  1. The whole game seems like an exercise in monotony; a battle-tech demo with refreshing character design. [Sept 2006, p.62]
  2. A dramatic improvement over its predecessor, although the gameplay is more repetitive than we would like to see.
  3. The game ultimately runs out of steam before it's over, but along the way, Rengoku II creates a more streamlined and interesting experience than its predecessor.
  4. It’s another short game in a terrible series that should have been axed at the first try but for some reason it’s back and will be terrorizing the USA later this year. My advice is to look the other way and never touch Rengoku 2 the Stairway to Hell. [JPN Import]
  5. Only marginally better then its predecessor and still suffers from many of the exact same flaws that made the first game so dismal.
  6. Perhaps with better level design, Rengoku II could have been a contender, but as it stands right now the game fails to deliver the goods.
  7. So this makes it officcial: The Rengoku series is stillborn. [Oct. 2006, p.92]

It can get repetitive, but I've played it on and off for 5 playthroughs (omg!) and it's still fun to find new ultra-rare loot and test it out on hordes of enemies.

Besides, the art style and the music is pretty awesome.

So some of the common critics such as a weak story line or repetitiveness are a little rash. This is a great game to pick up, play through a few stages, and turned off. And beyond that, the item leveling-up and character customization puts a unique twist on the game. Expand

Rengoku 2 is a great example: this game is an excellent handheld, with a slick look, nice UI and easy controls. The storyline is minimal, but the combat and customization of your mech are detailed....but not so much as to overwhelm you. Another reviewer mentioned that this game's reviews seem to forget that the PSP is a portable system, not a console where you sit at home and play for hours and hour. That's more true than ever here, with a game that I find myself interested in playing for that one or two hours a day while commuting, and which I can leave off and come back to pretty easily. Avoid the first one, though. The sequel is much better. Expand

It's a large improvement over the first one in every possible way, and although it doesn't offer a good story, it does deliver a lot of creative loot that's genuinely fun to use, and a lot of action. The art direction is above average, and the game is made to be played more than once, as it unlocks new content. I got this for $7, and I'm glad I didn't miss the chance to enjoy this game. Expand

Rengoku 2 is a good game, don't get me wrong, but it can get redundant. The main focus of this game, and the reason i like it is because Rengoku 2 is a good game, don't get me wrong, but it can get redundant. The main focus of this game, and the reason i like it is because there are so many different varieties of equipment and that they get stronger as you use them, which builds a desire to keep playing. The storyline wasn't fantastic, but you also have to give the game points for 4 player game sharing. My friends and I play it together all the time and we all think it's great- but not fantastic.
