Fairly humorless, and mostly done with button not stylus, but a good play. [Aug 2007, p.70]
Steel Horizon offers some strategic subtleties, but the slowness of gameplay means it takes a very dedicated commander to unlock its twists and turns.
Steel Horizon sinks like the Titanic, but I can guarantee you that no one will glorify this disaster.
The missions feel boring and repetitive after a while, and the combat is a mess. While the story is solid, and the overall presentation of the game is pretty good, the floundering gameplay manages to sink the entire fleet.
Every mission just ends up being like the previous one in terms of strategy. Unless you're the type of person who likes collecting all sorts of WWII naval memorabilia, I can't see anyone enjoying this game after the first couple of battles.
There's no sense of joy or satisfaction when you finish a mission—only relief. However, beating one mission will only present you with one that's even longer and more complicated that the previous one. So why even bother with starting the first mission at all?
Without strong strategic elements, an enemy AI with back-bone, a solid presentation, or any idea of pacing (or fun for that matter), Steel Horizon merely sputters around in a sea of its own monotony. Go play Advance Wars instead and leave this on the shelf.
