And all that loading is double-whammy. Not only does it increase the length of each game, it puts a heavy drain on the battery. You probably won't make it all the way over the hills and through the woods to grandmother's house playing Madden PSP on one charge, much less if you turn on the Wi-Fi adapter.

In short, the people that should love the franchise mode may be put off by the performance. In addition to the sluggish menus, load times are too frequent and too long. Portable games should be fast and accessible, and Madden isn't.

It should be noted that the team got a lot of things right, particularly in the graphics and gameplay departments. While the first PSP game in the series has a few issues, it's still the only game in town.

The core gameplay is definitely up to Madden standards, and for many gamers, that's all that's needed. [Nov 2005, p.122]
  5. With features missing such as instant replay and challenging plays, and bugs that will crash games and others that ruin player progression, the game could have used some more time in the shop... Even with all of its problems, Madden 06 is easily the best football game to ever grace a handheld.
  6. This is one for the fans, since the complicated gameplay and ultra detailed stats make it intimidating for nonenthusiasts. It's a quality game, but it may test your easy-going nature. [PSW]

This is the greatest handheld American football game available and fans of the game are likely to be very impressed with the game.
  8. Pass defense is more realistic, and the balance smooths out at higher difficulty settings, but pounding the run is still unrealistically easy.
  9. Far from the definitive Madden on the go experience. There are just too many issues with loading, missing features, and visuals, with the former affecting pacing and overall game play experience.
  10. It nails most of the important things, like the gameplay and the online content, but the game’s beefy, versatile Franchise mode is a technical wreck. Still, its sheer depth makes it a relatively safe choice for patient fans of video gridiron.

Too easy and without replays, the first Madden outing on PSP is a giant fumble. Hopefully next year's update will be better. [Christmas 2005, p.116]

The only time I put Madden down was to play GTA, but now that I finised GTA, back to Madden. As I started the season...I failed to remembered why I never got around to finishing a season. NOW I REMEMBER!!! For the third time in two days and no apparent reason the game made my PSP reboot and on down to wire game, AGGHHH. I am giving away the game....ok, I cant, but I will never play franchise mode again.

I couldnt get through the playoffs either without game shutting down. Other than that it's a typical madden game, 3 or 4 plays is all you really need. Read the defense and then audible. Full Review »
