is a fantastic RPG that still holds up in 2012, though the graphics are painful to look at nowadays, you can get used to them. Great buy.

I believe that the game is as original as an rpg can be. Most rpgs have the same basic story, an uneducated man discovers that he has the power to save the world. The game play is what sets them apart. The use of additions in fights adds an element of skill to this game that others lack. And the graphics of the FMV's is incredible.

Sadly overshadowed by Final Fantasy VII (which was a great title in its own right), some of the criticism of this game is unfair. I recall reading one review that stated that it went so far with the use of the word "bastard" (a legitimate claim, since it *did* have a lot of usage in this game), that there was even a "Bastard sword". I facepalmed reading that, but this game had one of the most compelling stories, best graphics, and interactive gameplay for an RPG of its time. I hope that a sequel (or remake, with a bit less Narm) is made at some point. Expand

This game was amazing, ive played FF7 8 9 10 10-2 12 and none of them(aside from 10 and somewhat 7) had a story line that you could be absorbed into as much as legend of dragoons.... granted the color coded characters was annoying, it still worked :p... if you havent played this game i will tell you now you should walk out of your house and get it immediately.... ok its probably easier to just order it online if your as lazy as me but you get my point, epic game, epic story line, good graphics(for psx XD) and a great twist on the usual turn based attack sequence... ffs limit breaks are no where near as fun as additions... although they do have better names :/ Expand

A brilliant game that managed to offer more than most rpgs could ever. The graphics some have called flat and dry, however for a Playstation one game, I'd have to say those cutscenes look about as awesome as any other. Some say the voice acting is terrible, and I'd have to agree a bit there, however that was undertaken by the english dubbing staff and I do not consider them to be on par with the Japanese. Many have complained about the battle system and its similarity to Final fantasy, ironically I see nothing that can be remotely connected to final fantasy 7, or 8. The additions provided a much more interactive battle as opposed to Final fantasy 7 which was mostly mashing on the attack key or flipping through some menus. The dragoon system was also quite interesting and allowed the character in question to embody the element they represented, a few call that simplistic but I say it works. All this put together - many claim that the fighting system requires too much precision and too much involvement...personally I was 15 years old when I played Lod and I mastered it fine...I'm not sure what the critics are doing but eh. Lastly, the story many say had nothing engaging in it...and that the characters were not able to fully carry or develop the story, to that I say...the story was one of the most moving I have ever witnessed, the characters were all developed well and the scenery of both the present and 11,000 years ago are just spectacular. This is not to mention the incredible twists and turns the plot offers to keep the player on the edge of their seat. If ever there was a game that deserved to have a sequel, it is this one. Expand

This game sucks and is childsplay compared to other great games such as final fantasy, grandia, etc. You can't leave the dotted line on the world map and you constanly have to switch cds to get old items. The fighting is a broke version of final fantasy and the graphics are flat and dry. The voice acting is horrible and the armor is corny. This is a sorry exscuse for a game because you can charge up your moves and instantly win. The levels even stop at 60. You only carry 32 items and the game has no storyline. The only thing good about this game is turning it off. Expand

I don't care what anyone else says, this game is terrific. To tell the truth, I'd pick this over any Final Fantasy game anyday. People who try to give this game a bad name are just jealous that it rocks more than FF. or they dirt poor and can't get the game. Severely underated. As you can see it seems the critics all dislike this one a lot more than the fans who played it. Best gameplay in fights of any RPG i've played to date. It was actually interactive instead of simply pressing attack over and over. Gameplay better than any of the Final Fantasy's of its time for sure and the graphics were amazing as well. Voice acting was good, story was good, I cant even think of any complaints here. A must play. Expand

Before I tell you about this game a word of warning for some ps2 owners This Game will always (no matter what) Freeze at the end of disk 2 when you finish the boss battle with the water Dragoon on the SLIM ps2 (Any slim ps2) It however works fine on older (Any 'fat' ps2) And on ps3's (Mine is a 60GB, It should work on 20GB aswell but im not sure about newer models of ps339;s) If you have a slim ps2 my recommendation would be to get a ps1 (there as cheap as chips now) and all should be fine. NOW for the review! LoD is a great game back in 2000 it was branded as the 'ff killer' it was almost that, but in my opinion it could have used a little more work (Better translation would have probably given it a better rep) And the graphics for it's time were pretty good, It was a small step above ff7 but wasn't has good as ff8 (not even close) The ps3 does give LoD a nice graphics boost (smoothies things out nicely) Overall i'd say if you dont have it get it its VERY cheap now my friend got a copy for $7.00, I got it when it first came out for $50, But it is a worthy game for any RPG Gamers collection! Beck in '01, i got this game in hopes of satisfying my thirst for RPGs. It had awesome graphics (For a PS1), a good story, and a dude in red holding a huge sword!! all that said, i must tell you: if you started playing this back in 2000-2001, chances are you HAVEN'T FINISHED THIS GAME!! honestly, as I look at my 360, my PS3, and my Wii, i tend to cry at how far games have come, yet how unsatisfying Next Gen RPGs are. Pretty much the only people who dont like it are pretentious FF7 fanboys who cant accept that dragoon is a superior game in every aspect. the music is great, the graphics are off the charts, the storyline is intricate, the gameplay is innovative and the the art was beautiful. This is a perfect game. read the reviews of gamepro and see what i mean. and would every one STOP comparing this game to ff 7,8. not every RPG that comes out is taking sh*t from chrono cross or finally fantasy. This game has a very cool style of game play that actually requires some skill not like the other RPGs. And the graphics are almost as good as ps2. the game play graphics also, areas are beautiful and casting spells is a site, and there is like 20 types of spells. Plus this game is long very long, about 50 hours of gameplay(and thats for sort of good players) This game offers every thing unique, sometimes the cities, the folks in the and battles are so very unique that you don't want to leave. This game is nothing like ff7. I think it's LITTLE better. Expand

Even though many say this game is a FF7 remake with a new name, it stands to reason that all RPG games are the same but in the field of the genre in and of itself this games stands high in the ranks with breath-taking graphics, a battle system that constantly grows, and a story to shake the ages. Definitely a classic RPG by any standards. Yes, yes the story line seems to follow a very conventional line of typical RPG storylines and yes the main characters are sort of reminiscent of power rangers but this games was truly great for the interactiveness of the battle system. This game was shorter than FFVII and much more linear and restrictive. But its the only game that got the battle system down to precise button connections that didn't over complicate the game (*cough**cough* magna carta). The story although a little predictable still threw in a few twist which revealed itself in the end which made the story kinda engaging despite the fact you lose Lavitz early in the game and Shana is replaced with Miranda (*questionable*). I loved the game back when it was released and still put up with the lack of options as a dragoon and linear exploration. This games really has something there that captures a gamers attention although not the most polished game of its time it was more enjoyable that FF8 drawing magic system. It may sound like a trashed this game quite a bit but realistically it had its flaws but still the one of the best RPGs to come out on the PSX 2nd only to FFVII and a tie with FF8 since the story in FF8 was better but the battle system was more annoying. I tell you the truth, this is one of the best RPGs I've ever played, and it's definitely among my top favorites of video games. For me, this is around the same caliber of nostalgia as Ocarina of Time when I play it; I love the latter very, very much--definitely one of my favorite Zelda games. That should definitely tell you something about how much I love this game, too. The graphics are subpar compared to games today, but truthfully, I could care less about them. For me, it's mostly about the story and the gameplay, and this game phenomenally excels in both. We have Dart, who starts out as a bit of a lone ranger seeking revenge, joining up with more freedom fighters throughout the land of Endiness who deal with things amiss in their respective countries and ultimately banding together to defeat a being that threatens them all at once. The concept of fate (or destiny, rather) is a motif in the story, and it becomes impossible to think that all that happens is by mere coincidence. The music is also very well written, even if it may be MIDI. Couple the music with the aforementioned epic story, and you have yourself a game that no one could ever forget. If you find a copy and absolutely love RPGs with memorable characters, locations, and music, get it and enjoy it. It seems almost impossible to even THINK that one could regret making an investment like that! Expand

I bought the game off ebay because of the hype and beat it and this game's pathetic. I have quite the collection of Jrpgs between Snes, PS1 and PS2 and Legend of Dragoon is easily one of the worst I own. The story is pathetic (if you can call that a story), the characters are boring, the pace is just a corridor like FFXIII without anything else to do beside the main story (no sidequests) and the battle system is nothing more than an archaic turn based system even by Snes standards. It does have a tacky timing based button press to successfully make the attacks but what is the point really? This is just as stupid as these days QTE's... I'm not hating on the game, I'm just being honest and this game's not even worth the 7 bucks I paid for it. Now for some reason the prices for this game are skyrocketing from 5-7 bucks to $35 used and like $90 new. Not worth it. Expand

Quite possibly the most underrated game I have ever played. The first three RPG games I have played were this, FF7, and Chrono Trigger. All of them are superb games, but The Legend of Dragoon stands out with the best story of the three. The most important element of an RPG is the story, and this game gives a large story with characters that you care about. I believe this is one of the most popular PSN purchases on the ps3 and to me this is no coincidence. Expand

There are a lot of great ideas in the Legend of Dragoon, but sometimes the whole thing gets a bit too repetitive. I am a huge RPG fan and I had to try this game out, I like it overall but there are things that could be better. First I will state the positives, the graphics are great for PS1, the game itself is pretty deep and takes some time to complete, and a lot of the battles are intense and the bosses are awesome. The not so goods include a really tedious and annoying interface, the music sounds pretty generic at times, and the battles and transforming gets extremely repetitive after a while. The repetition is where it hurts the most, almost all battles later on will require you to transform into a dragoon taking up time and patience. If you can get over the flaws though, this is a RPG worth looking at that does require technique to master and beat. Expand

This is one of those games that gets mixed reviews from critics but great reviews from users. Where to begin?
First let me say that I'm not an idiot who carelessly gives out 10s. But this game is just so good, it deserves this score. Combat: This is a turn-based game with an innovative combat system. You can have 3 members in your party. When it's your turn, you attack, defend, use items,
or transform into Dragoons (more on this later). The attack system is really the innovative part. You time input of the X button as rotating squares align with the center square on screen. If the timing isn't perfect, your combo stops. You keep up the perfect timing until your combo is finished. With every 20 perfect combo you pull off-called "additions"-your addition gets stronger. The perfect timing sounds hard, but it's really not. It just takes a little practice, and seeing your addition play out on screen is always fun. There are anywhere from 3 to 7 additions for each character, and you switch out additions whenever you feel like it. There's plenty to master here with the number of playable characters. You later gain the ability to transform into a Dragoon, a flying warrior capable of performing magical attacks. In this state your attack and defense power increase, and you can level up your Dragoon Level in addition to regular level. You have a threat indicator above you that shows when you'll engage in battle. It increases in threat level as you move around and the screen fades to battle. Some might find this annoying, but I liked having the chance to get stronger.
Format: You play from a sort of backed-away view. It's third person, but not zoomed in like with Uncharted or Dead Space. You travel from area to area via the world map. Once you know what your objective is, you just go to the right area and go from there.
Environments: You'll encounter everything under the sun: from underwater settings to expansive deserts. And every place is extremely diverse with its own interactions. In a dragon's lair, you'll climb spiderweb-like strings. On a snowy mountain, you'll slide down slopes. In the desert, you'll get sucked into sand-whirlpools. Then there's of course the cities to visit. Each city has its own feel; you can enter shops, houses, castles, hotels-you name it. The developers were really imaginative with everything. Graphics: Outdated by today's standards, but impressive for its time. You can still make out figures, so it's not too bad. Personally, though, I don't play games for their graphics.
Story: Very well written. It starts off as a simple rescue-the-damsel-in-distress but evolves into so much more, and I really can't give away too much plot detail. Just know that there are a couple plot twists and that along the way you'll meet new party members that you'll come to know and love. This is one heck of a 4-disc story.
Quests: There's plenty of things to do to occupy your time. Aside from the main quest, there's a few side quests that include freeing souls, battling an evil wizard, hunting a wolf, and collecting Stardust for items. Then there's even special enemies that drop special items. These are unusual foes you'll encounter on the world map that involve using a different battle strategy.
Gripes: As I've said, the graphics aren't the best, but put yourself in the year 2000 and they're mind-blowing. Another minor thing is that the voice acting is absolutely dreadful. But take heart, there are maybe 3 scenes in the ENTIRE game that use voice acting.
Overall: An incredibly awesome experience. It spans the length of 4 discs, is immensely fun to play, and is more than worth the $6 it costs on PSN. Do yourself a favor and play this game.

This game was clearly made to compete with the gigantic and legendary Final Fantasy series. And personally, I felt it to be better in every way. The music is a beautiful thing to listen to, the fmv's hold up to this day, the story is deep and emotional, the characters have a lot of development (even having one of the saddest moments in video game history), an innovative combat system, and some good character designs as well. This game succeeds in its mission, and has the potential to be a fantastic rival franchise to Final Fantasy. It's a wonder Sony let it fall into obscurity. Expand
