This is an arcade-style game through and through, and a short one. Expect a few thrills once you acclimate to the controls, but don't expect to stick around for very long.
  2. The overall lack of complexity and repetitive nature of the gameplay will seriously reduce the time you'll spend playing this game. It shouldn't take you longer than a weekend to win this war.

More than anything, the PSP version of IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey is a surprise. [Holiday 2009, p.85]

I blew threw it in no time and by the final mission, I couldn't wait for it to be done. It is tedious, very uninspiring, has no depth nor challenge, and only has passable graphics. I will say that IL-2 for the PSP does have 1 thing going for it that I am very grateful for (other than it being a short game - though I will never regain those 4 hours or so spent "playing"): it prompted me to start replaying Ace Combat X again. I forgot how beautifully detailed the graphics are in that game; how enjoyable the game play is; and how much depth and re-playability that game has. I only wish that that people at 505 Games had actually played Ace Combat X before they sat down to develop IL-2 so that they could have been inspired by how good a flight sim/arcade style game can be on the PSP and maybe, just maybe, gleemed some ideas from it. Stay away from this one folks and spend your money on ANYTHING but this piece of utter crap. It's a bust. Grade: F (F is for Forget about this one). Full Review »

In this game instead of being able to freely move around the game decides you can only roll a certain amount and then you can't roll any more - for no apparent reason. It's like driving a racing game and only being able to turn left.. ridiculous! I simply cannot get past this idiotic design choice.. and what's worse - I can't get a refund! Full Review »

Don't get me wrong, IL-2 for the PC is one of my favorite flight sims to thisday. I still hook up my flight stick and battle once and a while. Ace Combat X, IMHO, blows IL-2 for the PSP away. Talk about 'arcade-like'? IL-2 for the PSP is like a mid-80's WW2 arcade shooter. Come on guys...couldn't you have been a bit more creative and given this game some real teeth? The game doesn't have nearly the amount of depth I would have hoped and it quickly becomes repetitive and boring. Did I mention how much the graphics disappoint? LAME! Whatever screenshot and video being shown on the web currently are clearly from the PS3 or XBOX versions of the game. I can easily see this title collecting dust in my collection in no time or better yet, I might just unload it on ebay now that I've finished it. Full Review »
