Looks aren't everything, though. Black Rock Shooter gives players a clever blend of action and RPG. It's not really a shooter, and it's not turn-based. Black Rock Shooter: The Game takes elements from a variety of genres and puts them together in a unique and addictive way. The world hasn't seen a game quite like this before.

It may be designed for last-generation hardware, but it makes an excellent case for small-scale design and proves that great experiences can be had without any need for cutting-edge technology or million-dollar budgets.

In the end, Black Rock Shooter: The Game isn’t quite the standout title that will entrance the world’s audience, but it offers a glimpse of what could have been and makes me hopeful for the future of the series in the gaming medium.

Ultimately I would recommend Black Rock Shooter: The Game to anyone who likes JRPGs but is getting tired of the same old formula.

Black Rock Shooter is competent at what it does and, for the most part, entertaining to play. However, it could use a bit more polish and imagination in its design. It doesn't turn the genre on its head, but with my guns blazing through the chaos, I found a more meaningful story than I expected.

There are better RPGs on the system, but for fans and those looking for something a little different, Black Rock Shooter will hit the spot for a while.

This is a unique game that mixes elements from Japanese role playing games and shooters in a refreshing new way. It may not be a game for everyone, but if you like the two genres and aren’t too picky about graphics, this is a fresh breeze on the ocean of never ending RPG and shooter releases.

It isn’t as long as some of the more established RPG titles out there, but in terms of value for money it does hit the spot. We urge you to take a chance on Black Rock Shooter.

If you’ve been jonesing for a JRPG, and enjoy easy to pick up yet deep combat systems, Black Rock Shooter may be your huckleberry.

BRS is not actually broken, but there's nothing about it that will make you glad you put even 10 hours into it.

Avid fans won’t be disappointed with the purchase, but curious onlookers might want to wait for a sale.

There are many other options for PSP out there, so unless you're a fan of the character or you're looking for a brand new game to enjoy on this handheld, there are no too many reasons to highlight this title.

If you are a fan of its Anime aesthetics, or at least willing to tolerate them, the game will suffice as a budget title with an average amount of content to play through.

A no-brainer if you're a fan of the series, but for anyone else it's really neither here nor there. If you like young girls with big guns and have a penchant for middle-of-the-road action-RPGs, this may well be for you.

The anime and magna iterations of Black Rock Shooter are so enjoyable because they’re crazy, over-the-top Japanese awesomeness. Unfortunately, not much about the video game take on the series is all that awesome, or even very good.

Its poor visuals and dreadful animations along with its expensive price tag means Black Rock Shooter: The Game is a title not worth your time and effort.

The game could have really benefited from coming off its wheels and really opening up the exploration to give you more to do.

The best indicator of whether a given gamer will appreciate Black Rock Shooter is its visual style. The game offers moderately entertaining combat and sad girls in snow, but these can be obtained elsewhere at a fraction of the aggravation. At its core, the story is a familiar one that isn't able to justify its retelling with a new twist. There is something to be said for a game that embraces zoning out and rhythmically blowing things up, but it's not always a straight-up compliment. Look, but don't touch.
  19. Basic gameplay, a by-the-numbers story, and graphics from a bygone era leave this PSP port stuck between a rock and a really outdated place. [July 2013, p.100]

Even though this game came out about 2 years ago originally in japan, it still rocks! (get it?) it's an action game with rpg elements, not as complicated as monster hunter but still pretty in depth if you're into that type of thing, the action is the best part, story is good specially if you're into the BRS Anime/Manga or you've watched the OVA, buy this game, we can still make the psp last a couple more years! BRS is pretty disappointing. While the battle system is pretty fun, it quickly gets repetitive thanks to the limited amount of enemy types that require the same tactics to defeat. Furthermore, the rest of the game is pretty bland. Character models are nice, but the environments and enemies are mostly boring and repeated far too much. The story is ok, but it isn't amazing. Just don't ask me how addicted I am to Black Rock Shooter The Game! Crisp visuals, good story and good graphics. Rpg fans will crave this title. The story is about Shooters in the next dimension who stop Fighters. The movie and comics link together for a good time on PSP. Go buy it right now. Full Review »
